Well I used some Castrol, GTX of course?
Anyone installed one of these lately? The O rings are a sort of light brown almost tan color. I say the "rings" because the lower neck (not the bellows) where it goes into the case looks like three rings or a ribbed sleeve resembling three rings.
Anyway It wouldn't "slide right in" so I got it started then tightened the two 10mm mount bolts underneath until flush. Looks like the third ring (or 1/3 of the sleeve) is visible outside the engine opening. Seems to be pretty square so I'm not too worried.
Anyone know what the three fittings do? I know the J tube feeds air to the breather, but that leaves the lower bellows, the lower neck to engine case, and the passenger side hose that attaches like the J tube.
Just wondering where the most pressure exists or if there is really any to speak of.
I replaced my AOS last year and it was too tight to push home IIRC - I did the same as you by tightening the 10mm bolts a bit each until it was flush. I assume the bellows and the other bottom connector are crankcase gas exhaust and oil drain back - not sure what the other top connector is, clean air in?

Ive started the facelift, got all the parts I and am taking pics for a complete DIY that I will post
very soon. Body shop has the parts for prep. and Ill take my car in for the swap and complete
paint and wiring next week. btw I have an extra set of the wire you need to do the
facelift. PM me if interested.

Engine oil, grease, petroleum jelly is all fine, no problem with that.
DON'T USE PETROLEUM JELLY!!! Vaseline is known to rot some types of rubber so unless you're sure it's best to avoid - plenty of alternatives

Hi everyone, I have a 99 996, done a couple of mods thanks to renntech :renntech: , I recently finished my PSE installed w/switch, and starting
a 02+ facelift. I did alot of research and got all the necessary parts. My only problem is the pricey$$ wiring harness for bi-xenons.
1- I can find connectors for headlight, but is the wiring the same on my99 and 02+ bi-xenon, I have retrofit litronics so no auto-leveling.
2- I thought using 02+ bi-xenon wiring diagram and my99 diagram, I could try matching pin to headlight. will it work or I need to do other mods.
I read about this in http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...&hl=harness, but the topic stops. and am sure the other alternative
than spending $$$.
Im just waiting to figure out what to do about this issue then I'll start the facelift project. And I thought since there's alot of unanswered question
regarding older 996 to new 996 conversion, I will do a step by step w/pics of the project in the DIY section.

I made my own harnesses for my 02-on 996 halogen headlights which I retrofitted with xenon lamps and ballasts (the light units and lenses/reflectors are the same so can take xenons with no worries). I cut the connectors off of the old fried-egg headlights and soldered on new wires and used some coloured heatshrink and shroud. The lights fired up with no problems and built up to a steady bright white light, (4300K) power consumption is rated at 35w so shouldn't be any problems running on your standard loom (55w). Start up current shouldn't be a major issue either - quoted currents are typically less than 6A for most 35w aftermarket systems.

sorry if this is repeated but i need a couple of parts...... whats the best place in uk for second hand parts.... ot can anybody tell me how much the rubber bellow bit under the rear spolier should cost... ive seen the section on fitting it ! mines ripped 50% width now i need to sort it asap
porsch-apart.co.uk seem to have a comprehensive selection whenever I've used them, though saying that some parts from OPC aren't all that much. coolitautomotive.com are pretty good too

has anyone done the facelift that could give some insight.
you can use the older headlight tray fixings but you will need to completely dismantle them - they are construced from a softish alloy so they come apart with moderate force. Once dismantled you will need to reassemble either side of your new wings fixing holes - hope some of this makes sense, just done a similar job on my Box'

Fenders, lights, lights wiring harness, and bumper cover.
you would also need new headlight trays... anybody know what wiring harness changes would be needed? The sockets on the respective Box halogens and 996 Litronic units are very different.

It's definitely worth checking this out if only to eliminate it is as a possible cause... if you can find the top of your engine you can do the check! AOS is on the rhs of the engine at the rear of the inlet manifold, with a corrugated plastic pipe (approx 3/4" dia) running to the air inlet pipe. Disconnect this pipe and stick your finger in - if it comes out oily then that oil will get sucked into the motor and cause your smoke.

This is an easy update but it does take some parts and $$$$
thanks Mike - any idea what additional parts would be required? I haven't got a fender/bumper/PU yet and I was guessing that the supports are the same/similar for a >02 996 and Boxster
PS - did an AOS swap following your guide a few months ago - cured the smoking problem completely, thanks for taking the time to publish the guide.

just acquired a pair of late 996 Litronic headlights (teardrop shape) for my MY'00 2.7 box. I'm on the lookout for a suitable matching 996 bumper/PU and prefer the look of the more subtle GT3-type to the GT2/Turbo-type. I've seen photos of the conversion elsewhere so it's not an impossibility but wondered if anyone out there had attempted the job themselves and would care to share their knowledge with me. I realise that the Litronics have motors in them to adjust the beams but I'm assuming in the absence of a signal instructing them to move about they'll choose to stay still.
I'm quite a proficient home mechanic with a full selection of hammers and chisels.

was the battery disconnected prior to the fault? if so I would look at resetting the idle characteristics following the procedure in http://www.cannell.co.uk/996_Workshop_Manu...0%20General.pdf and look in 996Workshop/Entire Vehicle General/General/Power Supply.......
probably not this but you never know
