  1. Well the thinner bearing wont work... the inner shaft has a shoulder on it that the same thickness as the bearing.... Its so it secures the inner race of the bearing. It still makes the noise and I am starting to think its the water pump. When I spin the water pump by hand it doesnt make any noise, It doesnt seem to have much play in the shaft. I took some videos of the engine running with/ without the belt on. You should be able to click on the pic and the video will pop up

  2. OK... Well I took the air box out and ran the engine for a few mins..... I could feel the noise most when i put my finger on the bolt for the lowest idler pully. I took the belt off and NO noise. I turn all of the pullyes by and and they feel fine.

Are these bearings "serviceable"? I took both the idler pullyes off and they messure out ther same, one bearing says s-74 and the other says s-79 (i think). I went to a local bearing distributor and bought 2 for about $7 that have the same ID and OD as the factory bearings however the thickness is about 4mm thinner. The guy there seemed to belive that the bearings he sold me would definatly work and they have a 1 year warrant.

I can spin the OEM pullly in my hand and it doesnt seem to make any noises and feels smooth, so Im not 100% sure yet.

  3. Well my 99' 996 C2 has about 42k on it. when I first got it about 2 years ago it sounded like it had rattle in the muffler. Its worse now, it starting to sound like my old 914. I have been online searching into the motor noises..... and everything sounds like the intermediate shaft but mine sounds like its comming from the front of the engine (rear of the car) . So I am not sure if its this shaft or an acc pully. In a lot of the articals.....people are talking about removing some cover. Is this with the motor in? I have also seen a bunch of pics with bolts broke off, but all those pics are super close. Does this shaft stick out both ends of the engine? Do I have to pull the engine out to replace the bearing?

My climate control also started bleeding and on the DIY section, they have a link for just the LCD but its a bad link. Anyone got a new link?

  4. Welcome Superman and good luck with your 1999 996. On your #2 question mine had one of the wires on the back of the switch fall off. The wires are a little short. I just put it back on and pinched the connector with needle nose pliers.

I have had mine since December and only had the dealer run the Porsche tester on it to verify cell codes and program a new key. My goal has been to not have the dealer do anything I can do myself. I hope you can get through those CEL codes without them.

Which switch the dash or the column?, I reset the CEL and put about 400 miles on it with no light, I am hoping its where the car was sitting for 8 months or so, It came on within 20 mins of driving

  5. What weight oil are you using? I noticed mine seems to do it a lot less after using the oil on the Porsche recommended list. I use Syntec 5w- 40 as per one on the Porsche recommendation list. Before I changed it I think there was 15W- 50 in it. I would get the lifter chatter for a few seconds and it would dissappear, just leaving it sit for a few hours. Going to the 5W-40, I hardly notice it anymore.

I have no idea what weight of oil is in it, but the oil looks brand new on the stick.... I am going to call the dealer i got it from today and find out.

  6. Thank you guy very much.

When I apply the parking brake, the light never comes on.... I am going to guess the swith for the parking brake is just stuck.

or more likely the bulb is burnt out in the cluster.

The light comes on when I first turn the key on, I think it the 3rd one over from the left, it goes off when I start the car

Also whats the 1st light on the left, its pointing the rear hatch, it stays on untill the car moves?

  7. I just bought a 1999 996 today 41,000 miles

    XS623951-5sm.jpg

And it has a few minor thing done to it, and I have NO owners manual

    1) the heater/AC fan doesnt seem to blow very hard, I am assuming its coing to need a need cabin filter, I found the DIY artical already

    2) My interval wipper, i cant change the speed, the knob doesnt do anything.... I may need help on the diagnosis

    3) I have sevral questions concerning the auto spoiler, Mine seems to have a one touch up, but I have to hold it down to get it to come all the way down, "Is that normal?"

Once I have the spoiler up and I reach 50mph or 70mph it will go back down, "Is this Normal?"

4)The engine light came on and I got 3 codes (p0420, p1124, p1126), I am hoping they all related to just one part

5)Are the 1999 fog and headlights HID or hylogen?

6)If I have aftermarket 18" wheels should I run the air pressure staggard (front to rear) like porsche does with their OEM 18's?

    7) my dummy light for the "park" light doesnt come on when the brake is pulled though it comes on as soon as I start the car.

    8) where the clock is, when I just turn the key to on (not running). What the small digital gauge?
