  2. I installed a back-up camera this past weekend. I purchased the rear license plate camera and it works great. The boxster has the rear tow plug behind the license plate so routing the cabling was a snap.
  3. I had a similar situation when I changed my manual transmission fluid on MY 98 Boxster. They say never drain the tranny fluid until you make sure the fill plug can be removed, else you will have no way to refill the tranny or get to a shop unless you tow the car. The drain plug on the tranny was a 16 mm triple square with a hole in the middle for the drain plug. I tried removing with one without the center hole and stripped it badly. To get the tranny drain plug out I drilled a hole in the center with a 1/4 bit and drained the tranny fluid. I then used an easy out and crescent wrench and the plug came out with no issues. If the receiving threads on the oil pan are stretched or stripped and you need to replace the lower part of the pan the cost for that will be way below dealer prices and access to the pan is very easy to get to. In any case it's a good example on using a crush washer and use a torque wrentch so you don't over tighten on the re-install. Maybe others can share their experience, in any case good luck and keep us posted how you resolve your dilemma.
  4. Manual Front Trunk Cable If your battery is dead and you need to get into the front trunk, it may be necessary to locate the manual pull wire to open the front trunk and get to the battery. This might be more difficult to locate the first time. You may not be in a good location to wrestle the right front tire splash guard to find it. It might be night time or you may not be dressed in the correct clothes to be down by the tires trying to locate it.   5. If your battery is dead and you need to get into the front trunk, it may be necessary to locate the manual pull wire to open the front trunk and get to the battery. This might be more difficult to locate the first time. You may not be in a good location to wrestle the right front tire splash guard to find it. It might be night time or you may not be dressed in the correct clothes to be down by the tires trying to locate it. I would recommend that you take the time to locate it in good weather and in the comfort of your garage or better yet re-route the wire to the front bumper behind the plastic plug the hides the location for the tow fish eye bolt. To get started I removed the carpet liner in the front trunk. The front trunk liner is made up of 2 sections and I only had to remove the front section. There was one thumbscrew clip on the passenger side and one thumbscrew clip opposite on the driver's side. Also on the driver's side there was one snapin clip and 2 additional snapin clips located in the front of the trunk. All five clips are very easy to find and remove. I then removed the plastic trim directly on top of the front trunk latch and microswitch. There are 4 screw plugs and you simply turn the plastic plugs 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn: I then removed the passenger side head lamp by using the tool in the Boxster tool kit. The kit is usually located near the spare tire in the front trunk. Turn the wrentch about 1/2 turn counter clockwise to unlock the headlamp. Slide the head lamp out. You may have to jiggle it a little but it should slide out with very little effort. Once the light is out you will be able to locate the pull wire. It is clamped into a lasso at the end. In the photo below you can see it at the end of the red arrow. The red oval in the top of the photo is the plastic wheel splash guard. The passenger front tire is directly behind that. Some recommend to access the pull wire from the tire side but that is a little more difficult and you still have the problem of trying to re-rout the wire up to the front bumber. Doing it from the head lamp side makes it easy. Here is another photo with my finger pointing at the pull wire. Remove the front bumper plastic cover that hides the tow plug. I used a plastic upholstery tool and the plastic cap popped right out. The plug has a fishline wire connected to it to prevent you from losing it. Use the light from a flashlight to guide you (from the front bumber side) and re-route the pull wire from the headlight to the tow plug. Having the top plastic guard off makes this very easy. Tuck the pull wire back in and re-insert the pastic bumber plug. Reassembly is just the reverse. Slide the headlamp back into the guides and push it home, use the wrentch and turn clock wise. you will hear a loud pop when the headlamp is secured. You know have easy access to the emergency pull wire.

