  1. well, i've joined the ranks of people who shelled out big bucks to join the dream of pcar ownership and got me a bad engine:( After two coolant tank failiures my indy was suspicious of the stress fractures on the last tank. Pressure test revealed the coolant was disapearing, but no leaks in any other components. Thus, it's seeping into the engine:( with just over 106k miles i guess it's not as bad as others, but hell i've only put on 35k of those. What a **** ball situtation. After I joined this forum and saw all the doom of these m96 engines I was very worried because I didn't stumble across this information while researching to buy a 911. Well, a good year and a half of ownership i guess, but now i"m stuck with a large bill and 4 years of payments for metal can in my driveway. Heres a toast to the blown engine club! cheers:(

It's downright evil porsche would make such a bad engine design and sit on their hands knowlingly. What comes around goes around. Anyway, had to put my parting shot at those bstrds.

sucks to hear your story man i feel for you.

there's still a large contingency of porsche fan boys on porsche forums who continue to deny that these stories somehow represent but a nominal quanitity in the big scheme of things.

    i disagree.

the stories are far TOO common in this NICHE communication place to have the engine catastrophies be .... inconsequential.

call me paranoid, but if i had an m96 original engine, without a warranty aka insurance policy, i would seriously have trouble fully enjoying the car.

yep. i completely agree and had that feeling before this happened. So whatever, in the end i made the purchase willingly. I thought i was buying the best car for the money(newest is best), but i wasn't. I was originally going to buy a 1991 964, but didn't because the interior was too narrow, and thought the 99 was newer and more reliable. Nope. Or at least, probably not. Anyway, thank you for the feedback guys. I actually contacted Jake right away because I know his work from the Samba forums on wasserboxer engines and have full confidence in his modifications on the 996 engines. However, 15 grand is 15 grand and I don't have it tucked away as of yet:( So, i have some deep thoughts ahead of me. Best of luck to all those in similar straits!

  3. i know i know. i wasn't trying to start the grenading engine paranoia thread. Hell, my 99 C4 is 106k on original engine and running strong. But, i know that down the road the time will come, as it does with every engine and the electric option peaked my interesets for several reasons. One, i like the idea of not having to worry about constant maintanence. Two, i like the idea of taking on an intriging project. Three, i believe oil prices in the future will return to extreme levels. And lastly, the price point seems to be coming closer to viability. Thanks for all the reply's and ideas. Something to ponder when the time comes:)

  4. yeah...i would want Jake to hook mine up as well with costs as no factor. But for future consideration the electric option has perked my interestes. As long as the range is acceptable. I installed my own solar power system at my house, so I figured I could more adeptly retrofit my 911 on my own and save a bundle..because I don't have the expertise to do a conventional engine swap.

  5. Hi, i was wondering if those who have had their engines exploded considered switching over to electric. It seems the price is fairly comparable and even cheaper in some situations, especially if you have the time to retrofit it yourself. Any thoughts? Just thought I would throw that out there, because i've been considering this if/when my engine needs replacement.

  6. I have discovered a coolant leak today while doing my oil change. I have been smelling coolant over the past 2 weeks after driving as well. The level is fine, and the tank was replaced this past summer so it should be good. However I have attached a pic to show where the leak is flowing down. I can't seem to pin point the problem. but it seems to be coming from the bottom of the tank. I can't however see it directly as there is too much stuff in the way. What is at the bottom of these tanks. Also I found a lose hose with no connection hanging down...is this a overflow hose? Any troubleshooting tips would be great help. TIA

  7. hmmm..okay. Thank you for the tips RFM. Yes, it looks like the water drips from the windshield, then over the flexible pollen filter shield and down the hatch where it leaks into my interior. The pollen filter shield is warping downward in a "smile" so I figure that is a main problem. The other drainage lines worry me as I haven't located them yet. Thanks again. I'll post back soon when fixes are made, and hopefully problem solved....if not i will need some more direction! lol Thanks again. Danke!

  8. Okay, i've heard of people having this issue and searched the forums and thought I fixed the problem when it came back. I cleaned/blew out both drainage lines in the front truck area. By the battery. Drove it through a rain storm and no new issues. Today I parked the car on a hill facing down hill and found the leak had resurfaced. I attached some pics. I can't seem to find the moon roof drainage lines. I've seen the diagram loren posted. Any advice or tips?

  9. Thats funny, i mean sad actuallly. Those people seem to be those who bought the brand as "im rich look at me crowd" or "Respect my car, its worth more than yours". One of the great feelings I take pride in being a member is the comadary(sp) that you talk about. I wave, beep, thumbs up every chance I get and mostly you get back the same. Hell, i'm usually more excited about seeing another porsche than mine own half the time! However once and a while someone in the other seat just doens't get it...because the passion for the brand and the essence of the shared history isn't there. I recently came up on a beautiful red 964 in my area. I pulled up past him on the hwy and gave him a thumbs up and two quick beeps. He followed me on the exit and came past me with 2 beeps, no hand gestures and a sort of smug pissed off look on his face:( So i share you feelings. It sucks to see that, and takes away a little of the gleam off porsche ownership.

  10. Ditto that! Hell, i feel like an old grandma with most of these drivers on renntech! I used to shift at 3500 rpms and thought that was being "nice" to my engine....until I found out it likes 4-6 MUCH MORE! LOL. The power band doesn't kick in unil you get those rpms up there:) Don't ragged it out in first, but after that...LET HER GO!

  11. sorry 1999 C4. Yes, it's supposed to be clipped on, but it must have been partially broken in a previous accident. I used some PB weld and it's on like donkey kong! lol. Sorry to post a meaningless question, but I figured someone might have had this happen and had some good feedback on a better product to use. But it seems that PB weld is holding up nicely.

  12. Silver, help me out. How are you flushing your system? I've never messed with this before. I poured a shot glass or so in the resourvoir yesterday and this morning the same noise was there. I checked the level today when the car was cold and it only registered at that "cold" tab on the bottom of the stick. the manual I think says that the level should be "below" the cold tab or in that area. So i'm not sure i'm reading it right. But def. let me know how you are flushing your system. Danke!
