  1. Yea, it only fits in the lower slot in the lower console. It's a tight fit, but it goes in. Remove the batwing. To move it down you need the following (pricing from SunsetImports.com) 996 552 339 00 01C $3.55 (Trim Ring) Optionally, I added this: 996 552 253 01 01C $25.48 (Cubby to mount in the upper slot of the lower console, above HVAC) If you are going to install a double-din head unit, you might also want the main dash frame without the bar across the middle. Will Prevent Extra Dremel Work: 552 231 12 01C $30.07 (Main Dash Frame, double-Din opening) To remove the frame above you have to remove the vents. I just yanked on mine and they popped out, but I realized this wasn't the way to do it. You can insert a screwdriver thru the vents to push on the tab (There is a good description in the PCM2 DYI)
  2. Purchased my first Porsche on December 2nd. Got my first Speeding Ticket in 15 years on December 2nd........... BUT not as you'd expect. I was on the way to buy the 996! I was driving my honda, on the cellphone, pre-occupied with the call and thoughts of a new car dancing thru my head. I saw a motorcycle whip out and pull over a car 200 yards infront of me.. By the time it registered what was going on there was one pulling me over too. 67 in a 55, double fine zone speed trap(Vasco Road in the SF Bay Area). Most Likley ANY radar detector would have saved me, even a $99 truck-stop special. I've had both a V1 and a 8500 in the past. Both have been stolen by means of Broken window in my Honda. I really liked the direction indicators on the V1. On both I would disable X-Band. Yesterday I ordered a new V1 and remote kit and plan on doing a stealth-mount up & behind the rear seatlets (they are too small to be called seats!)
  3. YES! Today I removed the little batwing at the bottom and played around with it. It feels a little snug going in, it kind of gets stuck, I wiggled it and then it snapped in place perfectly! I re-routed the wires down and around the outside of the metal piece on the drivers side (which should fit behind the carpeted trim once I put it all back together). So now I just need to order a pocket that fits the upper location of the lower console and then a trim ring to fit the HVAC in the lower-most spot. I found all the parts I need to complete this by using the SEARCH function. I wish I would have found the DYI for the Factory NAV upgrade sooner, it helped out quite a bit. Thanks for everyone's help! (I would still be trying to fit it in the lower upper-half)
  4. I have a 2002 C2 Cab. after looking thru multiple radar detector posts, it seems the best solution will be to fabricate a center "Bump" on the rear trim between the two rollover protection bars. I can then either use the V1 remote Mirror or a PC/USB integration into the carputer. This would allow for a permanent install that would work top up or down without attracting the attention of LE or Thieves (i've lost a V1 and a 8500 already in other cars when parking in strange places and not removing them from the dash). Anyone have an idea if this fabric is orderable? For this to be truley antitheft with the top down it needs to be a perfect match. My car is Seal Gray / Black Edit: I'm looking for the fabric used on part #1 from this post: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...5&hl=fabric worse case I could buy a new part for $300 and hack it up. Altho that's a pricey option, i guess it would still be cheaper than replacing a sliced softop or broken window when someone decided they wanted the V1 (plus the replacement V1). Hopfully there is a less expensive way!
  5. I'll take pictures this weekend to show what I mean unless someone solves the problem here before then. The problem isn't that there is a blank space, the problem is the module wont slide in. I don't have a picture with the pocket removed, but you can see the plastic divder that is interfering: Does anyone have an exploded view of what it SHOULD look like or all the parts I need to order to finish this up (without busting out my hacksaw?)
  6. Ok, So today I tried to put it in the lower spot on the lower console. It still didn't seem right and wouldn't go in all the way. I can see where the slot on the bottom would go, but there are no side-slots. I can also see where the unit would screw in (the lower half has two holes). I must be missing something.....
  7. Hey All, Today I tried moving my HVAC controls down to the lower console, however they seem to be Too Big!! I have seen multiple posts about the trim ring needed to move the HVAC controls down to the lower half of the console, but I didn't see anything about needing an entirely new lower console. Does anyone have an exploded view (with part #'s if possible!) of the lower console with HVAC? I have a 2002 C2 CAB. Here you can see what i'm trying to do, and it just looks too wide (it wont even slide into where I want it!)
