  1. I am trying to increase the power of my S while retaining warranty drivability and my PSE. Does anyone have any sugestions? I would like to accomplish at least 385hp but more is always better. Is there a way to do this without hemoraging cash? Also can you effectively use cold air intake, plenium, headers and sport cats with the PSE or does it negate the gains. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

Try x-51 headers, AWE Cats, X-51 Air box and some software.

I have AWE Headers and Cats, Remus Mufflers, X-51 airbox, APR software, IPD Plenum, and a slightly modified Throttle body. I have never put the car on a dyno but I really enjoy the difference. My guess 25-40HP.

  2. Does it have the X 51 carbon airbox?

It is really pretty easy to change the air filters. Easier than a stock 997S. No vacum lines on the x-51 box.

Check to the left of the air box. I beleive there are some plastic clips which hold a hose. These clips spring open as in they pull apart easily.

Lossen the clamp on the bellows pipe between the Air box and engine closest to the air box. Slide the clamp forward.

Remove the connector to the MAF right by the clamp.

Push the bellows off the air box and lift the air box out.

Turn it over remove the screws on both sides and change the filters.

Sometimes the rubber grommets that the box sits in come out when you pull it out so note where they go.

This is going from memory so check to make sure I didn't forget something. It is really easy.

Put a towel on the paint so you don't scratch it by accident.

  3. I have read many posts and from my friend's opinions so i am thinking only these options.

    what are you suggesting?

I have the APR and like it. It seems to bring the torque on sooner, lower in the rpms.

In addition I have AWE headers and Cats, X-51, Plenum, and the x-51 airbox. For me it improved the everyday drive ability.

I think either the APR or Softronic are good options. Depends on which is easier for you to acquire and install. The softronic is DIY with a laptop.

  4. I tried a search but unsuccessful with my key words.

I would like to have my '05 sound a horn beep when remotely locking the car. I had this ability with my 996 after installing an after market radio and it is outstanding as to letting you know if you actually locked the car.

I know that leaving the glove box open trips the alarm but this is rather awkward. Is there a fuse or something that can be removed or some other method to allow the horn to sound when locking the car?

    TIA for your responses.

I had to add an aftermarket smart top module to get this feature.

  5. Dave,

If you read the link that Loren gave you I think all of your questions will be answered. It talks about intake manifolds, Plenums and a custom machining option to make the X 51 TB fit.

Oh sorry I see you were in that thread already.. My apologies

Yea Wanyne mentioned machining, but machining what. A new bolt pattern, larger throttle area (this is a given). RSS wants $300 to machine a plenum. That's kind of outlandish. Maybe I can do it myself.

    Dave

    Dave,

I think they would have to machine one of their plenum's. Not only for the four ne mounting holes but the opening is 4-6MM bigger too.

The stock Plastic Plenum would not work.

    Let me know the results.

    ddodd100@charter.net

    David

    Thanks Dave,

I knew the OEM plastic plenum wouldn't work, but just how much work would it be to machine the RSS piece. I may drive down to RSS as Greg says he has a 997 X51 throttle body there so I can see.

  6. Hi all,

I replaced the battery on my 2006 911 Cab.

Unscrewed the bolt that holds the battery down, and replaced the battery.

When it came to screwing the bolt back in, I expected the lower piece to be threaded, but it isn't.

So - must have been a nut underneath, of which there is now no sign :(

My question: can somebody describe what it looked like originally?

    Alan

haha, sorry not laughing at you, but the same thing happened to me! you have the wrong size battery! the one you got is slightly wider than your old one, so you need to get a replacement of the correct size and your issue will be no more :)

remove the battery and you'll see a second hole appx an inch to the inside of the non-threaded hole

    Sam

There are two or three holes for the battery to bolt to. I used a Johnson controls battery which is sold by Auto zone and Wal-mart(Wal-mart is cheaper- same battery) There is a 48L which will fit in one of the holes with a weld nut and there is the 49L which will fit in the hole with out a nut. The 48L is the same size as a stock battery but their application chart says this is for a 996 and maybe a Non S 997. They sell you the 49L which is slightly longer or wider depend on how you look at it.

Long story short I put a 49L in my 06 C2S then used an aircraft style nut with the stock bolt and carfully lined it up with the hole and started the bolt. Works fine. I bought the nut at Autozone.

  7. Hi;

I have considered all options for performance. (I don't like turbo, and superchargers/ chips void your warranty.)

I really prefer both the sound and response of naturally aspirated engines.

I have a 2008 997S and have been very successful with HP/ performance gains by adding the following: 1)Fabspeed headers/ mufflers, 2)X-51 Carbon Fiber Airbox with new X-51 throttle body, 3)BMC air filters.

