  1. PTEC....that is great. Very reassuring. I am making the appt this week to get it done. Thanks for the info.
  2. The rears will not fit. The 996 rim is a 10x18 and requires an ET of 63 or 65.
  3. One more thing, the suggested ratio for front and rear combo's is 225-40/265-35 for the 18''. I wouldn't suggest altering that or you start to bring understeer into the equation.
  4. A couple of things you need to be aware of: 1. There are cheaper tires out there but unless they are N rated (porsche approved) then you are on your own. Personally, I would not put on a tire that was not Porsche approved N rated. 2. There are different sizes you that you can put on different size rims. Your 18' rims have a width as well. Depending on your width will dictate what fits. You can go onto the tirerack website and select your tire size that you would like to try and then hit "specs" for the tire you choose and it will tell you the size rim that will accomodate that tire. FYI....your rim width and offset is stamped onto your rim nextr to the valve stem.
  5. SO2 Conti's PZero PSRib
  6. Jim, your take on this is really absurd. Clearbra is personal prefernce like tires, mods, etc. so let it go. If it is done right it is virtually undetectable and there will be NO rock chips nor a need to repaint as you want to do. ONce again, personal choice. As for your take on what to do with the $$$, and to spend it on a RMS is an extremely pessimistic view on a repair that will probably never happen. Some get it, some don't.
  7. First off, you CANNOT replace just one tire if the thread depth differs by more than 30%. Second, the rim needs to be replaced. Refinishing it will NOT result in a look identical to a factory new wheel. I just got done dealing with the same thing with my insurance guy. Gauge in the rear tire, I explained you can't replace one, so he gave me money for both. Second, He wanted to repair the rims and instead I told him that you cannot replicate the finish of the sport design wheels with repair, he agreed and replaced them. The body pieces (not metal) can be repaired without replacement. As for the rental car, that is just life. You are NOT going to get a car of comparable value or style. Deal with it or pony up the extra cash. I was given a Kia Rio for $25 a day. Trust me, it sucked! But that is life. I was just satified knowing that my car is back to original if not better!
  8. Dealer charge for the tank replacement can push $800. Labor charge on that sucker is 4 hours and the parts are $300-400 depending on if you need the cap as well. FYI...what I just quoted you is for a 996. While I am sure it is close to 986, you will want to talk to your dealer first to get the totals.
  9. While I am sure you can do some of the pieces as a DIY, this is one of those things that I rather leave to the professionals. Sorry, don't have an "easy" button :)
  10. You might want to PM "Chads996" (I know he is on rennlist all the time) b/c he just posted a thread about the install he did himself. He did everything except the alignment.
  11. Do a search on this (both here and rennlist) since it has been discussed in great detail. YOu will get some great information that route. As for my $.02, I have had it installed on my 996CAB and the one thing EVERYBODY will tell you is this is a mod not to skimp on. Install is the key. I had to get my front GT3 bumper repainted becasue of a little road mishap in the rain recently and am currently in the process of deciding on which kit to get this time. It ranges from $495 for just the front GT3 bumper (full coverage) to $995 which does the hood, fenders, mirrors, rockers, and door edges. I think the $995 pakcage is a bit much so I haven't decided yet. My appt is next Thursday.
  12. Have you contacted Eli at Pelican? He is on this board and rennlist and recently did the headlight conversion on his 996. He has all that info.
  13. Thanks, the link works fine now. Cheers, Dell
  14. The car is still under warranty so I will just take it to get repaired. My guess was cam cover as well. Oh well, here goes another couple days that I will be without the car. ARRGGHHH.
  15. Here are two pics I took to visually explain the situation. I noticed a drop of oil on the floor of the garage but it was not in the typical RMS location. It was oil dripping just in front of the exhaust tip on the drivers side. Of course I am going to take it in but I am curious what in the world this could be? Also attached a pic of the passenger side shot of the same location and it shows a nice oil coating as well but no drip. Any thoughts?
  16. Thanks Loren for the link, I just contacted becker.
  17. Sounds like your microswitch is going out or is not connected properly (loose connection).
  18. I assume this will also work with the pre-02 996? Have any pointers where this can be purchased?
  19. Not sure about buying a used set of coilovers with 10K miles on them. I would do some research first and find out from bilstein what the life expecatncy on those are. Problem is you have no idea what use/abuse they saw. Personally, I would just get a new set if that is what you are after. But if all things check out I would think you could get them for about $500 or so. Remember, they are model and transmission specific so there is a compatibility issue that you may not have checked out (you sated you didn't know what he was trading).
  20. I had that very problem. PARK would illuminate, but no cab top function. It tunred out that the flaps that drop down on the side were not folding in properly and getting hung up this not letting the top operate properly. Visually watch and see if that is the case.
  21. The maintenance checklists will tell you everything you need to know.
  22. I was in the same boat when I did my center console. I had to order the retrofit kit to install the new hinge set. Not expensive at all. Totally worht it, much more sturdy.
  23. GreigM, care to post the pics here? They are not on the link you posted. Thanks!
  24. The "Current TSBs" section will have what you are looking for.
