  1. Hi all,

I’ve discovered I have a coolant leak on the left side of the engine.  Can anyone help me identify which hose this is?  Not sure at this point whether it’s the hose at fault or something else.  If there is a procedure to replace this hose, that would be helpful too!

  2. I've got a '99 C2 and I'm running BRIDGESTONE POTENZA RE960AS POLE POSITION all seasons on my car in Melbourne, FL. Admittedly, its a different situation than yours, since most of my turns are 90 degrees from a stop light, with a few enjoyable back roads mixed in. I do manage to find my share of off ramps; however, and I've not been disappointed with the decrease in handling. Its certainly noticeable, but outweighed by the more comfortable ride, lower cost, decrease in noise and increase in wet-weather performance, the latter of which is all-important during the rainy season down here. To answer what you didn't ask, I would definitely not recomend all-seasons for regular use in the snow. I grew up in Boston, and with such wide tires, I would not want to go out without anything but dedicated snows that are specifically designed to bite into the snow and ice.

  3. Not all dealers ask way too much. There's a dealer in Naples, FL that specializes in finding trade-ins before they actually get traded. He offers the seller more than they would otherwise get on their trade at a dealership and sells the cars at less than you would pay to a normal dealership or private seller. I bought my 996 from them and couldn't be happier. Try Naples Motorsports in Naples, FL. They have a great internet presence, and while most of their cars are Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Maseratis, they also sell Porsches. Since the Porsche volume is lower, you may have to be patient to find what you want. The patience pays off in the end with the lower price.

  4. I have a 99 996 C2. My car has been sitting for several weeks and when I took it out for a drive today the ABS light stayed on and the Tiptronic would not engage manual mode. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to go about troubleshooting this? I recently changed the ignition switch, but I imagine that that shouldn't have anything to do with it. Fuses look o'kay. I'm stumped!

  5. I don't have any personal experiences to impart, but I've been asked this question by friends before and wouldn't recommend it to them unless they really knew what to look for, inside and out (specific to the model car under consideration), and they are readily able to assess the full cost of repairing any issues before committing to the purchase. You can get lucky, but ask your friend why these cars are at auction in the first place, versus some dealership lot. I think he'll tell you its because it would be harder for a particular dealer to sell than what they are comfortable with selling. In fact, they may not even know any more about the condition of the car than the potential buyer!

I don't mean this as criticism (because its not), but it seems like the low price is what's really attracting you to car auctions. It also seems like you may not be an expert in Porsche repair, because I think if you were, you wouldn't be asking this question. By the way, I'm no expert either! But if buying a Porsche near wholesale price is too strong of an attraction to pass up, consider setting aside some of your potential cash savings to pay someone who is an expert to join you at the auction and provide you with expert advice. Then keep the rest for whatever maintenance you'll have to perform in the future. Hopefully you already know that even at an independent repair facility, maintenance on Porsche's is an order of magnitude higher in cost than say something like a a BMW or Audi.

  6. Lately I've been having some trouble removing my key from the ignition switch. This morning, when I tried to remove the key, I noticed that the only way I could do it was by turning the switch to the extreme left (to the stop). But once I removed the key, I was unable to lock the doors with the remote. When when I locked the door manually, I received a single beep from the horn and the lower portion of my gauge cluster (the digital section) remained illuminated. I'm guessing that I need to replace the ignition switch. Can someone confirm this for me and can you also offer some recommendations/instructions, both on the replacement and also on the parts I need to order to allow my existing key set to work? Otherwise, would it be better or cheaper for me to just order a new switch and key set?

    Thanks,

    Dave

  7. I noticed the same thing when I installed mine, and I have to believe that the track is manufactured to work on multiple Porsche models. Based on what I remember, if you compare the part that you removed to the one that you installed, you will see that the new part has a rubber and metal stop that is mounted to the track an inch or so from the bottom. I removed mine, and it operates fine now. Suggest you validate this recommendation with some of the more knowledgeable folks on this site to make sure I'm not steering you wrong.

  8. Hi all,

Does any one has the same problem? A few months ago, I noticed there is a rattle noise from the passanger side, sounds like coming from the vent trim or the load speaker on dash, now the rattle extended to the driver side too.

I can hear the rattle noise (sometimes) when idle and while driving and the road is not that rough or bumpy. At the beginning, I thought it might be the vent and a pillar trims were loose or rubbing each other, so I tried to stuck my fingers between the vent trim and the a pillar trim and the rattle did not go away. I tried to hold all different pieces on the dash and it just doesn't go away.

Any suggestion where I should check? It becomes annoying.

    Thanks guys.

  9. No experience with the franchise you mentioned, but you can get a second opinion from the Wheel Collision Center in Bath, PA. They can also advise you on the potential safety issues, which of course depends upon the severity of the damage. These guys have been in business for a long time, and the members of the BMWCCA rave about their work. I've personally used them, and I was pleased with the results.
