02 S Key isnt working... HELP

My car only came with one key... last owner lost the other I guess. Speaking of.. does anyone know where I can get a nice key that wont cost me $300 at the dealer? -
I just bought an 02 Boxster S (65k miles in good shape) I am in the midst of running through all the little things that need to be done to the car to make it 'like new' and what happens? My remote stops working on the key! Yeah the key int he door thing always works, but what is the point of having a remote when it doesnt work. So far here is what I have done: 1. Replace Battery in key - duh. 2. Tried resetting the central locking system by disconnecting the battery. All this did was make me realise I forgot where the previous owner said he put the radio code. 3. Got the car to go into 'standby' mode. Turned key in door, alarm went off, stuck key in ignition. Alarm is off, everything works fine, just not the remote... Any suggestions?
