  1. The engine management will adapt to lower octane. I remember a show on TV (dream car garage I think) putting a 996 on a dyno and comparing the results with 87 Octane versus 91 or 93. I don't remember the difference but it was very small. 3 or 4 BHP I think. Colin
  2. Good advice. Many thanks. No other strange issues. The ignition switch was replaced last year to fix those. The battery is about 3 years old although I've been noticing the same but less severe issue for a couple of years which is what made me think of the starter. I'll double check what the battery voltage does while the engine is hot and cranking slowly but checking the connections sounds like a good plan. Thought I'd left those kind of problems behind me when I sold the 928 :)
  3. I think I need a new starter for my 99 996. The car starts fine when cold but cranks very slowly when hot. Barely starts in fact. Anyone have any advice or instructions? I tried the search but it just seems to give a long list on non related things. How about a source in the Toronto area? Is it just the dealer or are there other options assuming it's "standard" Bosch item. Thanks Colin
  4. Did you wait long enough? It will beep (mine does a double beep actually) about 30 seconds after you set the alarm.
  5. I'm not sure what caused the problem. About all I can think of is corrosion under the clamp or some sort of road debris clobbering it. I see no physical damage however and haven't looked under the clamp. Perhaps I should. It seems strange that we should see the exact same fault. Perhaps it's just a weird coincidence and you an I are the only ones who will ever get the problem or perhaps we're just the first of many!! Lets hope not. Colin
  6. I believe it's just plug and play. Perhaps that should be unplug, plug and play!
  7. To answer your other point, there is oil in the system to lubricate the compressor. You've likely lost only a small amount of the total and it's unlikely to have caused any damage. I'd be inclined to keep the air off until it's been checked out however. Colin
  8. That sounds suspiciously like the problem I have. There are a couple of black aluminum a/c tubes that run front to back on the passenger side (drivers side for you I guess) and I had a leak right at one of the clips that hold them to the underside of the car. The dealer is replacing both tubes. It seems like a co-incidence that both would fail but maybe it's a precaution or perhaps they're incapable of figuring out which of the two has failed. A couple of hundred $$ for the parts and 3 hours labour. The bad news is that one of the tubes is on back order until the end of June! All in all, pretty poor. It took 2 1/2 weeks to get an appointment to have them look at the a/c plus a check engine light problem. They had it in the shop for nearly two weeks after which I still have to wait another 4 weeks for the tube to arrive. That's well over 2 months to fix a simple a/c problem. Assuming it's done by the end of the month that is. Colin
  9. I posted a few days ago about the 1531 code I got on my 99 C2 after the check engine light came on. That translates to a cam timing problem on bank 1. Well it's been at the dealers for a couple of days and things are beginning to sound a little too ominous for my liking. They've ordered in a variocam solenoid but have raised the possibility of the cam chain having jumped a tooth. It seems a bit unlikely to me but the service advisor gave me a story about the 996 motor being designed with very loose timing chains which explains why so many of them have chain noise when first starting. If that's what it turns out to be I wont be a happy camper as it will no doubt cost something more than one arm and leg to fix. Anyone heard of anything like this before? Colin
  10. I doubt anyone can add to the advise given by Loren except perhaps some no doubt opinionated thoughts on the Porsh/ Porsha thing. In my humble opinion (fwiw) the way to pronounce any proper name is the way it would be pronounced by the "owner". It seems like a common courtesy if nothing else. That would suggest that "Porsha" is the way to go. I should also add that I find myself using the "Porsh" variant from time to time. To bad that (what I understand to be) the correct pronunciation seems to have been associated with snobbishness in some circles. Colin
  11. Dumb question #2. Where do I find the DME relay. Jeez I hate not having the workshop manuals for this car. Colin
  12. Dumb question, bank 1. Driver (L) or passenger ® side? Thanks Colin
  13. Wow, thanks for the quick reply Loren, I'll check that out and see what I can see. I'm very relieved that it doesn't sound like anything major. In the mean time, given that this kind of info is absolutely priceless as far as I'm concerned I've just popped over and donated to the maintainance of this site. Feeling kind of guilty that I haven't done so already actually. Thanks again Colin
  14. My first post although I've been checking in from time to time for a while now. Well the check engine light came on on my 99 C2. The scanner says P1531 which is "camshaft adjustment Bank 1". The car idles poorly but runs just fine off idle so I'm thinking it may be variocam related. No other error codes such as TPS show up so hopefully it's just a cam position sensor rather than something mechanical ($$$) inside the motor. Anyone run into this one before? I have an appointment at the dealer next week but would appreciate any input. Having just finished paying for my sons university education ($$$$$$$) I'm hoping for a "reasonable" repair bill if such a thing exists with these cars. Any and all input is much appreciated. Colin
  15. I've never tried it but VW, Audi and Porsche all use the ISO interface so your existing unit should work just fine for all the standard codes. I suspect that Porsche specific codes are only available with the $$$$$ Porsche test tools. Colin
