There is now an option to rebuild it, but given the cost, unless you live near ATL, I'd go for the reman from Porsche option since it includes a 2 year factory backed warranty and you know it's factory fresh. This really sux. Low mileage 911s are not as desireable, in my eyes, than one that's been run regularly. Cars are built to be driven. Good luck.
  2. I bet it's the clutch switch. What happened was I'd go to start the car in the morning, turn the key, electrics work, everything works... turn the key, nothing happens. Crickets. I try again. Sometimes nothing, sometimes it starts just fine. i think the dealer charged me around $300 but most was covered by my warranty. I recently replaced the clutch switch, battery, and starter motor. The car fires up like it's built to light up a small German city and their weiner schnitzels on the bar b... everytime.
  3. I think it'll look anachronistic in the 996 interior. Any mixing and matching from a 997 to 996 and vice versa is mixing and poorly attempting to match original design considerations from the factory. Best bet would be to get some of those 996 GT3 bucket seats since they're lower than stock 996 seats if you really need that extra headroom. as an aside, the 993 sport seats have the most beautiful hardback design. second goes to the 996. the weakest sport seat design is the 997. they messed up.
  4. ride quality on my 19x12 with 25 profile tires on pss9s is excellent. firm and sporty just how a 911 should ride. my toyota suv? super smooth, soaks up bumps. just how it should be.
  5. honestly, the wheels you have are budget wheels. likely cast, too. made not in japan or germany, but probably some huge wheel factory in China. maybe $300-$400 a wheel. nothing wrong with this, but it is what it is. be xtra careful with them over rough roads. no one is gonna be able to tell you from pics what the specs are. you'll have to get a measuring tape and do it yourself and then post pics.

  7. Update Car starts up like a Lambo Murcielago. :D The starter engine whirring is much quicker if that makes any sense. I got a new starter, not a rebuilt one. I have no idea if that makes any diff.
  8. it all depends on your wheels/tires. you need to make sure the wheels u have now have the proper width and offsets so that when you lower, u don't rub. i'm guessing they're probably 11" in the back? maybe even 10"? you'll have to share with us what you're running to give u a better idea around fitment. i run 19x12 315/25 tires lowered on pss9s, zero rubbage cuz they fit. here's my personal testimony: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=25975
  9. my indy told me that mobil 1 reduced the zinc and whatever compounds like u said. so he uses lubrimoly (sp?) 0w-40 on my car. he says it's much better quality given the recent change in formula at mobil 1. again, what i am saying above has just as much conjecture contained within as whatever statements you have made in the past, present and future. lol
  10. update i found a source where i can get a new porsche starter for $260 yay might as well go with a new one.
  11. loren is correct. it's cool that there's the whole core charge refund so the part itself is easily $500+ new, but for a rebuilt one from porsche, the net is $160+ or so out of pocket. little things are needing to be replaced at 60K miles. -clutch switch -starter -suspension noises (but i am slammed on Pss9s) otherwise, been great!

Like a crafty veteran, I did search and I think I know what it is, but wanted to confirm with you guys. -Cold starts up just fine -New battery a couple months ago -Full 60K service with new coil packs and plugs a few weeks ago After I replaced the battery, the engine cranked with greater vigor. Now, say I drive to some destination, park and start it up again, the car sometimes struggles to start. I've read that it gets worse over time. Well, I think it's getting progressively worse. it only happens after the car's been run then sitting around for me to start it up again. Thoughts?
  13. Oh yes, Loren, thx for the correction. it's good to know since i'm approaching 60K here and i am expecting some odd noises and mechnical issues per Pete and his track buds in about 300 or so miles.
  14. really? is that why you've been kicked off every internet forum? this is the 996 forum... do you see people taking about turbo's anywhere? B) yes, i'm quite the talk of the town and certainly you're talking about me too. ;) the banning was all absolutely under my control. if i didn't want to get banned, i wouldn't have period. holla at yo boy. and the 996TT transmission note is to provide additional info since we are in a 996 forum. you can find a wealth of threads describing 996TT transmission issues whereas with the carreras, not so much. compare and contrast. 996TT engines considered "bulletproof" and i'd say from my readings the carrera trannys are just as "bulletproof" in comparison to the 996TT transmissions. to which i'm attempting to curb your boy cry wolf claim that lots of 996 carrera (since you boxed us in) transmissions suffer from various undesireable issues at your magical 60K miles based on 3 or so of your race car hobbyist buds, et al. let's get a grip here. i'm not a porsche fan boy to chalk up the engine fiasco as nothing ... but to then claim that the 996 carrera transmission is also a weak point in the car is one in the same... WEAK. the 996 carrera transmissions are solid, reliable units and should NOT get the reputation spread around the interweb that they begin to fail post your unicorn 60K number.
  15. 996 transmission issues are not rare... especially @ 60K miles and beyond... pinion bearings.. whiring/whining; gears popping out and crunchy shifts... lots of cars suffer from these symptoms... I believe 996 use brass synchros and there are a lot of shops out there who replace tranny fluid with synthetic thinking it is a superior fluid... fact of the matter is that brass and synthetic don't mix... you cause damage... there is a great video I found that illustrates the failures of 996 transmissions and what typically fails... the synchros are just one part... there are spider gears that fail and of course the bearings.... If 996 tranny issues are not rare and I rarely hear about them posted on 911 forums, then given the frequency of engine failures we ALL read online, the whole M9X engine program has got to be an absolute engineering joke! You need to listen more carefully then cause this year I know of four 996 needing new tranny's up here in Toronto... and about 3 others I know who track their car have already replaced/repaired their transmission... and they are not on the forums... and yes the M9X engine program is a joke.... blown engines are probably more common than 996 tranny issues... sorry, though i love reading up on forums, my life beyond the vicinity of a comp and internet connection isn't porsches. from my reading, tranny issues are more common with the 996TT (diff tranny), much less so in the carreras. as to the M9X engine program being a joke, you said it.

  17. I believe the tranny like the engine must be replaced as Porsche supplies 0 individual parts for both engine and tranny thus rebuilt engines, rebuilt trannys from the factory as whole units. :( I think a new tranny costs nearly as much as a rebuilt engine?
  18. for item #10, you should consider having them replace with the 997 coil packs. they're better parts as the 996 coils tend to crack over time.
  19. I have this creaking noise when turning the steering wheel at low speeds and comes up only after the car's been warmed up and driven around for some time. You think the inner/outer tie rod end replacement would rid of the noise?
  20. 997 coil packs are in. 60k service is complete. everything checked out great. no leaks. slightly torn cv boot got replaced. car is dialed in. my 911 is happy and so am i. :)

  22. it's not all that uncommon to have the original coilpacks crack (engine hesitation), and my indy says the 997 coil packs are better units
