  1. Figured it out Loren. My images were about 2.75MB each so I thought I could load at least one. I had to downsize them then all is fine. Thanks
  2. The support structures are just 1/8" oak plywood I had lying around. For the front I got a set of couple year old model MB Qaurts with full steel grills (I think PVF 216). They are still available on the net. I wanted them all to have steel grills to protect them. I put golf clubs in the bags so a full grill protects the speaker. On this model the tweeter can be separately mounted but I decided to leave them as coaxial. The crossovers for all of the speakers are quite large so I mounted them along with the amp in the trunk. The amp is for all of the speakers. I don't have a sub anymore. MB Quart sells an "add a woofer" system. For the front I traced out the pattern of the existing grill and estimated on where I could mount the speaker and have it fit the cutout in the instrument bezel. Luckily the speaker magnet clears everything below and the radius almost perfectly matches the bezel radius. I had to build up the edge of the front speaker mount with two more layers of plywood than sanded it to put on a nice radius. I wanted to hide the mounted screws so in all speakers you cannot see them. They are hidden behind the grill. I made sure that even though the speakers stick up a little bit they are not even above the line of sight of the wipers. I was pretty pleased with the result and the sound is pretty good too. I don't have that low sub thump thump but I don't like that anyway.
  3. Just wanted to show how I got bigger speakers into the stock locations on my 996 w/o the stereo kit from Porsche. I put 5.25" MB Quart speakers in the dash and rear panel by building a support structure. I also had a subwoofer in the stepped part of the rear deck but didn't like that so I found some MB Quart 6.5" Woofers and built boxes for them to go in the rear foot well. All of this for around $700 including the amp I have in the trunk.
  4. I wanted to show everyone how I put some larger speakers in the dash but I can't upload any pictures. I can use the attachement editor and find my image on my hard drive and it says that it is uploading file but nothing is there when completed. Help?
  5. Okay all, I have searched in here, Rennlist and 6speedonline for various muffler hack versions. Most that I have seen use new tubing to connect either the muffler "box" to the outlet, or the inlet directly to the outlet, or both. My question is has anyone cut open the side of the box and modified the internal cavity any? One of the negatives of the stock mufflers is their weight. So if you do a little cutting and remove some of the internal you might "very slightly" reduce it instead of adding more with more tubing. I was thinking of either sending my stock units to FisterD for his Stage II mod or just trying it myself since I have a MIG welder. However, finding the right tubing in stainless steel is a little challenge even though some have posted good resources for them. Guess my point is for virtually no investment I can modify the internals and should achieve similar results to the "hacked" mufflers. Anyone done this
  6. I think you may be feeling the rear engine bias of the Porsche versus your Lexus. When I first started driving a Porsche I felt that the front was not well planted. At high speeds the sensation felt more pronounced. Remember only about 40% of the weight is on the front end in a Porsche. In you Lexus its probably closer to 60% and a much heavier car. Tire pressures will play a role but I think you just need to get used to this new weight bias.
  7. Thanks for the replys guys. Bruce I have been driving the car now in manual mode (mine is a tip). Mileage went from 22 mpg to 19 mpg. No big deal if the car isn't driven much but I put about 600 miles per week on the car. I am considering sending my exhaust to Fister for the mod. I may also try to do it myself since I have a MIG welder. Easier than dealing with shipping and so forth.
  8. So George and Perucho there is no resonance coming in at 2000 to 3000 RPM? Stage 2 connects the inlet and outlet correct? I had e-mailed Darin before I bought this exhaust. He didn't have one for the tiptronic which is different than the six speed.
  9. I just put the afterhours automotive exhaust on my car. The unit is really slick and weighs a lot less than the stock system. The sounds coming out of it are great. Except for a drone at about 2200 to 2800 RPM. It is quite loud. I was wondering about any of the other aftermarket exhausts out there. Do they drone like that? I was led to believe there would be no droning by posts on other websites but it is definitely there. I sure don't recall this on the stock muffler. How about FisterDs modification of joining the inlet and outlet pipes? Anyone hear a drone with that? I am considering either having Darin perform this mod or even try it myself. I am not sure I want to leave these on the car so they may be up for sale in the future.
  10. Very nice. I didn't try the sand paper but just a polishing compound. My results were not as dramatic because I didn't go through the steps of the sand paper. BTW, just finished polishing the surface oxidation off of my hood an spoiler using Griot's polisher and #2,#3 polish. Looks much better than before although still need to do some more. Saved me from a repaint.
  11. The water pump, alternator, and power steering pump are all attached to the single belt drive on the crankshaft. When you shut the engine off, and the crank stops spinning, all of these stop. You may be hearing the air injection pump, sounds kind of like a vacuum cleaner and only lasts a short while.
  12. I have resorted to using the rear suspension mount points on each side as a lift for the rear of the vehicle.
  13. I suspected there was an issue with my motor mounts last Christmas. I have been using the engine as a rear jacking point and last year noticed a coffee like fluid coming out of one of the mounts. I also noticed that I could easily see my catalytic converters when standing behind the car. When I pulled out the old motor mounts they had extended about 2 inches longer than the replacements. Put them in yesterday and now can't see the converters. With 8 years and over 100k miles on the car I guess time has taken its toll. So if you can easily see your catalytic converter then perhaps you should consider changing your motor mounts!
