  1. On the PCM, press the MAIN and TRIP buttons tegether and post back what version the software level is at (top left of the display).

Hello, first, thanks for the reply. I checked the software version and here's what I found:

I noticed that the 'Target' info is missing for the Navigation System. Does that mean something? Thanks in advance. I made an appt with my local Porsche dealer this week so hopefully I will get this thing resolved.

Posted my values next to yours. Hope it helps. FWIW I used to like my Porsche NAV system after this weekend in N. Ga I will be using my Portable Garmin in the Future. It is much better.

I did not have a Target value for the Nav system also.

  2. Model year: 2006

    Body Style: C2S Cabriolet

    Transmission: 6 speed

    Country: U.S.

I purchased my 997 used from Santa Barbara Porsche a couple weeks ago with 3,800 miles on it. When I went to pick it up, the Navigation DVD was missing, so their parts department ordered one and shipped it to me.

The Navigation DVD I received from Porsche (OEM manuf. part #000 044 900 89, 995 044 900 08, T1000-9894, Version 08.2005, PCM DVD-Navigation North America). After I inserted the DVD into into the Navigation system (yes, checked to make sure I instered it the label side up), and attempted to use the Navigation system, I immediately got an error message that read ""incompatable Navigation DVD".

My research tells me that there are other versions of the Nav DVD available...

    1) OEM manuf. part #997 642 257 02, 7L5.919.859.AC, Version 04.2005, North America

    2) OEM manuf. part #997.642.257.03, 7L5.919.859.AL, Version 05.2006, North America

How do I find out if I have the correct version of the Nav DVD for my 997? Is the problem the wrong version of the Navigation DVD itself or is it that I have to have my PCM updated with some new firmware? I've read through many of the articles in this forum, but I'm still at a loss for what to do.

If the problem is that I have a newer version of the Nav DVD than what my system expects, I don't understand why my Porsche dealer's part's department would have ordered the wrong item in the first place.

    Thanks in advance!

    Mu 2006 has the following;

    04.2005

    997.642.257.02

    7L3.919.859.AC

It came out of another car on the floor as my car didn't have one either. I bought my car used with 5,000 miles on it from the dealer in 06.

It Happens. The Porsche parts book is not the best. IMO

I will check my number for you.

  4. My first post here. I am trying to decide on a 997. Have a few questions for you guys.

    1. I really enjoy great steering feel. (Don't we all. B) ) I drove a 997 C4s, the steering while very communicative, was somewhat light in effort. Have not driven the S yet. Does the steering effort vary from S to 4S or are they about the same?

Haven't driven a 4S I have the 2S. At least 100 lbs lighter in the front end.

    2. Still undecided on S vs 4S. I know the 4S is a little heavier but it doesn't seem to affect the performance too much. I like the wider body, although there is not much difference on the 997. Not planning on driving in the snow but I do like the extra traction of AWD, especially when driving more aggressively than usual. The C4S felt very planted through the turns, does the S have the same degree of stability and the ability to get on the gas early past the apex? Wait, isn't that what Porsche's do best anyway? Will I feel much difference between the two?

Sounds like the 4S is for you. I frankly would like to try one.

    3. I really like the black color the best so far. Would I be better off with the "basalt black" or regular black? Do they both have a clear coat and is one softer or more prone to scratching than the other? I've had a black MB and the black paint was a nightmare to keep scratch free. Is the Porsche paint any better or "harder" than the typical paint these days?

Black is a PITA in my book. It gets dirty right after you wash it. I like black but would only buy a basalt black. I have Artic Silver and I get more miles per wash than I would in a Black car.

    4. Finally, I can buy the Turbo just as easily but.... I keep thinking the S/4S is just more of a "soul" car that has character and is fun to drive while the Turbo is just wicked fast but not as involving. Even the exhaust note of the S/4S is more involving/fun to me than the suction/induction predominant noise of the Turbo. Or am I kidding myself? I also wouldn't want to invest in a Turbo only to have to trade it in when the DSG comes out because I think I would prefer DSG to a stick or Tiptronic. Isn't DSG just around the corner or is it still ways off?

Rumors of the DSG for 2009 with DFI. That is when I will buy my next one with DSG or maybe 2010, give them a year to work out the bugs. But my plan would be to keep my 6SP C2S for along time and probably have both cars. It is hard to replace the feeling of involvement in a car with a 6sp. With DSG it can be like a video game.

I have an A3 with DSG, like it allot in the sport mode, for a daily driver. I think a NA C2S with DSG would be really quick due to the speed of the shift from 1-2.

Turbo vs NA I have right seated in a Turbo on the racetrack with a race driver but not in the driver seat(awesome). My C2S with a few mods is more car than I need for the street NA. Don't think I need the turbo either.

    Thanks guys!

    Good luck.

  5. Hi,

Thanks, how does the 305 work will it fit the porsche 19 rims ???

