elach replied to elach's topic in 996 Series (Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Targa)It's hard for me to distinguish where the noise is coming from. I would guess it is from the rear. the sound is not so much a whine as it is a hum and it is not like it gets louder the faster I go. It is more or an occurring not occurring sort of thing. When I am in fourth gear or above at or above 3000 rpms, the hum occurs. so it starts at around 55 to 60 mph and is audible only when i am pressing the gas.
Hello everyone, I am hearing a faint high pitch tone when I reach about 3000 rpms in fourth gear. I don't experience it in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear, but once I shift to fourth and reach 3000 rpms I hear the high humming sound whenever I press the gas. If I take my foot off the gas the sound stops. It occurs in fifth and sixth, but it's harder to notice because of road noise. Any idea what this could be? 1999 996 C2 coupe 6 speed manual 80,000 miles Thanks, Ed
elach posted a topic in 996 Series (Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Targa)Hi, I have 1999 996 C2 manual with 72000 miles. I am experiencing a thumping or ticking sound as I coast to a stop. The sound reminds me of when I was a kid and used to put a playing card between the spokes of my bike to make it sound like a motorcycle. The sound completely disappears upon any touch of the gas pedal. Also, it does not occur after giving it gas while stationary in neutral. Any ideas on what this could be? Thanks Ed
elach replied to elach's topic in 996 Series (Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Targa)I found the posted topics on replacing the ignition switch, this seems to be my problem, right?
Hey guys, I just got my 1999 996 c2 coupe, manual 6 speed, 60,000 mi back from an independent shop for the 60k maitenance. When I parked the car and went to turn the key to 0 position, I got pressure pushing back that wanted to stay some where between the 0 and 1 position. I can push pass the pressure and remove the key, but the loud gong sound comes on like when you open the door and still have the key in the ignition. I put the key back in and jiggled it around to try to trip any sensor, but the car doesn't recognize anything. Also the ignition still seems to want to be in that 1/2 position. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Ed
elach posted a topic in 996 Series (Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Targa)Hi guys, I am a relatively new 1999 996 C2 owner with 54,000 miles. My brake wear sensor turned on so I followed the very helpful DIY article to replace the front pads. I am concerned with how my old pads wore. The outside pad of the front passenger side wheel was worn significantly more than the inside pad of the same wheel. That outside pad was the only one triggering the sensor. The inside pad thickness was not close to triggering the sensor and neither were the two pads of the front driver side wheel. Should I be concerned, and if so what should I be looking for? Thanks
elach posted a topic in 996 Series (Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Targa)Where in the Orange County/ Los Angeles area can you find 93+ octane fuel?
elach replied to elach's topic in 996 Series (Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Targa)30 seconds is probably conservative, maybe it is a couple minutes.
I recently purchased a 1999 996 C2. When I start the car after it has not been driven for a few hours, there is a high pitch humming sound that lasts for about 30 seconds and then shuts off. After browsing the forums for a while, I am under the impression that it is the secondary air pump. Is this how the pump is supposed to sound? It seems rather loud and is kind of annoying. Any suggestions? Thanks.
