  3. Tip or Stick?

I was looking at your maintenance.... AOS $600 and Tranny Service $313

those are at an indy or dealer....

(I did DIY for both of those)

you change your own oil ? (also 9q and 9.3q... do you not change filter every time?)

congrats on the miles... I am at 108k and happy today knowing you are still running strong ! ! !

    hello,

it is Tip, and yes an independent shop did my aos and tranny. i am sure i could have done the tranny but aos ?? isn't the engine have to be lowered for aos??

i had to take my car 2 places then a dealer to find out it was aos, it wasnt smoking just making squeaky noise.

one place, while they had 2 959 's setting under the cover and 10 or so 996's there for service they thought it was the transmission.

another place same type of cars being service but thought it is the engine.

took it to the dealer paid the $300 or so to diagnose then to a independent shop.

how hard was it to do replace the aos ??

i do every oil change and do change the oil filter every time.

    my 996 hit 150000 today

  5. hi all, my 02 boxster S 6 speed with 80k miles has been having vibrating metal hitting noise. first thougth is loose parts in the exhaust system ( heat shield, cat. convertr, etc). it is ongoing for the pass 20k miles i never really look into it too much, until one day i decided to take it to Midas. the guy showed me with the car lifted the source of noise and thinks its coming from the transmission. with the car at idle, i hear from the transmission area metal grinding/ rotary sound, but this is differrent than when the engine is ravved up the vibrating metal noise becomes very noticeable. if i drive in the alley or somewhere that creates echos, you can really hear the noise. its mostly in 1st and 2nd gear at start up or on reverse, also louder with higher rpm at idle or taking off. a local shop shows me a loose arm/bar attached to the outer trasmission next to the muffler and thinks that's part of the problem. he suggested the only way to fix that is a new transmission but its ok to drive the car.

i have the clutch replaced at 32k miles now its at 80k but it still drives fine. no problem with changing gears or any unusual feelings when driving the car. i have an appointment with a porsche guy this week but would like to know if i can get some info regarding this or if anyone's having the same problem.

    Hello,

I have a 996 see if this info helps.

  6. There are 64k miles on the car.

I am in the process of putting the car on the market to sell and now they say I need a transmission. The car has been maintained so I'm not sure how the transmission can just go after 64k miles.

I'd say it is time to find a non-dealer to work on that car. Unless they've pulled it apart, how do they know it can't be repaired with new synchros, or what not? Perhaps they figure 'screw him, tell him it needs a new tranny, mark it up 50%, see if he's desperate'

    Where are you?

call sunset imports talk to jeff for a transmission

  7. I started hearing a sound from the engine at idle only when engine is warm. It sounds like a dry bearing but it come from the back of the engine, mostly hear it between the back wheel and the door on the passenger side. Only at idle.

    Any ideas ??

    hello every one

now after have few places check out my car, one said engine is bad and one said transmission, now at the dealer and they say it is the oil separator for $3500 .. any one knows if that is a good price ??

A new AOS is under $200 - even at MSRP!

I suggest you get another opinion.

    Hello everyone

All fixed it was a Oil Sererator circle imports (long beach ca. dealer) wanted $3500 for it, thanks to loren i shopped around and got it done for less then a $1000. :renntech:

    Any ideas ??

Not sure how many miles are on your car, but it sounds as if it possibly could be one of the the idler pulley (s) or tensioner pulley. Have you replaced and when?? I think it is a part of the 60K maintenence schedule ( I'm sure the belt is, not sure of idler pulley(s)??). If it happens with the AC off, switch on and see if the noise is still present or does it disappear as the idle speed will change slightly. This would give also point to one of the the ider pulley or tensioner pulley beginning to show excessive wear. There are two idlers and one tensioner pulley as I recall. Cost is about $70 for upper idelr and ~$85 for the lower idler and tensioner pulley. Good luck!!

    Demosan

    hey demsan

135,000 miles and the sound is from the transmition..
