  1. Just in time! Glad that worked out. Did they replace both cats? No, they only replaced the failing cat (left bank). Thanks again for the tip.
  2. Update... Just wanted to thank those that replied with suggestions. In particular, I wanted to thank "htny" for the idea about the Federal warranty. I took the car to the dealer and they replaced the cat for free after diagnosing the problem to thier satisfaction. I had about 10k miles to go before the warranty would have expired, but only 1 month...close call. Thanks again all. Mike
  3. Loren, Here you go... Fault Number:P0430 Description:Porsche fault code 45 - Cat. conv. efficiency bank 2 Thanks for your assistance as always. Mike
  4. I have a 2002 Carrera Coupe with the CEL on. I checked it with the Durametric and am told it is the left catalytic converter effeciency. I assume the only way the system can determine this is by comparing the 02 sensors before and after the cat. Is that correct. Since I don't *want* to believe the cat could be bad at only 70k miles, should I try new O2 sensors first? Any other ideas? Thanks.
  5. The dash switch was optional. If your mufflers have the valve then they are PSE. Interesting... Thanks for the quick reply. Now I am going to search the forum about PSE and learn how it works...
  6. I am confused about my own exhuast system and hope you guys can shed some light... I have an 02 Carrara Coupe that I bought used so I don't know the history of the exhuast system. Anyhow, while removing the exhaust over the weekend to change plugs during my 60k service, I noticed that I have the vacuum "thingy" and ball joint rod attached to my mufflers. I do NOT have any type of PSE switch on my dash. Does this mean the previous owner swapped the exhaust? If so, does the system defualt to "loud" or "quite" mode and can I "lock" it into a certain mode? For what it is worth, I did notice the Eisenmann name stamped on the the mufflers. Thanks for any info...
  7. Here is my two cents worth... I bought a 2002 C2 back in June and was surprised to read that they do not have standard LSD. However, once I had the chance to drive mine in the rain, I swear it has a LSD. The car oversteers quite nicely and I never notice the "inside tire" spinning alone. I have driven other cars with LSDs so I feel qualified to recognize the difference. Maybe there is something else about Porsche that cuases this sensation that I am not aware of. My car does not have any "traction control" that could contribute to this either. Hopefully someone will read this thread and help both you and I understand... Shameless plug... I have just accepeted a new job in downtown Washington, DC and have to sell the car after only 5 months so if you want some details, let me know. Good luck. Mike
  8. Glad someone brought up this topic... I think I have the same aftermarket spoiler on my car (it was there when I bought the car). First, can anyone tell me what brand of spoiler this is? Second, my whole contraption seems to bounce in the wind. Is this normal or is this a function of placing extra weight on the factory spoiler? Thanks.
  9. I bought my car used (2002 C2) and have found black electrical tape in a couple of strange places. I am wondering if this is a common fix for rattles or something. The first place is on the pegs that the rear seats latch onto and the second place is the front edge of the sunroof wind deflector. Any ideas? Thanks.
  10. Not to start up this fight again, but... I have Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position tires on my 2002 Carerra with the 18" "lightweight" wheels. Is there any reason I cannot rotate the wheels/tires side to side. I think the tires are "asymetrical" but not "directional" and I don't think the wheels are directional. Is this correct? Thanks. Mike
  11. No charge. I just wanted to aviod throwing it in the trash... I will ship it out to the address listed. Thanks. Mike P.S. Now I have to figure out how to delete a thread in this forum...
  12. I purchased the manual thinking it would cover the changes to the 996 up through 2004, but it ONLY covers changes for MY2004. I have a MY2002 so it does not do me much good. If anyone wants it, send me your address (USA only please). Thanks. Mike
  13. Really? So none of the "regular" 996s had a LSD unless optioned that way. I have a 2002 C2 with no indication of the LSD option, but it sure drives like a car with a LSD. Does Porsche use some other technology to simulate that sensation. I do not have any form of electronic traction control that I am aware of either. I find this amazing and just wanted to confrim that I am reading this right. Thanks.
  14. That did it! I replaced the headlight switch and everything is good to go. Thanks to everyone on this forum for the great advice. BTW, the job was quite simple once I figured out how to remove the switch knob... I found a tip on a Boxster forum. The trick is to pull out the switch all the way (like you are using the rear fogs) and then use a small flat head screwdriver to release the little latch at the 6 O'Clock position. The rest is pretty obvious.
  15. Another reason for considering changing to 17s from the 18s is the air pressure issue... I would feel much better running *normal* tire pressures. 36F, 36R seems like it must improve ride quality as compared to 36F, 44R. I know this issue has been discussed A LOT, but I can't help think Porsche is compensating for the load bearing situation of the low profile tires on 18" rears at the expense of ride quality and tire wear.
  16. I have read several posts about failed headlight switches and assume that is what I will need. The only characteristic that is strange with mine is that if I drive for 10 minutes or so and switch the lights off and on again, then the headlights seem to work fine. The first 10 mins are a challenge...the fog lights don't illuminate the road very well at night. Is there any known correlation between the headlights and the car being "warmed up"? By the way, I have the bi-xenons. Thanks again. Mike
  17. Interesting... How does everyone avoid draining the battery when leaving electronic devices plugged in? Seems like leaving a radar detector or GPS device plugged in for a few days without driving would kill a battery??? Thanks.
  18. I was surprised to discover that the cigar lighter is always powered even when the car is off. Has anyone figured out an easy way to change this? I would like to leave a radar detector plugged in when I park the car and not worry about draining the power. Thanks.
  19. Hello, I am a recent purchaser of my first Porsche. I bought a 2002 996 Carrera Coupe. It has two options that look great, but are quickly making my life difficult. They are the Aero Kit and the 18" Light Alloy Wheels. My car is my only daily driver and I don't live in an area with perfect streets by any means. Questions: How easy is it to remove the Aero Kit and what is under there? Will the car look like a "regular" Coupe when I am done or will I have holes from mounting the body kit? How much performance (street use, no track) am I giving up by getting rid of the 18" wheels for the standard 17" wheels. Does anybody like the 17" wheels or does "everybody" want to have the 18" wheels on this car? I guess I am asking both regarding performance and asthetics. Thanks. Mike
  20. Great forum... I just purchased my first Porsche, a 2002 996 Coupe. So far I love it and look forward to a time when I am as familiar with it as I have been with other cars. In the meantime, I have a bunch of questions that I have not been able to find on the forums... Thanks in advance. 1. Where is the AM/FM antenna? In the windshield? 2. Is the stalk that controls the "trip computer" supposed to be kind of loose and floppy? Is there a way to tighten it? 3. The car did not come with any manuals...:-( Can someone list what I should have so I can obtain a complete set from Porsche? 4. Is the cigar lighter supposed to stay "live" when the car is off and the key is out? 5. How do I know if the car has the "Motor Sound Package"? I was told it does and it seems to have a nice loud sound, but do not see an option code for it. There is no PSE switch either. Not sure if those two always go together. 6. The fuel filler lid seems to be spring loaded and want to close itself while I am trying to fuel the car. Makes it hard to keep the fuel cap off the fender. Is this normal? Thanks again for any info you can provide. Mike
