  1. sorry to dig up an old thread, but I'm new here and this seemed to be the exact topic I was hoping to explore... I come from a DIY background and have built many one-off turbo cars (i.e. starting from scratch with a welder and pile of mandrel bends, building the headers and intake tubing, completely revamping the fuel system, wiring in a standalone engine management system, etc.)... personally, the building and transformation of a car is what's most enjoyable to me... (not to mention that $40k+ for a "real" turbo motor seems completely insane being as i've built motors that made 1400hp for $10k) so let's say a person doesn't care about building a part-for-part identical vehicle to a factory TT, but rather just wants to turbocharge their N/A 996... let's talk about strength of the components: common sense would say that if the engine, tranny, clutch, axles, etc. can handle the extra hp from a supercharger then why not the same increase from a turbo? are there known limitations of the N/A motors? what sorts of things are fundamentally different from the TT motor? is it actually a different block? different cylinder head castings? how about the tranny and the rest of the drivetrain? at what power level does the N/A 6-speed tranny become "iffy"? i'm not looking to get too radical with the project, but at the same time, i've never owned a "sports car" that made less than 450hp and I'm not about to start with my first Porsche! any pointers to good tech info along these lines would be greatly appreciated! thanks, Jeff
