  1. Now, having said all that remember..... the weakest link in most OEM sound sytems (believe me Porsche is not an exception but more like epitome of the rule) are speakers. Then the amp and finally components.

I concur... I worked for Harman International for a decade and was their speaker cone expert. I can attest that the Porsche OEM speakers are pretty weak. Some old Mark Levinson Lexus speakers I have are MUCH more impressive than the Porsche units. I would change speakers first and then later look at the amp and other components as Cassiebox recommends.

I've got the OEM DSP system and quite honestly I think this is pretty good. I was working at the Harman automotive OEM headquarters when they acquired Becker. There was a lot of excitement about obtaining their time delay/phase alignment technology that's present in the Porsche DSP system (the "Position" selection). This may not seem like a big deal, but I thoroughly believe that time delay DSP can make a HUGE difference in sound quality. I competed in IASCA and USAC sound quality competitions in '96 and '99. I did okay in '96 but only won one show. In '99 I won six shows, including the Indiana state championships. The difference - an Alpine unit I added to do time delay control. It's pretty sweet that the Porsche DSP system has the same kind of technology already pre-tuned for three positions in the car. I think I'm going to add another amp and some subs to my car and I'm upgrading the OEM speakers, but I'm very hesitant to pull any of the other electronics. If I do it will only be to replace them with my own EQ, time delay, and surround sound processors.

ME TOO I WILL HAVE SOME OF THAT ACTION
  2. Same exact problems here. P0733 and P0744 (DTC 73, 74) showing on OBDII scan.

What I have done so far:

2 full fluid changes (first one w/ new filter)

Swapped entire valve body and solenoid pack from 12k mile old trans

Cleared codes, rechecked; same codes came up.

Still same problem as OP. 1st and 2nd engage properly, third just slips until redline - won't engage AT ALL!!!

Anything else I should try/check before biting the bullet and having the rest of the other (12k mile) tip trans installed?

This is really discouraging as my car only has 52k on the odo. I don't drive it that hard, do I?

EDIT: just tried running it with the MAF disconnected - no change

i havent tried maf yet gonna try that see what happens it might still be your maf unplugging it should make the car run slower like the mf is broken hence if it still behaved the same with the maf unplugged try changing that first . the gear box place who are gonna recon my box demand that i pay for a new maf as well otherwise they will not warranty the box

  3. Hello folks,

My 99 996 is close to 80,000 miles... and 3k in the extended warranty left. When I reduce manually from 5th to 4th, I have let go of the accelerator a bit or the gear shift would be abrupt, not smooth. I "know" transmission issues are covered under the warranty... should I take it in or it might open a can of worms in a otherwise fine transmission? Maybe is normal in older cars and something not worth looking into?

    Hello.

Looking like you have a low ATF fluid, and if you didn't already had a Tiptronic maintenance,

I would suggest replacing ATF and filter.

    Good luck

DONT want to worry you could also be a faulty solonoid in the box not leeting you down shift smoothly any flashing leds? like the 4rth gear led and the D led etc ? can mean more issues with your box but filter and new gravity fed atf fluid is the first step

  4. its all ending in tears lol

now the indy rang me said he test drove the car and exactly same probs as I drove in with he also adds that the box makes a noise now a whine ? also he mentioned that although the oil was not very black it was very low

and some sort of burning activity must have happened inside my box as the plastic bit at the bottom of the pan had melted and also some wires had melted which he claims he fixed but still no good

he tells me the tranny has to come out and stripped for further diagnoses which will cost ?? he suggest replacing tranny with second hand unit want around 2000 mark for doin this dunno what to do

does any one know any good auto tip specialist engineering firms round the west mids area in the UK or where a good second hand tip box can be sourced for the 996

any advice would be appreciated as I am now gutted I am wondering if he fixed them wires properley ? same fault code comes up

  5. PHONED THE INDY TODAY to chase up whats going on with my 996 C4 tip he advised filter came in today and he has drained oil (he said it was not very black at all ) and has fitted new filter found bits pf plastic on the pan near the magnets ???

he also said he spotted some electrical wires that had got hot and melted the outer surface ?? he has bridgedit with new wires and said he will put back together and test the car in couple of hours to see if it goes in fifth gear and does not go back in to reduced drivin program .

fingers crossed he might have found the fault and i do not need a new tip but how the wires melted i dont know??

intresting to hear other peeps opinion..

as only one fault was showing up on fault code which is given early on in form po7034 i think ??

I am so excited that he might have fixed it cant wait .... will update later

    sorry fault code P0734

  7. THATS correct I dont drive the car and it only gets started to move out of the drive occasionally when I need the access otherwise it has not moved much in the last 3 to 4 moths so i guess it is normal then worried aboiut this bore liner issue as car is out of warranty and I guess it is a ticking time bomb could happen any day.

I guess their is more chance of it happening if the engine gets hot !!!

I wonder what is normal operating temp for these cars ???

I don't think how much you drive has anything to do with it. If is going to happen then it will happen.

The percentage of cars (compared to overall sales) is pretty small.

There are a lot of Boxsters out there will well over 100,000 miles and no engine failures.

sorry i am a silly newbie who posted this post in the wrong section

I have a 1999 996 C4 tip S cab and I worry over the bore liner prob sleepless nights lol after market warranties are not worth the paper they are written on when you have a claim they will default it some how ....