  7. My 98 Boxster's front trunk compartment light has never worked so I decided to investigate. I first swapped the light assembly itself with the exact same light fixture in the rear trunk and found both lights worked. I deduced that it must be the front microswitch and ordered a new one from Sunset Porsche in Oregon. The cost was: $43.13 plus $8.00 shipping to Washington State. The Part number is: 996-613-206-00 I removed the carpet trunk liner. The front trunk liner is made up of 2 sections and I only had to remove the front section. There was one thumbscrew clip on the passenger side and one thumbscrew clip opposite on the driver's side. Also on the driver's side there was one snapin clip and 2 additional snapin clips located in the front of the trunk. All five clips are very easy to find and remove. I then removed the plastic trim directly on top of the latch and microswitch. There are 4 screw plugs and you simply turn the plastic plugs 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn: Take a 10mm wrentch and loosen but don't remove the two bolts inside the trunk that hold the latch: Then remove the metal backing plate: Remove the 10 mm bolts the rest of the way. Disconnect the harness by pinching the clips and pulling: Next you need to remove the harness from the metal attachment clip by sliding the clip and releasing it. This one is hard to reach and see and a flashlight might be necessary. The photo below shows the release clip after it has been removed: The assembly can now be removed. To separate the microswitch, examine your new switch and you will notice 2 clips. The photo below shows one of the clips. To disengage this clip you need to take a thin blade screw diver push in as noted by the arrow on the photo and you pull up as you press the clip in: If the first clip is placed at 1:00 o'clock the second clip will be at 7:00 o'clock and it simply hooks over the assembly. When installing the new switch, place the 7:00 o'clock hook on first and then snap the 1:00 clip into place. You may have to work the swich down into place just slightly before hooking and snapping. Assembly is the reverse of the removal and Bob's your Uncle and the front trunk light works!

  9. Koen De Poorter The Pin assignments I listed above are for the stock 6 channel amp in 2003 and 2004. Not all 6 channel amps will work. I believe the 996 Cabriolet Amp M490 is the only other one that will work and that PIN assignment is different. What AMP are you using?
  10. You will need to shave off this tab on the white part of the amp. Here is the pin asignment. Make sure you check and recheck. Once pins are installed in the harness that attaches to the white receptacle, they are difficult to remove without a special tool.
  11. I recently upgraded to the 4th stalk when I turned on the OBC. I will sell my 3 stalk for a reasonable offer.

  13. I recently replace my AOS and the middle oil filler tube. The middle oil filler tube goes from just inside the engine compartment to near the throttle body. On mine it had a mesh sock that is designed to protect it fro the heat in the engine department. It connects to another tube that connect to the engine. When I tried to replace the middle tube, I was not very careful and I snapped the ears off the tube that connects to the engine. here is a link to the project as posted in the 986forum LINK HERE To replace it you need to remove the tube between the the intake manifolds. It is pretty straight foraward. Some remove the intake on the passenger side (6 bolts) but I was able to install without removing it. Good luck. K. Brandsma 98 Boxster
  14. I tried calling my voicemail at home and at work and they both sound very tinny and like I'm calling from a tunnel. I'll try a few different things and may end up mounting the mic where the console and the dash meet directly below the present location. If you find out anything let me know as well.
  15. Ralstrom, I mounted my mic, GPS antenna, and CD-BTB200 in exactly the same locations as you have done. My microphone however, sounds like it is in a tunnel. Did you do anything speacial like foam around the mic or some type of packing behind? How does yours sound?

  17. My Pioneer AVIC D-3 came with the Blue Tooth Adapter and Ipod Adapter. Any ideas on where to place the BTB-200 and where to tap into power at?
  18. I did not disconnect my battery. I wouldn't think it would matter. You will need a Durametric or PST2 Tool or equivalent to clear the AirBag codes and Airbag light after cleaning. Good luck and let us know what happens!

  20. Hi Jay, I recently bought the same kit. In the directions they will explain how to use the existing trim kit to fit the opening your suggesting. I placed my AC in the bottom DIN and purchased that trim piece from Sunset Porsche for less than $10.00 including shipping. Good Luck! Getting ready to complete my installation this coming week.

  22. I purchased the Pioneer AVIC D-3 and was trying to confirm the hook-up for the rear speaker kit. The rear speakers are currently installed in my CDR-220 Radio via the brown plug to the middle slot in the rear of the radio. Has anyone done this HU upgrade and if so did you also connect your rear speakers and if so where? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
