  1. A friend of mine wanted to add seat heating to his 1998 Lexus LS400 to save his marriage. His previous LS had heating but he traded up....

I purchased at least three heated cushion sets off of Ebay before coming to the conclusion that the heating elements could not be removed from the cushions without damaging them. So I purchased add-in heating elements off of Ebay, installed them in the existing cushions, and saved his marriage.

For the 996, I do agree the lowers cannot likely be removed without damaging them. The uppers, however, can.

  2. I did this. my post on rennlist. The pictures are gone, I can send them to you if you like.

This information is based on my '01, I did this in late '02/early '03. Some things may have changed.

The pictures are gone, if you are interested, I can hook you up. The basic gist of it is:

If you want to use the stock controllers, you should use the sock elements.

The elements are not embedded in the foam. The heating element for the lower seat is sold as a stick on. It has to be cut in half for the two lower GT3 seat cushions. This is not hard. The upper element is sold attached to the seat cushion. It can be liberated with a hair dryer.

Contact me if you want more details.

BTW, these are GREAT on a late fall or early spring track day, when the windows must be down!

  3. Yes, you do have the wrong part. The cam position sensor is on the head itself (you are pointing at the valve cover), on top, almost directly above the part you are looking at. I'll try to dig up a picture when I get home this evening. Manwhile, anone else who wants to chime in (1999Porsche911) please feel free.

So is that part with the wire coming out of it the Cam actuator? I replaced the gasket around it (even though it still leaks a little, that picture was taken before I replaced the part)

    Loren... input??? :drive:

Yes, I believe that is the variocam actuator. Here is the cam position sensor:post-34-1161652233_thumb.jpg

  5. sometimes easier to say on drivers side or passenger side ;)

the one I need to replace is drivers side which is easy to get to, but what about taking it out? should I worry about that?

No, Bank 1 is on the driver's side, at the front of the engine, the end nearest the transmission. I have only seen it with the engine out of the car. If you have access to it, the only thing I can think of to mention is don't re-use the O-ring. I really don't think you can get at it with the engine in the car, though.

getting to the driver side one is easy! take out the rear fender liner and it is right there! Now the passenger side one is a PAIN! even the o-ring is a pain to get at!! :cursing:

Wow. How different is your car than mine? I have no frnder liner back there, just sheet metal. I can see the cam position sensor, or at least the things around it. No way I would be able to reach it. You are not confusing it with the actuator for the variocam, which is right there, are you?

  7. What problems are you having and what codes are you getting. Depending on the codes, you can also have a failed actuator on one bank and the sensor is reporting correctly. P1530 / P1531 and/or P1524 / P1539 would indicate such a malfuntion.

I'm not getting any codes. I am asking a question about what the sensor does, what the ECUs do with that information, and how the car would react with just one. I think your response and Loren's answer my question. Thanks.

  8. The trick I used was to add the GT3 third radiator and connect it to the engine cooling system. That does nothing for the transmission but can really drop temps for the engine during track events and running on hot days.

IMHO unless you are running some 24 hour (or even 12 hour) distance race you don't likely need any transmission cooling.

Your humble opinion is probably right, but they do put it on the GT3 for a reason. I already have the third radiator, thank you!

  9. Drove next to a relatively new 996 tonight coming back from the grocery store.  His headlights were on, and the left tail light was noticeably brighter than the right.  His fog lights were also on - not sure if that affects tail light brightness.

When I got home, both my tail lights were the same brightness, with and without fog lights on.  Might be worth checking if fog lights affect tail light brightness

Did he have his rear fog light on?
