  1. Nice! So it is possible after all to just open the thing up and weld the baffle in. As for my case Porsche is replacing the muffler under CPO, so no need for the transplant exercise, although I still think it is very doable as well. Cheers!
  2. Yeah, I am looking at a couple of used mufflers on ebay, will MK1 muffler work on MK2 996? Does anyone have a part number for driver side 996 MK2 stock muffler? Thanks!

That is crafty, Loren! :) Looking at what you have done to your stock exhaust leads me to believe that I could just transplant the PSE bypass pipe/valve mechanism from my rattling muffler onto the new stock muffler ($523.14 @ Suncoast) thus solving the problem and saving a bundle. Thanks a lot for the idea! I will definitely be looking into implementing it!
  4. Right, I took it to an indie shop today and they immediately told me I need a new muffler. The cost of driver side alone for just the muffler is around $2,600. Looking at aftermarket options now.

  6. I need a driver side myself. Just spoke with Suncoast Parts, they quoted me $2,567. Definitely ain't cheap! Has anyone tried to cut it open to see if it is repairable?

  8. I have a 2004 996 C2 with PSE and 35k miles. This passed winter the car started developing slight rattling exhaust noise when driven cold, somewhere between 1k to 2k rpms. The rattle would go away after the car got to a normal operating temperature. It has gotten a lot worse since the winter. Now it sounds a lot louder and as if something is knocking inside the muffler metal to metal. It takes longer to go away and even when it's hot you can still hear noises as if something is loose inside the muffler and it just rambles around. The noise is coming from the driver side only. Switching PSE on and off does not affect the rattle. Since my car is certified I took it to Porsche of Rockville for diagnostics. These geniuses recommended replacing exhaust tips and conveniently quoted me 800 for the job. The recommendation didn't make much sense, so I took the tip off to test it and sure enough the noise is still there. Has anyone experienced that? What else can I do to isolate the problem? Thanks for your insight.
  9. Are you sure it's not just the road noise? 996 is a noisy car in general. I have an 04 C2 with sports chassis and sports exhaust and it took me some time to get used to hearing and feeling road surface changes, bumps, grooves and the constant road noise in general. To put things in perspective, my friend has an e46 M3 competition package (not exactly the quietest car out there) and every time I ride with him I am taken aback by how quiet and soft it is compared to my 911. I really like my friends car but the raw feel and the sound of the exhaust is so much more engaging and fun to me. I AM LOVING EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!! :D
  10. Thanks for all the info. Here is the deal: the car is completely stock and was used in Skip Barber driving school. They have all the records for scheduled and unscheduled maintenance although I have not seen them. I hope it is worth the extra money.
  11. Hello Ladies and Gents, I am looking to purchase my first 911 and I've recently come across a 996 that has about 10k miles worth of track use. I would like to get some feedback as to what kind of impact an extensive amount of track use would have on the overall mechanical condition of the car. I am trying to determine if I should even bother setting up pre-purchase inspections etc. I know 911s are meant to be driven hard but how much is too much? Everything has its limits, you know. Please share your experiences and opinions. Thanks and regards!