Also I think the tread wear rating for the RE050A (140) and the Michelin (220) are both lower than the continental (280), the potentza is (400) but the speed rating is lower W versus Y. I don't think the Michelan will wear as well as the Conti on that basis. also I get inner wear due to camber and highway miles.

Think I'll stick with the conti's..

Do you have a view on balancing. If I go to orbit racing @ wpb I can get a road balance, whereas tire kingdom does a mag balance.

I have PS2's on my C2S and think they are great especially compared to the Pirrelli's(305 PS2's on the rear stock rims). I have Contis on the S4 and I don't like them at all. It is a lease car which will be turned in. If I was going to keep it I would put PS2's on it. The conti's are noisier and don't track well especially on grooved roads.

960's on my A3 good compromise tire. Quiet, decent ride and handling plus they are supposed to be good for 45K. I would consider them on my 911 if I drove it everyday for the improved mileage.

  6. Just picked up a 06 C2S and considering performance upgrades. Talk with my dealer a they recommend doing this in steps.

    1. Airbox (they recommend Evo sport)

    2. Headers (they recommend Porsche brand and EVO sport)

    3. Mufflers (they recommend Porsche brand and EVO) however they also think that just doing the first two is enough.

Anyone tried just this? Is it worth it? thanks

    My thoughts,

    1. RSS Plenum

    2. Headers. X-51, E-bay, AWE, etc I think anything is better than Stock.

    3. X-51 Air Box etc

    4. High Flow Cats

    5. Software GIAC, REVO, FVD, APR etc

    6. Muffler - My preference Remus if you want more noise Fabspeed, TUBI, AWE, PSE, etc

I have done 1 and 2 as funds come in the rest will be done. At this point I am Very Happy with the increased power on the Butt Dyno and the significant improvement in throttle response.

Actually before I do any further mods I will most likely go to the Porsche Driving school to learn how to drive better.

  7. Hi once again everyone.......and.... :welcome: I am RE-opening the topic to anyone that could educate US on the "PLENUM". We all may have different opinions about what we think of the PLENUM but the goal should be to assess and figure out if it is a Modification worth our effort and money, while safe enough to to keep the reliability and integrity of our Porsches. It has been a hot topic lately and few people have posted their opinion on 6speedonline. As RennTech subscribers who like to come to this forum to learn, share and interact between us, lets build on this topic so that we could get to the bottom of it, and reach a balanced verdict of what the PLENUM can or can not achieve in our "bottom line" search for additional horses. What could we, us, owners of 997 and 997S realistically expect from the RSS PLENUM once we put the $995 for the relatively small iron cast piece. The company Roadsportsupply.com which I talked to, claims 24HP/22TQ on the 997 and 27HP/25TQ on the 997 S. If indeed anyone has seen and felt that kind of difference before and after the PLENUM was installed beyond the benefit of the doubt I certainly will put one. Others put the increase more in the 10-11HP. During my telephone conversation with Roadsportsupply they even claimed that their figures were conservative!!! Lets make Renntech, the premier forum for the PLENUM debate. If we conclude it is worth it, it could be Bang for Dollar, one of the best and easiest mod add on yet.

I am including the link that states the HP/TQ increase of the different PLENUMS:

Thanks in advance for sharing any mentoring, and advice. :lightbulb:

    Cheers :renntech:

  8. Hey Truculent!! I opened this forum topic to have constructive and intelligent comments without the need to be over reactive. You mentioned about no need to be condescending, but yet you made the unecessary comments, and I quote "Those Stupid Germans...." Please be conscientious that some of the readers may be offended, by such lack of etiquette. I am not from Germany, but being from Europe, I did found you verbadum a little out of context, and baseless, specially when indeed the Germans are behind the best engineered vehicles in the world, one of them being PORSCHE. You are welcome to share your input and opinions, but please stay in line with everyones wish to keep Renntech a fun and respectful forum for those who want to share and learn more about their passion for the Porsche German Car.

Plenum or no Plenum...who cares, we're just here to be constructive and interact while possibly having different opinions on what is worth and what's not.

    Sincerely

    Porschester

Do you know what sarcasm is? Read the whole post. The “those stupid Germans” comment was a sarcastic comment meaning that if the builders of the best engineered cars in the world need to go through all they do with the X51 kit to gain 26 hp how does a shop in California get an additional 27 hp from a 6” piece of pipe? I am of German ancestry with a German surname, worked for German car companies for 35 years (VW, Porsche and BMW) so back off. The comment was in no way meant as condescending to Germans.

Thanks for the dyno graphs on the Caymen S but last I saw this was the 997 forum and my references have been exclusively to what the RSS plenum does for the 997S. I still want to see a dyno showing a 27 hp gain.

If I meant it snide or sarcastically I would have left the smiles off. I meant it very tongue and cheek, in the same vane as your stupid German comment. I just don't get it.

