  1. How long should I run it with the bleeder valve open?
  2. I don't think anything changed after the AOS, I've just been paying more attention to the gauge and it's gotten hotter out. Where is the bleeder valve? I am also thinking about doing the high speed fan switch mod to increase cooling when driving in traffic. Any thought on the pros/cons of that? It seems quite simple to do and I don't see any downside to the method described here http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/15470-high-speed-fan-relay-hackmod/
  3. I just drove my car again today and activated the OBC readings in the HVAC controls. Temp peaked at 104 for a minute or two but generally stayed around 102. Still not sure how to check for the operation of the fans but definitely want to check that. The water pump was done in the last two years so I'm not worried about that. The temp only spikes when I am in slow traffic and the temperature is in the mid 80s or higher outside. When driving at normal speeds it never goes over 100.
  4. A quick update, took the car to dinner with my wife last night, it was high 80s and humid outside but it was around dusk and there was no traffic. Needle barely moved to the right of the direct vertical position. Looks like my car hates traffic but I am wondering if this has to do with the low speed fans not working or at least not working properly.
  5. I'm going to clean out the radiator and if that does not help think about a lower temperature thermometer, is there anything else I should be considering?
  6. I know the oil is fine, will check coolant when the car cools down around lunch time. There is a tiny bit of debris near one of the radiators, I'll clean it out with my shop vac when I get home tonight. Is this dangerously hot?
  7. I just got the car back after getting the AOS replaced and noticed that it seems to be running a bit hotter than it was last month. To be fair it's also been about 10-15 degrees hotter than it was the last time I drove the car so I'm not sure if I am still within the norm or if I need to address an issue. Two pics of the temp gauge attached. I tried to connect my bluetooth OBDII scanner to my phone in order to get a more accurate temperature reading but it would not pair and I needed to go into the office. I'll try again at lunch.
  8. It seems fair, my question is really if it's worth having a shop do this or if I should just take off the intake and the TB and clean everything myself saving $145 to $150 since I would just need some rags and some TB cleaner.
  9. Just got the call from the Indy shop, they say AOS, also wanted another $155 for cleaning the throttlebody and intake hoses, that piece seems silly and like a ripoff. Any thoughts?
  10. The water pump was replaced not that long ago (about 1 year and somewhere between 10k and 14k miles) and there was no increase in temperature. Waiting to get their assessment on Monday to see what it is but had to drive out of the garage to get it onto the flatbed. Still lots of smoke but no whine when it started up again. Definitely hope that it's just the AOS. The IMSB, RMS, clutch, water pump, coolant flush, transmission oil and I think brake fluid were all changed in the last 18 months and 17k miles. Tires have 5k miles on them. PPI showed compression between 100.1 and 100.6 on all six cylinders. Zero oil consumption. Overall a very well maintained car, just hoping nothing else blows up in the next couple of years while I put about 5000-7000 miles a year on it.
  11. So I decided to take my 911 to work today since traffic is a lot lighter on Friday. Got about 12 miles into the 17 mile drive and started to notice a cloud of smoke behind me. Had to slow down and once I got below 3000 rpm it largely went away. Pulled off the highway and on the 1/3 mile drive between the highway and the the garage I noticed that there was a whine, kind of like a serpentine belt, when below 1500 rpm. Parked immediately. Called AAA and it took forever for the truck to come. Had to get the car out of the garage and it smoked again on startup but no whine. I'm hoping that this is just the AOS but am not sure. Any other ideas on what this might be?
  12. I recently picked up my first 911, a 2001 C2 with a somewhat tacky Agency Power muffler and the PVC pipe intake plenum mod. The car is a ton of fun to drive and splits commuting and weekend duties with my 2006 BMW 330 and replaces a lightly modified 1998 M3 4 door. The 911 is by far the best of the three cars and is a huge upgrade over the 2001 Boxster S I owned a few years back. My question is with the intake and exhaust bolt-ons is it worth spending $700 to $1,000 for a flash? Will I get back any of the low end lost thanks to the exhaust? Will there just be a bit more power up top above 4000? Any recommendations for a particular flash? APR, GIAC and Fabspeed seem to have good reputations but does anyone have experience with either one or both? Also is it worth getting a reusable drop in filter for the stock airbox or should I keep using disposable filters? I'll try to post some pictures tomorrow, I feel like I lucked out with most of the options on the car. It's Silver on Black with an Alcantara headliner, body color center console surround, e braker and center console. Manual seats. Premium audio with bluetooth aftermarket receiver. Very clean inside and out. Brand new Continental DWS no seas tires, cheap exahust, 18" turbo twist II wheels but which were unfortunately painted black on the spokes and silver on the lip creating a whitewall like effect. Clear turn signals. 3M film on the hood and fenders to reduce rock chips. Heated seats. 110k miles. When I took it in for the PPI my mechanic said no oil consumption at all and compression between 200 and 200.6 on all six cylinders. Suspension is 100% solid. No leaks anywhere. LM Engineering IMS bearing upgrade, RMS and clutch at 94k miles. New water pump. New tires. Maintenance was all up to date. While I don't like the tacky rims and exhaust the up to date maintenance and a price of $17,500 made me feel like I lucked out. It's a blast to drive and I'm looking forward to owning it for at least a few years.
  13. I just got my 01 Boxster S and it does not have the trip computer. I read somewhere that all Boxsters came with the actual electronics for the trip computer but that the stalk which activates it was optional. I have two questions. First of all does anyone know if there is a way to retrofit the stalk into an existing car which did not come with the option? The second question if if there is any way to get the external temperature to display without the stalk? Thanks for any and all help. -Phil
  14. I need new rotors for my 2001 Boxster S the most cost effective ones I have found are from Pelican Parts. Here is the link to the two sets available http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopca...BRKpad_pg3.htm# Does anyone know the difference between the Zimmerman rotors and the Genuine Porsche? Is it worth paying the extra $40 (not a significant sum of money but one that I would prefer to not needlessly waste) for the OEM replacement or are the Zimmerman parts of comparable or even better quality?
