  1. Appreciate all your input. After looking at photos & figures of other water pumps and taking a closer look at the photo I took (thanks for noticing the upper level detail), I will contact Sunset to buy a replacement pump. I was unaware that the elbow is part of the water or “coolant pump.” Any time estimate to R&R the pump? I am expecting 2-4 hours. My local dealer quoted me $670 for labor plus $330 for parts. Funny how the dealers seem to charge fairly simple repairs of this type to ~$1000 or so. These guys are experts and I figured the labor should be much less than the value they quoted me. So I will be replacing the water pump and gasket as well as the serpentine belt while I am at it. Anything else I should look at doing while I am there? Thanks, R.
  2. 2002 986S w/Tiptronic For a couple of days I noticed a few tablespoons of coolant fluid on the garage floor when I take off for the day. I gave the car a rest so as not to damage anything till I found time to take a look. Now there are barley a few drops after very long weekend. I looked underneath this evening and found the following shown in the photo. I don't have a floor jack so I could not get a real good view from beneath the pump. I tightened the hose clamp as well as the lower bolt shown with a drop on it. After a brief spin around the neighborhood I don't see any more leaks....yet. I took a photo to review later. Are those lower 2 bolts part of the water pump? Also, there is no unusual noises to indicate a water pump bearing failure, but I am no expert. What else can I do to check the pump to verify I need to replace it? One thing I noticed is that there is sometimes, once a week, white smoke upon start-up like that of an AOS type problem. But I replaced the AOS it a few months ago. Don't know if this leak is related and just mentioning it as an FYI. No oil in the coolant tank, and no unusual fluid on the oil dipstick. Please let me know what you see from the photo. Thanks!
  3. Just passing along what someone else told me before. You STILL need to replace the switch. You have only verified the problem to be switch related. This is the link I used to R&R the switch. Fairly easy to do. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...mp;p=14800& Sunset Porsche was asking ~$76 plus shipping/handling a year ago. The local dealer was asking $123. If you dare, you can attempt to open up the switch and scrape clean the dirty contacts. It worked for at least 2 of us. Mine still works after over 1 year. This is NOT for the faint of heart. Lots of patience needed here but it does work.http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=18801 Good luck.
  4. Edmunds.com provides a more realistic value. Pricing with your first mileage value is - Trade-in: $15,144; Private Party: $17,204; Dealer: $19,723 I would strongly encourage you to spend $300+ to get a pre-purchase inspection on any vehicle. Well worth it!
  5. Does the headlamp ever ignite? Usually if both sides flicker then it is most likely the headlight switch. That's how mine started. You can confirm this by pulling the switch out (foglights) and slamming it closed (firm but not too hard) with the palm of you hand. I did mine a few times. If the headlamp comes back on then it is your switch. You might want to take a look at the following topic. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=21315
  6. 986S / 2002 / Tiptronic / 98K miles I've got the car back a few days ago and have been mostly driving it early AM and late eves till today. After cleaning the hood area I noticed the passenger side does not fit snug and is slightly lifted up. As if someone closed the hood on some object and was forced closed and thus tweaked the hood in that area. I know my car, it was not there before and the dealer did replace my Fuel Sending unit. Yesterday and today I noticed white smoke at start up. Today it was quite noticeable and I have already replaced both the MAF sensor and the Air Oil Separator. So I plugged in the Durametric SW and found something different: Number of ignitions range 1 42 / 2954h (Previous reading was 38 / 1h) Range 2 was still zero as expected with a Tiptronic. Operating hours counter 2961 (Today 10/10/2009) I simply don't abuse my engine ESPECIALLY with 98K miles on it. I may rev the thing to 7K but I don't push it THAT hard. I would think the dealer would know this and would treat such an engine appropriately. Could the dealer have caused a problem for me? Should I be concerned about the engine? Two issues to deal with and I quite simply don't want these guys to touch the car. Unfortunately the Service Department is closed today. Maybe I am venting but I am sure I am not alone here.
  7. You have to remove the access panel located under the battery first. Once removed and still leaking, then the fuel odor will fill the inside cabin if the outside vents are open. I believe there may have been a hint of vapor entering the car but way too little to be noticeable. I just got the car back tonight and all is well !! I was told, by Walters Porsche in Riverside, CA that the problem was resolved after cleaning the contaminants found at the bottom of the fuel tank, as well as the fuel pump screen. They also flushed out the "rail". I assume that to be the fuel path? For higher mileage cars, as in my case, I might suggest you thoroughly clean out the tank before putting everything back together. So now I can go back to my planned DIY. Front brakes and rotors were just received from Sunset Porsche.
  8. The photo is not the actual photo however, circled in red, is the location of the small crack at the top of my Fuel Sending Unit. The sender is located under the battery. Remove the battery, then remove the access panel underneath it to gain access. See item 5 of the 2nd photo. I was told fuel filled the small well at the top of the sending unit.
  9. Is this thing on? So I ended up taking it to the dealer. There was a crack at the top of the sender and it had to be replaced. I saw it but did not have my camera to snap a photo. Bailed out my car after forking up the $$$. Accelerated on the freeway and the the throttle cut in and out. Took it back of course. The service shop does not work weekends. I was told some contaminants must be in the fuel lines.