  9. Those stupid Germans! They need to increase the size of the air box and add a second air intake, increase the diameter of the intake manifold and throttle bodies, modify the heads, increase the spring tension on the exhaust values to allow for a 300 rpm higher red line and subsequently increase the rpm of where the engine will produce peak power, install freer flowing exhaust headers and modify the ECU to be compatible with these differing parameters and only to get 26 more hp.

With the magic plenum you add a 6” piece of plumbing midway through the intake system and gain 30 more hp!

I followed the Plenum group buy on 6speedonline and never once saw a before (bone stock) and after (just the plenum) dyno run, ¼ mile ET or timed lap times, just a bunch of “butt dynos”.

I think there are a lot of very gullible individuals out there.

    /quote]

In a recent issue of European Car they got 10-11Hp on a dyno and approx 15-18 Ft lb of torque going from Memory. Try one your Butt might like it if you get it off your head. :D :D

  10. ...well heard back from my local Porsche Center in Cardiff, UK and the comlpete X51 'Air Cleaner' costs £638 GBP and that doesn't include 'Air Box' (inlet pipe) or extra gasket for lid and X51 oil filler pipe. Cutting the lid seems no biggy with provided template but that oil filler pipe looks a right bugga to remove and change and I know someone on here mentioned about removing the alternator but that looks pretty complex for a D.I.Y.'er?

They did mention some discout on the parts but not sure what type of gains are to be had just for fitting this alone without the engine mods. Had PSE installed after I took the car so enjouying the benefits of that already.

    Watch this space I guess...

    D

well i finished my install , of the x51 intake and the headers. the alternator removal was a pain, it just would not come out, but once again the forum helped me out, the bushing on the alternator gets rusted, so it wont budge, but few bang with the hammer on the bolt it loosened up the bushing an the alternator came righ out. oil filler pipe swap was a breeze. just be patient. impresse witht the results, car now has a better throttle respones, and slightly quicker.

next is the 20 mm euro sports supsension. I have assembled all the suspension outside the car, just have to swap it now.

How difficult is it to accurately cut the hole in the hood?

  11. Recently I changed my headers on the C2S. One of the Header Pipes at the manifold was pure Black the others 5 were mostly gray with a little black.

The dealer without looking at the headers but talking to a mechanic says this is not a problem if it is running OK.

Should I pursue this further by asking to talk to a Porsche rep? It is obvious to me one cylinder is running very rich or I have an oil problem(ring or valve stem seal)

  12. I am in the process of ordering a Targa 4S and was wondering if I should spend the money and get the X51 package or go aftermarket? If aftermarket, what is the best upgrade for ecu, exhaust, headers etc.? Thanks for your help.

If money is not an issue go with the X-51. It is not easily replicated in the aftermarket. The intake starting at the a/f to the engine is different. The heads are different too, but I am not sure exactly how. I believe I read they are ported and polished.

Get the X-51 then change the cats and Muffler and you could probably add another 10-15HP. If I was ordering and money was not the issue it is the way I would go.

Check out the parts catalog to determine the differences for yourself.

    http://www.boardwalkag.com/catalog/catalogue_content_en.htm

  13. I purchased and installed the AWE system primarily to gain the advertised HP and T increases. I was impressed by the quality of the products and how well matched all the components were. The system is working great and I get many complements on and off the track on how the car sounds. I also didn't notice any significant increase in sound volume over the stock system in normal use.

    Good luck with your decision.

    Dan

This is a never ending question at this point for me. Everything I have read leads in different directions. I was heading AWE's way. Now I am not sure. Talked to the folks at APR this weekend at Barbers during a DE. Bought their software for my A3 and really like it.

They claim their headers, cats, muffler, BMC a/f and software are good for 43HP. Billy Boat mfgs their headers and mufflers. The cats come from Germany - 200 CEL. They claim they are quieter than an AWE but louder then Miltek.

Remus is another option to consider as are the guys who make the RSS plenums they are going to be impoting a system from Germany last I heard. I have the plenum and am vbery happy with the improvement.

I am seriousily considering X-51 headers, someones cats and the stock muffler to see how it works. I think the main bang for the buck comes from the cats and the headers in that order and I don't really want a loud system.

    Good luck.

  14. The airbox is around $700, the deck seal $10, the inlet hose around $50. I'm also going to add the air mass sensor wire extention as soon as it arrives from Germany. The stock airmass sensor is a direct fit but the stock wiring harness could be a little longer. The only item I have not addressed yet is the oil filler tube. I purchased the X-51 oil filler tube because it's shorter than the stock tube which does not fit up perfectly to the new airbox. The only problem is I can't figure out how to unbolt the stock oil filler tube without dropping the engine. If your hands are smaller maybe it could be accomplished but I can barely fit my hands deep enough to feel the oil filler bolts let alone actually get a socket on them. I'll take some pictures when I get a chance.

I look forward to the pictures. Part numbers would be great too!

Is the Air cleaner the same ?
