  1. Though I did the exact opposite, I would get the S2000. It's a better track car. I have a Boxster because I love the sounds it makes and the way it looks. I have also always wanted a Red Porsche, but the S2000 is a better car for what you want to do. After 1 autocross and a track day in the Boxster, I bought another Subaru STI to use on the track and keep the Boxster for it's beautiful sounds.

  2. I plan on doing mine in that fashion as funds allow. I plan on ending up with a 2.9 high compression engine with 260-270hp, carbon fiber hood, trunk and fenders, light weight battery, all sound deadening removed but I'm leaving the carpet, GT3 console delete, GT3 seats, coilovers, headers, 2nd cat delete and undecided on exhaust. It's Guards Red so I plan on GT3 like "Boxster" down the sides and replica multi spokes. The only extra weight will be the rear cargo bin and speaker, but those can easily be removed.

  3. Just driving with your high beams and fogs on will give you enough time to slow down if your laser detector goes off. Driving with high beams and fogs on can also make you stick out.

Best way to not get a ticket is not to speed. Next best is don't exceed 9mph over, next best is pick a rabbit (the fastest car on the road) and follow him about 1/4 -1/2 mile back.

  4. I you have the list of upgrades yet.

Long story short -- the problem turned out to be a sheared water pump shaft which allowed the engine to overheat

causing the freeze plug in one of the cylinder heads to blow -- which caused the coolant to mix with the oil.

So I didn't require the new liners.

I did get the LnEngineering IMS upgrade.

Replacing just about everything else that isn't nailed down, from bearings, to all timing chains, hoses, belts, AOS,

seals, rings, clutch, brake pads, and battery. Everything stock except for brake pads.

Will be putting it all back together starting next week.

    Mike

What did it cost you in parts?

  5. Hi Guys,

May be a little OT, but have you guys seen the price of the rebuilding at Autofarm.? Okay they are doing the Silsleeve rebuilt cylinder block at the same time, and this is UK pricing, but still all options are 11K (US) plus.

I was under the impression that if you exchanged your core, a 03 996 factory recon engines from someone like Sunset are available for 12K US. Wouldn't most people go this route in the event of a situation like the above?

I simply wouldn't spend more than 4K for a rebuild. Say 3K for parts + 1K for labour. Anyone know how many hours it takes to rebuild a M96 engine to see if my labour is fair?

Might be, since the rod bolts broke as wel as the beam too, but the crown of the piston looks baked, like it was well done under boost :-)

You will NEVER get a motor rebuild with parts for 4K it will be more like 7-8K, the parts are not mass produced like a SB Chevy you can order from Jegs. I personal y would rather have a rebuilt then a new motor since when you rebuid it you improve all the weak points.

That's about what you would pay to have a Subaru WRX engine rebuilt stock. It looks like Raby is coming out with a program to help owners do the rebuilds themselves, so that might be an option for you. Would certainly address the labor cost issue.

  6. notorious IMS failure+cracking sleeved cyl liner+ now timing chain falling apart,,,

& There still isn't a factory recall? WOW

Yep and Mobil 1 keeps feeding them money getting the "recommendation" too..

It's OK, we are certainly on top of solving the problems they created...

I couldn't use Mobil in my STi, for some reason it burned through it like a hooker on a meth binge. Don't ask :offtopic: I have been using it in the Boxster because of Porsches recommendation, but have not been comfortable with it after seeing many oil analysis. Jake, what would you recommend? My car is well past warranty and there would be no hope of getting any help if it blew due to me being the second owner and the previous owners lack of documentation for service. Due to that, I am not really worried about Porsches recommendations or suggestions.

  7. Nope. 1st one died at 95K. I have pretty much replaced everything on the car but the rack and the tranny. :wrench:

Wow, 162,000 miles. That's the most I've seen for a Boxster. Are you on the original engine?

****, got my hopes up. Mine has 62,000 miles and I'll just hoping to get to 100,000 before I do a swap. I just don't have the clams to do it now.

  8. Butt dynos are very tricky to calibrate properly. Find a local dyno day before you do any upgrades and dyno the car after upgrades. Try to match conditions as close as possible and you will probably find that those telling you to expect 10hp are correct. If you want a better sound, by all means get an exhaust, but I wouldn't expect a lot of extra hp.