  10. 2002 / 986S / Tiptronic / 98K miles I’ve tried to search this area but have not yet found what I need. A few days ago I noticed a fuel odor coming from the fuel filler area. After a drive I can smell fuel in that area and at the front passenger tire area. I’ve not seen any visible leakage from the exterior. There is no smell within the vehicle when the windows are closed. No CELs thrown and none pending per Duramentric SW in this area. When I got home yesterday, it was a little warm outside, and it seems the radiator fans were blowing some of the gas fumes under the front of the vehicle. So I can assume the problem is localized to that area. Can you provide me, in rank order, where to search for the source of the leak or where I might start? I was thinking something came loose from the fuel filler area. How do I gain access to the filler neck, assuming I start there? I have the Bentley manual but it seems pretty useless in that area. DIY anyone? As always, thanks for your help. R.
  11. I agree with Loren and have myself used the proper product. I had no hazing with the MAF Sensor Cleaner. Trust the experts here and use the correct product for the best results. If you are a interested in the differences of the CRC Products, their website offers product specifications. Both products (MAF Sensor Cleaner & the QD Contact cleaner) use different propellants. Most noticeable is that the MAF Sensor Cleaner has a much higher evaporation rate (9) than that of the QD Cleaner (>1).
  12. I've been following this post. Within 2 days you went from Sad to Glad! Glad to hear all is well for you and your car.
  13. While working on other repairs, I noticed the windows reset after removing and reconnecting one of the battery leads for say 30 seconds or so. You will need to move the windows to both the full up and full down position to reactivate/reset the one-touch up/down motion.
  14. I've thought about it but have not tried that yet. Great idea... traffic willing. No difference... I tried lowering & raising the spoiler several times at speed.
  15. I've thought about it but have not tried that yet. Great idea... traffic willing.
  16. Thanks, might be worth investigating. Right Rear had an off brand that was replaced due to a blow-out per the previous owner. I need to take a closer look at that rim. BTW: This being Spring Break week, local freeway traffic was non-existent. With a change of tires, on my way to work this AM I was able to hear, at freeway speeds,.... JUST the engine/exhaust! Previous tires were Fuzions. I cannot believe the difference.
  17. I replaced the tires today with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires. (Much less road noise btw) I've had a vibration to what appears to be passenger rear that I was hoping would go away as the previous tires were fairly worn. (It didn't) One of the items listed in my pre-purchase inspection, last year, was a rear trailing arm might need to be replaced. Rattles at low speeds. Any idea if this can be the cause? Wondering what else I can inspect?
  18. Did you recently purchase this vehicle? Something similar happened to me after I took purchased mine. After checking all the fuses and such I wanted to check voltages at the headlamp connector. I removed both headlamp assemblies and found both connectors had been disconnected! I have Litronic btw and it was clear that something had been disconnected after looking at the assembly. I later needed to replace the headlight switch to fix the flickering issue. Good luck!
  19. Just an update. Long story short... I drained some oil as I noticed stuttering reoccurred during acceleration while making a left hand turn. I was aware of a very slight overfill per the dipstick and I was thinking the AOS may be ingesting too much oil foam (or whatever). I am now 3 bars down (oil) after sitting overnight. Took the car for a spin w/o the MAF to burn any remaining oil and to clear the O2 sensors. (Blue smoke at start-up). I reset the MAF and life is good so far (<50 miles). After that, I let the car sit for a couple of days. I did not see any blue smoke out the exhaust upon start-up this morning. My trip into work this morning was uneventful (a good thing). I may provide you an update in a week or so. Thanks everyone for all your help!
  20. I would like to see some live data if possible. I gently strap my open laptop, facing me, with the passenger seat belt and run the Durametric cord up and over the steering wheel column. I click start/stop only when parked in my garage.
  21. How frustrating!! I take it your 02 sensors work perfectly? I think by now I would be seriously considering letting Porsche run a diagnostic and see what they think... I've not seen any CELs pointing to the O2 sensors. I have not driven the car long enough, after disconnecting/reconnecting the battery to reset the computer. There were no pending codes with it plugged in but, I assume that takes a few driving cycles. When this all started up, it took a few days to throw a CEL. The dealer is an option but not for a week or so. I am wondering what tests they might run. It would be nice if they can simply exercise everything and spit out the problem in just a few minutes. All I see are $$$ signs in their eyes. I appreciate everyone's help. I am hoping, when this gets resolved, that I will be able to help someone else.
  22. This IS my second MAF sensor from Sunset. I sent the first one back and am still out $$$ till Bosch refunds Sunset. BTW: I did see 2 spots and only for one brief spot at 2 very different time slots where the Hot Film MAF went to zero. Idle values of the Hot Film MAF seem kinda high (24-37 range at 600-800 RPM). Hot Film MAF is seen in the 200 range at less then 3000 RPM. I've no comparison data so I don't now if this is normal. I was up pretty late last night messing with this to no avail. Unplugged the MAF and there the car sits for yet another day...
  23. P0107 code has never reappeared. Must a have been a fluke.
