  1. On Friday my buddy and I installed short shifters (OEM) in our cars(his-Cayman S and mine 997). Loren had provided me with some excellant advice.

    Happy to Gus! Loren's advice was to put tape on the cables to fix their location before disconnecting from the shifter. If you do that you can put them into the short shifter in the same location. If you don't do this then you need to adjuct with the tool included with the Factory linkage.

  2. Loren recently advised that there are 2 part numbers for the CDC-4 cd changer. One begins with 996- and the later one that begins with 997- does not supercede it. There are some great deals to be had if I can find out why the different part numbers. As far as I know they both are designed for use with fiber optic cable. Can any one differentiate? Thanks in advance!

  3. I bought a used (2 weeks) APR cat-back system. I spoke with them on the phone today and found them very accomidating. So, their systems are made by B&B? They are good looking. I hope they perform as well as they look! lol I know there has been discussion recently about rear bumper removal for exhaust install. APR highly reccomends it. What to do?

  4. I have located a new cdc-4 cd changer for a great price. I want to install in MY06 C2. I have already had installed the correct cable for this install. Does the part number for the cdc-4 begin with 996-? Has it been superceded by 997-? Will part number 996-645-140-02 work in my car? Thanks in advance!

  5. Well so much for my genious! I see what you mean about sizes! First off, 305's as far as I know are the biggest tires you can put on the rear wheels of a narrow body car if they are 11's or 11.5's. Second your tires look they are in good shape, not worn down to the bars. You can measure depth of tread to be certain. As far as wheel width, it would seem to me that there would be some markings to indicate width, if not, remove tire and measure. While most of what I know has to do with Porsche or BBS wheels and applications for 997s, I think much of the same info works on the 996.

  6. To echo RFM's post, you need the green alignment tool to ensure the new SS is in the absolute neutral position before you connect the cables to the linkages. You say you purchased the OPE units - did the tool not come packaged together with the frame?

    As long as you made sure that before you removed the linkages from the original item, the cables were both in the neutral position, you can set the shifter shaft by eye (if you didn't have the tool) and without moving the cables, connect them as close as possible to a neutrall positioned SS.

    In other words, its perfectly possible to set the OEM SS without the green alignment tool, but it'd take a little more preperation and checking, whereas the tool would allow a bolt on, clip on and refit in half the time.

    If the gear shift pops out of gear or you feel there is not enough movement to engaging a gear, then you'd need to realign the cables using the tool. This may not happen immediately, but you may be in the clear.

    Be aware however, that because the short shift reduces travel, it increases the forces on the joints/linkages. If the cables are not correctly aligned and you start having the above problems, you run the risk of doing damage.

    I think I'll be taking the console apart again. I was afraid this might be the answer. I did drive 200 miles after the install with no problems, is that enough time to tell?

Since the cars are basically the same, for this job, we worked on them at the same time. A key tip that Loren provided was to mark th cables with tape to avoid adjustment later. Things were going so well that I forgot! My friends car went together easily and works fine. Mine did not go so well. The first time I attached everything together I had no reverse! I adjusted until I got all working.

    The question is-just because the car shifts fine, how do I know all is adjusted correctly? I really felt dumb because marking would have been so easy!!!

    I'm running 19x8.5 frt w/48mm offset and 19x10.5 rear w/ 38mmoffset. Tires are 245/35 and 285/35

    I'm trying to help my friend decide what upgraded wheels and tires he can install on his '07 Cayman S. Unlike the 911 which has piles of information available to answer wheel and tire questions, I have not had any luck with the Cayman. Can someone point me in the right direction regarding widths, diameters, and offsets? Also any spacer info would be helpful. He has 5mm spacers available to him. The 986 and 996 models were pretty straight forward and interchangeable. Same with 997 and 987????

    Thanks for the info! What wheels, brand/name, are you running? They are beautiful! Is your car lowered? PASM?