You can do all of this for about $5K if you do the install yourself.

I have not dyno'ed the changes but can guarantee you will be satisfied with the "seat of the pants" test. I have road tested by comparing to the new 997-2 (385HP) and smoked the new 997 in both 1/4 mile and track time.

0-60 times are 3.9 sec., 1/4 mile 12.2@116mph. (This is pretty darn close to GT3 specs.)

This would be my recommendation for HP/ Performance enhancements.

    Wayne

Thanks for your input Wanye. I would love to see your dyno's. Also, did you do a "before" dyno when your car was stock?

    Thanks,

    Johnny

    FWIW,

    I agree with Wayne W.

I have added AWE HEADERSand CAts, REMUS Exhaust(AWE was too loud), X-51 Air box, RSS Plenum and Modified TB(not x-51), and APR software. Mine is a 6 speed but I have driven a 997.2 PDK in Sport mode and thought the engine was fantastic. Mine with the sport button on is every bit as good or better. I absolutely love the performance. The only thing I will do in the future is add lighter wheels and maybe a flywheel.

    I prefer a N/A engine over a S/C and wouldn't consider that option.

Haven't tracked it but I had no problems staying with a Lambo and a Corvette on back roads while a 930 Turbo couldn't keep up.

OOPS!! checked the other thread you knew all that. I should have known better I have seen many of your posts before. I think we have even exchanged e-mails.

  10. I beleive shell helix is also 5W40. The diesel oils contain higher levels of surfactancts (cleanaing agents). Probaly not a bad idea to join the contributing members and look over the TSB section for porsche approved oils. There are about twenty approved suppliers each with a number of options.

Thanks I am a contributing member and have the list. Though I probably need to make another contribution.

The Castrol Edge is a new product and available in Auto parts store and Wal-mart but not in either of the grades required by Porsche 0-40 or 5-40. However it is in other parts of the world.

Autozone does sell the Mobil1 5W-40 Diesil though as well as M1 0-40. Walmarts in my area no longer carry 0-40.

Here is a site that says Mobil1 0-40 yielded the highest HP. Disclaimer I know nothing about the site just did a search and found it.

  12. Thanks guys. I could not understand

how a stock caymen S could be a fast as

my 997 S down the straights. I was

told that the car was getting a better launch

out of 14 because it had racing tires and

not street tires like my car. I took 14 faster and yet I could not

pull past this caymen S on the track. Now I

have passed alot of Caymen S's on the track but

this one car had something special about it. Thanks

    for opening up my eyes.

    Paul

    +1 on the APR.

Some people have put 3.8 x-51 motors in Caymens.

  13. Hi guys,

    I have over 56,000 on a 2006 997 S. I just

bought a new battery but the starting is getting weaker. I

have not looked on the 996 site but what goes first.

    the starter or the alternator?

Does anyone have any good recomendations for spraying

some fluid on the alternator brushes?

    Paul

I have read of some issues with the wiring harness on the engine needing to be changed to solve this problem especially if the problem is slow starting when the engine is hot.

  14. Hi new to the forum and new to Porsche. Have always loved the looks but not very familure to the models. I have had several Vettes but now have converted to Porsche. I am looking to buy an 06 or 07 911 in the next few months. Can some one tell me what the difference is between c2 c4 and c4s is? Also what is the Hp of these cars. Also looking for a tip tronic as I have a bum shoulder cant shift. Thanks for any and all info. I look forward to learing about these amazing cars. Also let me know of any issues I should be looking for before I make a purchase. as always look forward to hanging out here Thanks in advance.

    I thought the C2 and C4 were 325HP? Doesn't the 09 go to 345 though?

  15. So I have had my '06 997 S for about 4 months now and have done mostly short drives here and there not spending too much time doing highway driving. I always noticed that there was some road noise when transitioning from asphalt to concrete (grooved) stretches of highway and when going over speed bumps and uneven road, but did not pay too much attention to it. I recently did an hour of highway driving and could barely stand the cabin road noise. It seemed to be much worse on the concrete stretches and over expansion joints. I also noticed that more of the noise came from the rear tires rather than the front. I have also noticed more noise coming from the rear when going over speed bumps or rough road. I have brand new PS2's, but did notice the noise with the Pirelli's I had previously. Is this normal? I was told it could be bad wheel bearing, but the car has 14,5k miles so I question this being the cause. Any insight would be appreciated.

In addition to road noise caused by the surface or tires I experienced a resonance at highway speeds in 6th gear that I found more irritating than the normal road noise. I found changing the headers made this noise go away. First the e-bay headers than the AWE headers. Both did the job.

