  1. Hi guys,

Just had this done on my '98 Boxster 3.4L

The issue is with the coolant level.

We continue to monitor the coolant level and just when we think things are fine, the coolant light flashes.

While driving the temps are fine so I'm not worried about over heating, however, the level indicated for coolant is low. We top up, I drive a bit, think things are resolved, then light flashes, haha!!

Is there a difference in size from the 986 "S" expansion tank and the non "S"?

Also - Should one replace the water pump at the same time? I'm thinking of replacing the water pump and upgrade to a low-temp thermostat.

Any thoughts and long term updates from those that have completed this upgrade would be much appreciated.

I have no leaks and have put well over 100km's since the upgrade.

    Cheers,

    Mike

  2. When dry fitting the bumper prior to sending out for painting I noticed a few missing screws and attachment parts. I'm looking for the PET diagram to confirm missing parts and any needed additional parts for the 3rd radiator.

Can you post what parts you were specifically missing (not including anything for the 3rd radiator).

I have the same bumper but won't be mounting this until the end of April/May. Since I have a lot of time I can source any missing parts while I watch the snow fly!

Also, if you could post pics of the bumper mounted that would be great!

Loren - Thanks for posting the PET diagram. How does one get access to these?

  3. What have other's done? Does anyone make a MAF housing that would work? I believe that the 996 MAF housing has an inside diameter of about 85mm.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    George

    Hi George,

I also have a 3.4L converted Boxster that continues to get MAF related CEL's.

I have purchased the airbox lid from a 996 3.4L and have had the MAF Housing professionally removed (i.e. Cut Out) to install in the Boxster.

On my conversion, the builder installed a resistor inline with the MAF to block the signal and ran the conversion with the stock Boxster MAF housing.

The plan is to remove the resistor, install the 3.5" MAF Housing and a K&N Kone filter intake.

Due to my work schedule I won't be able to complete this for the next couple of weeks but will update once completed.

    Cheers,

    Michael

  4. In the past I filled the tank with Sunoco 94 but am hearing people concerned about ethanol lately so may rethink that this year. Did not use any stabilizer and car started fine in the spring.

I purchased a Porsche smart charger so didn't worry about the battery stuff - it worked fine to maintain the charge.

This year I'll do the oil change as well before storage :)

Where are you planning to store the car VRsyncro ?

I plan to store the car in my garage. I have the Porsche Indoor Car Cover, as well as the trickle battery charger. I'm not too worried about the tires as I have a set of 17's that came with the car that will be used for storage.

Last year I was caught off guard with snow starting in Mid-November. No chance to really detail the car, oil change, prep, etc... Didn't even have a full tank of gas and finally thought it was a clear day and actually got caught in the snow with the Boxster, so decided to forgo any further adventures with the car and call it a season!

AcadianDad - Is there a large community of Boxster owners in Ottawa? Just wondering as i'd like to get more involved next summer.

  5. I had a discussion with local dealership in Ottawa - should I change oil in fall prior to storage - or - in spring prior to the new driving season ??? They recommended spring so any debris could work its way to the oil pan ... hmmm  Its gonna get pretty mixed up in the process of driving the car to the dealer for service / heating up the engine to change the oil warm ...

Seems to me with the DE miles I've put on, etc. that there could be lots of contaminants in the oil by the end of a season and better to change in the fall ...

There's probably lots of opinions on this on the forums, but wondering Loren, what the "official" line would be ?

    thanks

    Hi Acadian Dad,

I am in the Ottawa area as well and was wondering what I should do to prepare my car for winter?

If I change the oil in the Fall, are we to change again in the Spring as well?

Do you place any fuel stabilizer when storing?

    Other?

Looking to store in the next couple of weeks.

    Cheers,

    Mike

  6. Thanks Chris, the car is 2003 2.7 with 50k, no other issues regarding this particular oil leak....no loss of oil etc, although I do have an axle shaft oil seal leak but thts another matter. out of interest does the AOS become blocked? what actually goes wrong with it, I find it hard to imagine its a complicated part.

i'm not sure exactly what happens to the AOS. but suffice to say that it does not do its job of separating air and oil (vapor) and ends up feeding oil into your engine (not good). you will know when this happens because the resulting cloud of smoke will engulf your neighborhood (not kidding).

Found out today that my Oil Filler Tube is leaking as well. Is this a big job to fix?

Also, once replaced, will this clear the CEL i'm having? (Have asked the garage to pull codes for me).

    Cheers,

    Mike

  7. Well just a quick est. so far...

Turbo, wastegate, oil feed and return lines = $350 shipped

Intercooler, bov, piping = $250 shipped

    Datalogger = $50 shipped

    Wideband o2 = $200 shipped

    Oil pump = $75 shipped

Oil tank or cooler = $50 shipped

5 Bar Fuel pressure regulator = $75 shipped

Misc. stuff ? Probably another $300 to be safe

So $1350 projected for parts budget. Since I'm going to be doing the labor myself, hopefully I can budget a full day to get the turbo itself on. The wideband and the pressure regulator will probably have to take another day. BTW, if your wondering why everything seems so cheap, I'm doing this project on an ebay cheapy build.

What kind of Turbo are you getting for $350?

You'll also need to also figure for a custom downpipe and exhaust manifold. What type of intake manifold you would want to run (stock, custom). I'm assuming stock compression on the engine.

VW/Audi Tuners have tonnes of turbo setups based on upgrading the Fuel Injectors and Custom Tuning using the stock or an upgraded MAF. These are closed loop setups, so instead of using an annoying blow-off valve, you would use a Diverter Valve (DV). These systems also work with the stock FPR, and boost is regulated by the wastegate (type of spring you choose).

There's a lot of things to consider when going Forced Induction. I would read Corky Bell's - Maximum Boost for the basic science behind Turbocharging.

    Cheers,

    Mike

  8. Well that is the joy of the internet. Actually my opinion is that thanks to people like Loren, Tool Pants, and Richard Hamilton to name a few, Renntech is the best of the boards as far as getting the correct technical information.

The PST2 has the maps, it is just a matter of reflashing the dme.

    Todd

I agree with Todd 110% on that statement. RennTech.org offers more comprehensive technical information than any other forum that I have ever participated in. Coming from the VW world, it is quite the breath of fresh air to find the level of maturity and dedication that is found on Renntech, and Rennlist.

  9. Its an exact copy of the evom exhaust. It's quiet at normal driving and loud when you stop on it. I have a clip on you tube. If you search boxster exhaust on you tube, my youtube name is DSMJim I think. I have a few clips on there from my car.

I would highly recommend the maxspeed exhaust it sounds great looks great, and boy did I feel that extra 5hp hahahaha.

Hey Jim, found your video, sounds great! Are you running upgraded headers and cats as well?

Also noticed you used to run a MKIII VR6? I just sold my VR6 Turbo. Glad to see that all paths eventually lead to Porsche :)

Just wondering what the ID of the pipes going into the exhaust are for the Maxspeed setup?

Anyone have experience with the Fabspeed or Instant-G exhaust setups?
