  1. I purchased my 2001 996 Carrera in 1996; it had 41,000 one owner miles. It was and is a daily driver. I just went over 101,000 this week and it still looks like new. I have replaced the shifter cables, the alternator, ignition switch, coolant tank, brakes and tires, and disabled the spoiler (there is a story there). There are no leaks. I have to add a little oil (a quart or two bit by bit) between changes. I had a 1985 Carrera Targa before the 996 so I know all of the rigors required to keep an air cooled Porsche in running order. I like the new philosophy of getting it right from the begining and don't open it up to tinker with it.
  2. He's wrong, you can take it apart, uses a small torx, there are no 'springs inside', there is a cable and slot mechanism that easily goes together. Your 'tech' has obviously never taken it apart as I have. Just pick the bones of the used peice you have, it's a 1hr job, max. Is there a DIY on this? Thanks, Eric