  14. I am getting ready to replace my motor mounts with stock units (old ones leaking) and can't find torque specs anywhere. Does anyone know what these are? 2000 996 C2 tiptronic if it matters
  15. I did this on my 2000 back in October. The bolt you are working on has a pressed bushing that compresses to the engine housing as you tighten it. When it was originally tightened it held that side of the alternator in. I did the same as you and tapped on the screw (once it was screwed back into the bushing a little way). Took me 3 hours to get out. Best thing I did was just to rock it back and forth, kind of wedging the pressed bushing back and forth. I used a lot of WD40 and KnockRLoose. Keep working it and it will come out. Just takes a lot of work. Keep going you can do it. Cussing at it seems to help. Maybe a beer or two.
  16. Well Dave this won't necessarily help you but I had no cupholder on my 996. So I initially built a custom holder out of fiberglass. I didn't quite finish it (was going to cover it with leather but decided to try something else). I found that Suncoast Porsche sells a two cup holder to fit into the center console glove box. However, you have to leave the lid open to use it. I decided to cut a round hole right through the top of the glove box lid. Works great although you do have to kind of get used to reaching sort of behind you for the drink. It is also just out of the way of my right elbow. I don't have a picture but something you might consider.
  17. Anyone know what kind of material the stock 996 muffler is made of? I am thinking of doing the muffler hack to my stock mufflers and wasn't sure if they were stainless steel or just steel.
  18. I had a bearing go out on my C2. Noticed some rumbling sound when driving at slow speeds on smooth road (higher speeds other car sounds were too noisy to hear it). I could tell which one by turning the wheel back and forth and it became more aggravated on one side. I put the car up in the air when I was changing suspension springs and noticed that I could grab the brake rotor and move it back and forth without moving the steering linkage (it was just a quick and short little movement). Took it to the dealer and he put up on his jacks and checked with the wheel on. The wheel didn't move. He said there wasn't a problem. Then he took the wheel off and he noticed that the rotor moved just like I said. Cost to repair ~$500. C4 may be more expensive.
  19. I got all four of mine at Autohasz for $370 delivered with 3 day delivery fee included. Best price I found for Bosch/Porsche part. Maxspeed motorsport has some for slightly cheaper price but from China. I paid a little extra for the Bosch name and plug and play.
  20. Hey Dammad, I did the job on my 2000 model a couple of weeks ago. Took me about an hour overall. I did remove the airbox on my car to make it easier to get to. I ended up using a 22 mm open end wrench on both the inside ones (don't remember if that is after or before cat but they are the two more internal ones). It was pretty easy with that wrench although I was concerned about stripping the head off. Found they came out pretty easily. I have both a short and long O2 sensor wrench. There was no way I could maneuver either of those to the inside sensors. Incidentally, I changed the O2 sensors out because I had been consistently getting P0420, 0430 and one 1275? The code was gone for about 1 tank of gas. Thanksgiving eve they (P0420 and 0430 came back). I am guessing that I need to change the cats out as well now since all of the O2 sensors are new. Have you looked for new cats?
  21. General question to anyone that knows. I have a 2000 996 C2 and want to install an aftermarket amp in the front trunk along with crossovers for the front and rear speakers. I was going to mount them on a board in the trunk in front of the spare tire. Question is will I be clear of the gas tank? I assume the gas tank is behind the spare just below the battery area. Will I be clear of the gas tank up front? I know on the pre 996s the gas tank was right in the middle of the front trunk floor area.
  22. I have owned both a 2000 328i coupe slushbox (sport package) and currently own a 2000 996 C2 Tiptronic. Both were(are) used as daily drivers. I will give you my experience briefly. Both the BMW and my Porsche have been mostly reliable. Both cars were purchased with high miles ~ 70k. I kept the BMW until about 110k. The 996 has about 105k. I work(ed) as much as I could considering that they were both daily drivers and couldn't afford to be without one for very long. I added some Eibach springs to the 328 and didn't like it (too rough for daily commute). I removed the lowered Eibach's that came on my 996 for the same reason. My personal belief is that the BMW is a better all around car. I could fit 4 in it mostly comfortably and had a reasonable size trunk. I could get 28 mpg on the BMW. I get about 23 mpg on the Porsche. People that have ridden in both cars prefer the BMW (most comfortable but still providing a sporting edge). I have a friend with an M3 which he has let me drive (SMG). Excellent car, BMW really knows how to appeal to a broad market. However, I have owned my 996 for about 1.5 years. Almost the longest of any car I have ever had. Even the BMW I got tired of within about a year. I don't seem to be growing tired of the 996. I am usually the only person in my car so it just matters to me how it feels. Yes it is a little rough and if I go to lunch with a group I usually get them to drive. But on the roads I drive going home it is a blast. Really appeals to my senses. Plus, I'm a little narcissistic and like the attention (mostly). Everyone thinks you have to be racing when your in the car so be prepared for some attention you don't want. Could be the bright red car with the aero GT3 package I guess. I haven't had any RMS issues but that may be due to the Tiptronic tranny. I have read that the manual is more harsh and could lead to issues. Don't know for sure. Also, I can't respond as to the differences in performance for X51. When I got my 996 it was a good deal for me so I had to take whatever options were on it. However, even with my Tiptronic and base engine it is still way faster than the BMW. Get a PPI. I had one done and maybe that is why I haven't had too many issues. Still in the 1.5 years I have owned it I have spent probably $5000 fixing and improving it. Some of that work I did myself. Some I had to get a shop to do because of lack of time and even some tools. Be prepared to be spending some money.
