  1. IMS Failures,

I had the IMS fail on my '99 996 just 3 days after I bought it with 80K Kms on the clock ! Since then I have done a lot of research and concluded that cars that have spent long periods inactive are much more prone to this failure. For sure the original design is weak - that's why Porsche have changed it several times over the years, but long periods of inactivity are not good for an engine.

I guess the advise is 'drive it every day' ! That's what I do.

  2. I had the same problem with a 2001 996 C4. The PSM and ABS fault lights also came on. It turned out to be the Brake light switch which is in the area of the Brake Pedal and is easily replaced.

Interesting - there is no switch in the pedal area on my car.

    Are you sure?

If your Carrera has Cruise Control then you would have two switches on the brake pedal arm.

I'm not 100% sure as everyone is telling me there should be a switch there ! But I have had a pretty good look without dismantling the dash and I cannot see one. The car does not have cruise control and I can see the location for that switch and the unused harness to connect. Anyone have a picture of where it is located ?
