  1. Thank you for the good advice, wvicary. I don't think I added 1/3 qt of washer fluid before over-topping the coolant reservoir. I have a battery powered siphon as is used in Japan to transfer heating oil from storage tank to heater. I siphoned from the reservoir all the coolant I could. When I return in a few days, I'll add Porsche-approved coolant and feel safer that way driving to the tech shop to have the system flushed. Ah, the things we do for love. Thanks again.
  2. Stupid error. I have topped up my wife's '02 Boxster's windshield washer fluid for all these years. Today she told me the washer fluid light was on. I absentmindedly added about 4 - 6 ozs. of washer fluid to the coolant tank then realized my error. Of course, there was adequate coolant so the tank topped up immediately. My wife started the engine once as I was adding the washer fluid and the car ran for a few seconds until I told her to turn it off so the liquid would not circulate. We're going away immediately. Is there any immediate damage? Can the car sit for a few days as it is until we return? Should I have the coolant flushed and replaced immediately? Can the car be driven 40 miles to the shop, or should it be flat-bedded? Thanks for an answers of assistance.
  3. The remote/key to my 2002 Boxster suddenly no longer operates. The battery's fine, it seems; the red diode light blinks brightly as usual when either of the 3 buttons are pushed but no locks are activated. I key-open the door, quickly insert the key in the ignition, hoping to reactivate the codes, but nothing. How did this suddenly go wrong? I'd appreciate any helpful suggestions as to what to do next. Thank you.
  4. Hi, Back in January, my 2002 Boxster suddenly slowed from 70+mph to a stop. Trying to get it running it brought popping sounds plus a flashing 'check engine'. I limped to a service area and filled up. Trying again to re-start resulted in fire shooting from under the engine. At the shop to where I had it flatbedded, the technician told me to put in an insurance claim for fire damage and the insurance agreed to replace all burnt parts. Now, over 3 months later, the fire damaged parts have been replaced. But on starting the car, the tech found that one bank of cylinders is not running. The right bank chain is broken, which he says was the original problem that obviously caused a backfire and resulted in that larger fire. Now, above and beyond the insurance-covered fire problems, it's either an additional $4000 valve job or an $8000 or so replacement engine with a 2 yr warranty. Advice, please? Thank you
  5. Thanks, Mikefocke. We did have it properly flatbedded. As for warranties....bought it AS-IS. A serious Porsche shop gave an over-the-phone suggestion that it's a catalytic converter problem. Anyway, we look forward to getting this car running again and truly enjoying it. Thanks again.
  6. We just bought a 2002 Boxster. 3 hours later, on the way home, travelling at highway speeds, 75 mph or so, the car begins losing acceleration and smoothness. The temp gauge remains normal but the check engine light keeps flashing. We slow to a crawl, with lots of shakes and popping and sputtering, and gradually make it - at 15 to 25, and once up to 70 mph - to a service center about 1/4 mile up the road. The engine sputters to a close-down. We top up the 1/2 empty tank, try re-starting, and there are more sputters and coughs and shudders. Then there's a pop, like a backfire. Smoke comes out both sde vents and from under the car, then a ball of flame blows from under the car. We frantically push away from the pumps. The fire disappears but steam is still curling around the rear of the car and trough the side vents. A small amout of coolant dribbles from the car but soon stops. Needless to say, we towed the remaining 136 miles home. Eight hours later we try starting the car at home, on phone advice from the mechanic of our other non-Porsche vehicles. It starts but sputters, idles low, doesn't respond to acceleration, then shuts off with a low pop, leaving smoke again curling out the side vent. HELP!!! I spoke with a Ferrari/Aston M/Porsche mechanic today and he thinks it's the catalytic converters. I'm to call again tomorrow to see if he has room for me. Could it after all be the catalytic converters gone out in flames on this otherwise fabulous car? Thanks in advance....
