  1. I confess that I've just now become aware that the 2 lights on the PCM1 CD-rom of my MY2000 996 are both ON when the car is running, is this normal?? The sat nav seems to be working OK otherwise. When I switch the ignition off they go out. ?? Alex
  2. Thanks RFM, I was afraid the answer would be 'yes', I know nought about engines. So KevinMac I'm like you, wondering if there is a 'fix' that can be done as a precaution or do we just wait until the engine goes up in smoke? Alex
  3. Does this IMS failure afflict the tiptronic-equipped M96s as well? Alex
  4. Good deal, thanks Maurice. It is such a time-saver to know which part I need before calling/ordering. Take care, Alex
  5. I have started using the PET catalog and was wondering about the 'Remarks' section, I figured L is for left, R for right, etc. The most common one is the MY remark such as -01 or 02-. Does the hyphen on the left mean 'up to xx? and the hyphen on the right 'from xx on? Some have no hyphen. Am I correct? Thanks, Alex
  6. I wrote up a detailed Word file with instructions and pictures regarding the cigarette lighter R&R. 996_Lighter_removal.doc Alex PDF version 996_Lighter_removal.pdf
  7. The page you're missing (from the Carrera manual but I imagine it's the same):
  8. 70sixter & kbrandsma: Thanks for your suggestions. I did manage to get it off. :) Cheers, Alex
  9. Hello guys, I want to do Scouser's 'In-dash spoiler switch' modification to my MY2000 C2 Cabrio. I have a couple of questions though: • What's the best way to remove the blank switch (below) once I pry the switch tab off the dash? Does it snap off? I'm afraid to force it, there must be a trick to it someone knows... • In my car all the 'tip switches' on the left side are blanks so for the new switch to light I'll have to connect it to the other side, can I run the wires above the PCM unit to the covertible top switch? Will that work? Alex :renntech:
  10. kristian, www.colorplus.com can match the seat leather for repairs/touchups. Check out this thread: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...#092;color+plus I'm thinking of using their Surflex to dye the cracks in my driver's seat. Good luck! Alex
  11. This thread here shows how to remove the unit only, no instructions on faceplate removal though. Alex
  12. WeekendWonder, You might be able to contact the guy in this thread from 6speedonline.com. He had the same question a while back. Click here to read the thread. Good luck, Alex
  13. Thanks again, Loren. I was afraid it was bad news. The PCM1 is becoming the 8-track of the Porsche world... Alex
  14. Hello all, Can the 997 PCM be retrofitted into a MY00 996 with PCM1? It seems that the aftermarket solutions all involve a lot of custom work to look 'original'... I have been using my plug-in Garmin but the cigarette lighter adapter keeps popping out. The Porsche outlet is too shallow. Alex
  15. Big Squid: For the Wurth line of products try autogeek.net, they have a very quick turnaround. There is a very detailed DIY post here. Good luck! Alex
  16. Hello guys, I am considering upgrading the PCM1 system on my 2000 996 Cabrio. The Kenwood dnx7120 sounds really good as I like the Garmin GPS portable I currently have. It also has an iPod connection. My questions are: • What system does the MY 2000 PCM have? 2 din? • Has anyone installed the Kenwood dnx7120? Does it just pop right into the PCM slot? Any major issues? Let me know, Thanks, Alex
  17. I think it's the same book with different covers, they seem to have the same ISBN (9781845840969). I got one recently and highly recommend it. Alex
  18. Hello all. There is a tube that comes out of the top of the power steering/hydraulic fluid reservoir. Does it connect to anything else? Mine just points towards the engine. The arrow shows the location of this tube: Thank you in advance, Alex
  19. Guys, I am trying to clean the underside of my 2000 996. Because of the alloy engine I followed the recommendation to use "Simple Green" Aircraft cleaner, which is safe for aluminum. The problem is that it does NOT work very efficiently, requires lots of scrubbing... Have you guys used a stronger degreaser that is still safe for alloy engines? Thanks, Alex
  20. There is a excellent article about the rear drains here Check out Post#8 by smackboy1. Alex
  21. Hi Phillipj: Check out this post about convertible top care: Click here Also check the water drains and the front radiators which need cleaning, just do a search and you'll find several DIY articles. I have a 2000 996 cab as well. :) Alex
  22. Hello. I completed the drain project on my 2000 996 Cabrio and found the rear drains as noted in this pic posted by smackboy1: I removed the front wheel arch liners as well but could not find any obvious drains except for the open hole in the pic below: Question: is that where the water drain should be that comes from the front trunk around the battery and is missing a rubber part?? (# 4 in the diagram below) Thanks, Alex :renntech:
