  1. Hi,

    I just bought a used 04 Cayenne S. When I start it and change it to D from P....it goes to D2. Is that normal? Shouldn't it go in D1? If i use the tiptronic "-" it goes to M1 but if its in automatic mode it always starts in D2. I didn't pay attention to it until yesterday. Did I get ripped off? Any response/help is appreciated.

    As others have stated it is normal. Also note the transmission will switch to D1 if you drive under 5mph for a few seconds after a standing start at D2.

  2. I have a 2004 Cayenne S and I recently received a warranty extension notice from Porsche on the coil packs so maybe 2005 is also covered.

    Ask your mechanic if the 3 plastic coolant pipes underneath the plenum have been replaced with the aluminum ones. Mine failed around 80k miles and that was a tough job to replace and expensive if you let a dealer do it. Downtown LA Porsche was quoting $2,500 for the job.

    My right side horn stopped working and that was replaced for free under extended warranty. But it was am easy $100 job if you did it yourself.

    Last thing is the cardan drive shaft. Mine broke and was repaired under warranty.

    That's the experience I've had with my cayenne. The car runs wonderful and I have no plans to replace it.

  3. What I'm curious about are the people that have proactively got the coolant lines replaced? My thinking is that if it's going to happen eventually, I'd rather get it done proactively, rather than waiting for it to happen and then potentially cause other problems indirectly (e.g. starter). I only have 27k miles on my 2006 Turbo S, but I'm not sure if its a matter of miles or age for the coolant lines to go. At this point, I'm more inclined to just bite the bullet and proactively get the job done. What are your thoughts?

    I was not proactive and just waited for it to happen. My pipes failed at 67,000 miles (2004 Cayenne S). I was driving at night and got the low coolant warning on the freeway. I knew what just happened and exited. I filled up my coolant reservoir with some distilled water I was carrying in the trunk for this very moment and made it home 20 miles later. I ordered replacement kit from Sunset Imports in Beaverton OR and my parts arrived in 2 days. I spent most of Saturday replacing the plastic pipes with aluminum ones.

    In total the Cayenne was out of commission for 7 days from the point of failure. If the car is not your daily driver I would just wait and keep the cash ready. If you depend on it for regular use then I would plan to change them proactively at a conservative 40k miles.

  4. I drained the oil out of the bolt closer to the filter and when it was done draining I was able to drain about another quart from the second drain plug near the differential plug. So if you don't drain both, you would probably have at least a quart of old oil in there.

    On a side note, I stripped one of the bolts that holds down the driver's seat when I was changing the battery under the seat. I had to use a bolt extractor to get it out but it worked after hitting it in place a couple times with a heavy mallet.