I know these cars have an issue you hear it oh so often the local indy has 10 bore liner engines sitting in his work shop

  9. hello everyone I have a question if you have a 996 C4 1999 Tiptronic S convertible is the computer stalk easy to fit as my car has not got this stalk and is it just a matter of plug and play or do you need to implant more loom to clocks and ecu etc ?

the same goes for heated seats if I have a pair of heated seats can I just plug them in and will the loom behind the dash accomodate the heated seat switch buttons or no ?

    regards

    Zak

  10. 1999 c4 cab gone to dealer to sort out tip issue but thats a whole new topic which is already posted .

however my water expansion tank seems fine only red colour antifreeze present but when you remove oil filler cap you find small amount of milky white stuff on the fill nozzle and behind the yellow oil filler cap is this normal condensation >??

or is it early signs of porous bore liner problem ??

your input would be appreciated car runs fine at the moment no over heating etc ....

mileage is 56000 with full OPC service history...post-31673-1212277736.jpg

  11. thanks everyone for all your input the information is sooo useful it is good to know so I can be prepared lol the indpendant dealers some times view customers like meal tickets lol

I will tell him to put fresh recomended porsche gear oil in the tranny along with new filter and try the car out like that if it still plays up might need to drain it again as mentioned in previous posts

dont really want to fork out for replacement tranny especially since the current tranny apart from going in reduced driving program works fine no noises or other tantrums etc

the indpendant dealer said he has ordered filter inwont be with him until 2nd june and then he will do the work and see if it resolves the issue fingers crossed

and the sun has come out today usually it is raining

btw with out sounding stupid what is A dealer with PIWIS can do a full flush.??/ is that the computer ro read the temps in the box as the fluids going in ??

  12. Sent you a pm with some info on it too.

    THANKS FOR THE

car has been recovered to porsche independant specialist so we will see what happens

I told the independant that first drain the tranny oil and replace the filter and new fresh oil in the tip box and we will take it from thier

he replied if he starts draining the tranny oil and it comes out black means my box is scrap and will need a rebuild???

    does that make sense ?

i will update when I get more info from him as to what is acyually wrong with my car

a big thankyou to evryone who has tried to help me out with advice much apprecieated.

  13. :( drove car again today round the block just to see if fault still there and yep car starts fine idles okay even get water coming out drop at a time from exaust

any way drove car round block 3 times third time the car started slipping by slipping i mean when you press the throttle the car revs up accordingly but no drive anyway a engine light has come on now so will call out local guy tommoz to give me some proper error codes and will let evryone know what they are

some one suggested a switch on the gearbox could be faulty ??

forgot to mention when car looses drive if i switch car off and on again hey presto drive comes back along with the cel

  15. Thanks for the info much appreciated dunno about keep driving as the car refuses to move after 10 miles just revs like thier is no clutch etc and no cel light comes on strange i assumed it should always come on when a fault is detected ?? will contact a after market porsche specialist tue will let everyone know what happens ..

hopefully it wont cost too much and my gearbox is okay

I didn't realise that the transmission loses drive completely - that doesn't sound good. The CEL wouldn't come on with a transmission fault anyway - only engine faults.

    Where are you located?

i am in birmingham the tranny losses drive and the car just revs out and tries to move slowly like the clutch has burnt out is thier any way checking gear oil level via dipstick or window etc ?

gonna get it looked at on friday 30th may see what happens just wanted to make sure i dont get ripped off etc

  16. Your tiptronic control module has gone into the Limited Driving Program due to an electrical or electronic fault. You need to get a diagnostic check done by an OPC or specialist to see what fault codes are stored.

Edit: BTW, it's safe to continue driving.

  17. :welcome:

There was no C4S in MY1999 (C4S started in MY02) - so perhaps your car is a C4?

    What are your fault code(s)?

hi thanks for the welcome strange when HPI the car it comes up as a 1999 C4 tiptronic S hence I assumed it was a C4S ? it is a convertible any way I dont know the fault code because the breakdown man did not tell me them all he told me was his computer when hooked up said "incorrect gear ratio 3 and 4" and symptoms are car loosing drive as if it had a clutch and it was slipping car revs perfectly but will not move when this problem occurs and since cel light was cleared by breakdown man by clearin the error code the car still hasthe same problem but no cel light comes on any more ???

I know the cel light is working because it comes on when ignition is switched on then goes out like it should.

/i think some one must have drained the gear oil as i dont know the history on the car came from auction ..

guess that what happens when you try to get a cheap 996 in the UK.. :D

  18. hi any help would be appreciated I aquired a 996 C4S Convertible and it has a transmission problem. when cold it drives fine for say about ten miles but the D led is flashing on the dash display along with the 4rth gear led they alternate in flashing as the car is driven. eventually the car gives symptoms of clutch slipping reving but no movement obvoisly their is no clutch as it is tiptronic the car is 1999 3.4 C4S cab any help would be good do you think car is low on gear oil ?

Cel light came on AA came out read the fault as gear 3 and 4 ratios incorrect what does this mean ? in laymans terms :)
