  1. Yes ... i'm referring to wheel bolts. Any other ideas?
  2. I have a 99 996 and the (black) paint is coming off the calipers in a few spots. It kinda looks like someone did a poor job of bleeding the brakes and let fluid run down the calipers. Anyway, I have seen several kits for sale to re-paint them. Has anyone done this or used any kits that are available on the market? If so, which and how did it work? Any info, difficulty level, watchouts and tips would be very helpful. Thanks
  3. My 99 996 Cab lugs are beginning to rust in a couple of places. I have seen this before on other cars. Outside of replacing them (functionally they are still fine) has anyone cleaned them up before. If so, how? I'm sure that I could sand blast if that was an option but it's not. I'm looking for something that would be possible at home. Thanks
  4. I think that I got this one figured out. In one of the earlier notes ... it was stated to use the Krytox "extremely" lightly. This is critical. Use it very lightly and the noises go away completely. Dan
  5. I did the TSB upgrade and used a little Krytox and still had a sqeaky noise between the top and the front of the car that it seals against when clsoed. I tried more Krytox and more is definitely not better. It squeaked loudly at every turn / bump. Very annoying to say the least. I wiped all the lube off and it's a little better but it's got to get better than this. Does anyone have suggestions before I go see a dealer? Thanks
  6. Make sure you pick someone good ... I have seen 'bad' work and it's worse than the cracking in the seats ....
  7. They use some kind of synthetic material that I think gets painted on. The person that I used made the repair, smoothed it out then airbrushed it. You cannot even tell. I had several repairs that took her all day and the total cost was near $275. If you get someone good ... it's worth it.
  8. I think this is a pretty common problem. I know that my 996 has the same issue. Call the local dealer or just ask other local dealers who in your area does good vinyl / leather repair. I have had several scratches and cracks repaired and they come out perfectly .... Dan
  9. I've been trying to identify several minor (but annoying) rattles in the dash area of my car. One of the rattles was resolved when I temporarily removed the storage containers below the stereo. My question is ... as I find minor noises like this ... how do I fix them? Is there something that I can put on the parts before I re-install or re-attach? I know this is a common problem as there are a lot of plastic parts on the 996's. Any thoughts, help or experience would be much appreciated! Thanks
  10. I think that several people have talked about this on the site. I had a 99 boxster and got a puff of white smoke infrequently (i.e. 1-2x per month). I think that this is also discussed on Pete's Boxster board (another good resource for Boxsters)
  11. I have used both and both work fine depending on what you need to do. With the ramps, I can only back onto them. They won't fit under the car so that I can drive up on them. Obviously, if the wheels need to come off then there is only one option.
  12. I also use Lexol and know others that do too. They make a good product for a reasonable price.
  13. Help !! My friend has a 1999 Boxster with about 32k miles. It just had the 30k service (2 weeks ago) and all has been great since till yesterday. Last night, he was no longer able to shift into 5th gear. Everything else seems to be fine, he just cannot put the car in 5th gear. Has this happened to anyone else and if so ... any ideas on what's going on?? Thanks Dan
  14. I'm looking for a little help with a few questions ... I have a 1999 996 Cab Tiptronic with about 31k miles. 1) I changed the oil a month ago and all is good but the oil pressure is "high" when the engine is not fully warmed up. I have seen this question asked before but don't remember the answer. Until the car is warm, the oil pressure is pretty much pegged at 5 bar (or 5 bar+). When warm, it sit in the middle of the range (2-3 bar) at about 2,000 RPM. I know the manual say 3.5 bar @ 5,000 RPM. I'm almost positive that at that RPM i'm well above 3.5 bar no matter how warm the engine is. Can anyone give any advice one this?? For reference, I used Mobil 1 0W 40 for the oil change and the oil filter that came from Suncoast Porsche (i'm sure the correct one) I'm also curious how high the pressure can get before there is an issue. 5 bar is only 75psi ... What pressure will burst seals/gaskets or damage something? (Just curious, clearly don't want to actually find out myself) 2) My rear tires are wearing in the center. They are P01 Rosso's 265/35-18. I have included a pic. My tire pressures in the rear are about 38 psi warm. The fronts are about 34. The pressures were higher (per the porsche spec) but I reduced because I thought the higher pressures might be the problem. Should I go lower in the rear of could there be a different issue? Both rear tires look exactly the same and the fronts are wearing perfectly. 3) (final question) ... The covers for the locking mechanism on my Cab are loose and rattle quite a bit. The 2 covers that i'm referring to are the ones that you can pop off to manually operate the top (see picture). One person that I talked to said that they were warped and should just be replaced. I can do that be they seem fine to me and I was hoping that I could secure them somehow. I know that I can glue them but was hoping to find someting semi-permanent that would secure them and also keep them from rattling. Has anyone had any luck with this? Thanks
  15. I have a 1999 996 C2. I ordered the parts for the brake job from Sunset Imports in Oregon and the part numbers for the front pads don't match what I asked for or what is in the DIY Instructions. I requested part# 996-351-939-16 (per the DIY) I received part# 996-352-949-02 I ordered all the other parts and they all match. I checked on a brake supply web site and they had the part number that Suncoast sent me as the correct part for my front brakes. Can anyone confirm that these pads are indeed correct. Thanks Dan
  16. Who did the paint work for you on this? The painted ones look great! Thanks
  17. The parts are available from Suncoast Porsche in Florida. Just search for them on the web and talk to their parts department. The parts are apparently only available as a european part number. I only ordered the front latch. It was about $80. Not cheap ... but better than buying the whole assembly. Dan
  18. Thanks for the help! I will order the parts and hopefully the noise will be a thing of the past ... Dan
  19. My 99' 996 Cab top has a minor rattle that seems to be becasue the top has not closed as tightly as it could be. The rattle sound only happens when going over rough pavement. Is there a simple way to tighten up the cab top so that it seats a little tighter when it is closed. This is not a huge issue but a little annoying to me. Thanks for any help ... Dan
  20. Thanks for the quick feedback. I measured the rotors last night on all the wheels and all were 0.5 - 1 mm thicker than what I read is recommended before replacing. Looks like just a brake job and i'll be set for now. Thanks again! Dan
  21. Did you end up changing the rotors out? If so, was there anything else that you ran into. I know that I need to change the pads and I need to measure the rotors. Hopefully they are o.k. If not, any learnings that you coud share ... parts, tools, watchouts ...etc would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  22. Thanks for the info Loren... I also got this contact via email. Apparently Suncoast Porsche was able to get the handles several months back. Dan ----- Info below from member s1ee ----- Try Rick Knab at Suncoast Porsche (Sarasota, FL) 877-923-1700. He was able to get them for me a couple of months ago.
  23. The DIY pages are great. I would actually like to replace the latches/handles on my 996 but I cannot find just the handles. I have purchased other items several times from Sunset Imports in Oregon but they told me that i'd have to purchase the whole assembly. At over $400, this just doesn't seem to make sense to me. Does anyone know where I can get just the handles (even part numbers) and approximate pricing? or ... has anyone touched up the silver paint themselves? Thanks for any responses in advance... Dan