  8. I don't have one directly from the side, but here's a closeup. The one you sent is close, but I have a much deeper dish and more bolts in the dish
  9. Hey All, I picked up my 996 Cabriolet a few weeks ago. It has upgraded 19" wheels. Can anyone help identify what brand/model they are? They have porsche crests on them, but I'm pretty sure they arn't a factory wheel:
  10. MY2002 996 C2 CAB w/Bose What are you going to do with the CD holder gizmo? I have a cd player and a cassette holder gizmo. J Greer I'll PM you when I finally yank it (it'll probably be in Late January/Early Feb after I have a door switch problem fixed under Warranty)
  11. I want to remove the Factory Becker Radio and install a double-din monitor in the Upper Dash. I need to relocate the HVAC controls to the upper-position in the lower dash (currently occupied by the CD-holder-gizmo). Is there a wiring kit needed, or does the factory wiring reach? (i've seen other people mount it down there) Does anyone have a list of all the optional (factory or 3rd party) dash components for the dash? I've seen a few posts when searching, but most of the parts seemed to be for the accessory pockets. Thanks! -Joe MY2002 996 C2 CAB w/Bose
  12. I'm planning on doing this the "hard" way. I plan on building a Car PC running StreetDeck. Any NAV system I'd be interested in would need to have Gesture-Based inputs. Sofar I haven't seen any commercial units that compare to StreetDeck. Check it out: http://www.streetdeck.com/features.php Unfortunatly, there are no good turn-key solutions for this yet. Next year the Infill G4 could be the hot ticket: http://www.infill.co.kr/english/product/g4_style.asp
  13. Is this switch assembly located in the door handle itself? After playing around with it more, I can reproduce the problem on the passenger door. When I pull the handle the window drops but as the door begins to open it pops back up. With the door open I can either tug twice on the inside handle OR lock the doors with the remote to make it drop again. Once I shut the door it goes back up. Any idea on a porsche part number?
  14. OK, I spent a little quality time with the car today and my original post wasn't 100% accurate. The Spedo / Odo / Clock turn off after 4 minutes. They also come on when you open the drivers door. Is this the correct behavior? I can see that the trip computer turns off when I remove the key. Also, I believe the door lock problem is somehow related to the passenger door. Today I tried to open it and the window did not drop down. When I shut it it almost broke the window because it was still 100% up. When I played around with it a bit it seemed confused. What should be the normal operation of the red light on the dash-mounted door-lock switch? Mainly, what does continuous-on mean? The horn seems to honk twice alot when I lock/unlock the car. I assumes this also indicates some sort of problem?
  15. *Electrical Hey All, I am the new owner of a 57K Mile MY02 6-Speed 996 Cabriolet. I purchased it from a reputable high-end car dealer (Hummer's & exotics, but not a porsche dealer) with a 3 Month / 3600 mile dealer-supplied warannty. I'm noticing a little odd bit of oddness. It seems like it could all be related. I don't have an owner's manual to see how it's actualy supposed to work. 1) When I turn the car off, the Instrument cluster (Trip Computer, Digital Speedo, etc) does not shut off unless I use the KeyFob to lock the doors. I've watched it for atleast 5 minutes and it didn't turn off until I press the remote. 2) The first night I brought it home the interior lights faded down and then turned right back on and acted like the dash (turned off only with remote). Now they seem to be behaving as I would have expected (fade off and turn off in about 30 seconds). 3) There are three buttons on the right side of the Radio . The Middle is the rear defroster and the bottom is the power top. The top switch has a lock indicator and appears to be the door lock controls. When I press one side it appears to lock the doors and the other side apppears to unlock them. If I push it while driving the horn beeps twice. Until today it has never been lit. Today while driving I hit a small bump and the red light on this switch turned on. It procceded to turn on and off as I went over bumps. Do I have some sort of Locks/Lights gremlin that is well known? I plan on taking my car to a SF Bay Area Dealer (any reccomendations?) for an inspection & service before the warannty runs out , but if this is an easy DIY fix (loose wire/connector/etc) I would attempt correct it myself. Any thoughts would be great!