  16. I'm a new member, so bare with me; this is my first post. That said, I have owned Porsches since 1996, and have a 997.2 4S on order for October production. Does anyone know if there will be a stainless steel exhaust option, like that available on the 997.1? I know you can order (eventually....) the sport exhaust -- but I can't find the st.steel option on the current options list and my dealer doesn't know either.

I think just about all manufacturers including Porsche make their exhausts out of Stainless Steel standard these days

  17. interested to know if anyone's had an engine remap on a 997 with an x51 power kit. if so what company and what sort of improvement in power do you gain in real terms, is there a big difference, or is it quite a modest gain? would appreciate some honest feedback from from fellow x51 drivers, not just facts & figures quoted by the remapping company's. 06 997 c4s x51 sports suspension lsd

I don't have an X-51. But from what I have read the only companies I know of that could do this are Softronic and probably FVD.

  18. I have an '06 997S that I've owned since new. I'm trading the car next week and ordering a new 997S with PDK. I'm considering the PCCB option. Can anyone offer their experience with these brakes?

    Thanks!

I have them and love them. Probably won't get another with out them.

Very little to no brake dust and the brakes are fantastic.

    There are several threads on this issue on the other boards, my take away;

Those that don't have them have many reasons not to.

99% of those who have them like them. I have heard of very issues.

  19. These cars are loud especially on cement.

That being said I found The P-zero to very loud as they wore out. The Ps2s seem to be going the same way, although when new, they were quiet.

Another issue may be alignment. My wifes S4 became out of alignment in the front, just about wearing out the inside of the tires.

Had it aligned and it became much quieter with the same tires.

I am seriously thinking of adding some Dynamat to the back if mine. Has anyone else done this?

  20. Hi guys. I live in the Pacific Northwest and use the 997S to get to and from work (~ 50% highway, 50% city driving), and for some moderately-spirited weekend fun when dry (no tracking). I don't plan on driving it in the snow, which does not happen much where I live. Instead, we get a lot of rain. So I'm trying to decide whether to get a non-approved all-season tire (RE960AS) or an approved summer tire (PS2) and just drive much more carefully in the rain. I currently have PS2s that I will have to replace soon, but just got the car and haven't had a chance to test them through our "wet season" (which is pretty much all-year long except for a brief period in the summer).

The trouble I'm having is that I've searched the threads here and elsewhere (and read websites like tirerack.com, etc.), but I can't seem to find a direct comparison of "Ultra High Performance All-Season" vs. a "Max Performance Summer" tires. I'm trying to understand, for example, how a 9.0 "wet performance" rating in one category would compare to another. I'm assuming the ratings differ across categories of tires on a relative basis? I'd love to see cross-category comparisons so I can see how much I'm sacrificing in each category.

Bottom line is that I'd sacrifice some dry-weather performance for improved wet-weather performance. Will the RE960AS be significantly better than the PS2s in wet weather/resistance to hydroplaning? If so, will they then be significantly worse than the PS2s in dry weather handling? I'm not pushing the car to it's limits by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't want to end up with a car that doesn't handle like a "Porsche", because of the all-season tires, for the occasional times on dry pavement that I want it to.

    Any thoughts?

I have the 960's on my A3 and they work great. ps2's on the 911 and they work great.

That being said I remember reading a similar thread where somebody tried the 960's on their 911 and had them immediately removed due to poor handling so I would avoid them on the 911.

  21. Hi guys,

I've been looking around for a decent 996 Mk2 GT3 without much success. However, I did come across this beauty a few days ago and it's pretty much twisted my mind in another direction.

It's got 19k kms on the dial, in pretty good condition, and for the same value as a decent 996 GT3 price tag.

Do you guys think it's worth the $70K they're asking for?

Took some shots with my camera phone as well yesterday. The car has got a few stone chips here and there!

If you like the color combination yes. I prefer a 997 over the 996 any day. I have a 997S.

  22. I'm getting ready to install the 997 Third Radiator Kit sold by Suncoast Porsche. Is there a step by step procedure somewhere that show how to install it. Thanks

    elrover,

I just did this about three weeks ago. The only tip I can add is I used four wood - wood clamps on the lines in the wheel wells (2 per side) to stop all of the Anti Freeze from coming out. This didn't damage the hoses. Filled the system back up before starting the car and had zero problems.

PM me if you have any questions.

    dndodd

so did you have to drain all the anitfreeze , or this clamping of the hose prevented this

By clamping I lost 1/2 tp 3/4 of a gallon.

One other thing, look at a tip or x/51 car for the holes underneath the bumper. 4 need to be cut to let the air pass. PM me if you need the dimensions.
