    Thank you for your reply, I believe you are correct. I had never heard of this before, however, the fact that the last 8 digits were the same on both VIN's lessened my concern. Loren was able to provide me with good information as well. Regards, Brock

    Hello to all, Riddle me this... I went out to look at a 1986 Carrera coupe today, looks like a nice car guards red over black, straight coupe no sunroof approximately 100,000 km or 60,000 miles, nice clean interior etc. I look under the luggage compartment for the ID code and no code, so I take a photo of the VIN tag from inside the luggage compartment on the left side just ahead of the spare tire looking at it from the front. Then I take a few more photos of the plate from the drivers side door jamb. I take the car for a ride and tell the seller that I will be in touch, oh I forgot to mention that there was no owners manual in the glove box and the seller indicates he will check if his son knows where it is, (I heard that sometimes the ID code is placed in the manual). I just got on the site and using Scouser's VIN decoder noticed while I'm inputting the VIN that the photos I took show 2 different VIN's? The other interesting thing is that the last 8 characters of both VIN's are the same. Has anyone ever heard of this... any ideas or suggestions? Thanks, Brock

Thanks again Loren, the VIN I figured out from using the decoder last week, the number I'm refering to is the series of numbers followed by 3 letters (173-3841 USC) found at the very top of the label just above the VIN. On mine it appears to be next to Vehicle-Ident-No. while the VIN appears next to Type. Sorry if I wasn't clear in my earlier request. Regards, Brock.

  6. Hello all, I'm reading a book titled "Porsche 996 The Essential Companion" (ISBN 978-1-84584-096-9) if anyone is interested. Lots of valuable information on a number of topics pertaining to the 996. The topic I'm most interested in at this time is historical information regarding the make, model and year of my specific car. (2003 GT2) Under the luggage compartment is a "White Label", this label identifies the vehicle by a number of various alpha/numeric codes. Can anyone tell me how I may locate the information that deciphers these codes in order to make it a bit easier to understand? (I think the Da Vinci code was easier to crack) Although the book answers many of the code issues it does not address the Vehicle-Ident-No. Can anyone offer direction here? The big challenge is this...The "White Label" identifies my car as a 996 GT2 (996- 840), however,the engine code is listed as M9670. My research shows that the engine application codes for GT2 model years 2001, 2002 and 2003 should be M96/70S. (For model year 2004 and 2005 the engine code should read, M96/70SL for the increased power.) As I understand it using the M96/70 engine as the base PAG engineering created the even more powerful M96/70S engine developing 340kW (462hp) with 620Nm (4571lb-ft) of torque. Should the "White Label" be congruent with this or is there another explanation, or is there a more concerning problem with "identification label mismatch"? The car is a Canadian car with appropriate Country Code designation. Any help is appreciated, thanks, Brock.
  7. Thanks once again for all suggestions. As I mentioned I had the car in for a check-up on Friday and here is what the technician told me... the noise I'm hearing is normal due to some clutch system in the limited slip differential which upon driving off sounds like the front end is chuttering, he went on to say that the noise is quite common in GT2's, 3's as well as CGT's and that tracking the car or with heavy use the noise will eventually disappear suggesting that this would be a sign of wear. Another enthusiast who responded to my post on another site supported what the dealer tech told me indicating that he has the same issue with his car. FYI just in case anybody else is interested or has the same concern, regards brock.

  9. Thanks for your response, the sound does not appear at idle only as I'm pulling away from a stand still and while turning in either direction. Nothing with the clutch disengaged and only in first gear until the car straightens out then it's fine.I have owned a 1979 SC targa, a 1986 944 and a 2006 Carrera S.I have not had the codes read, can you elaborate on this for me?Regards, and again thanks for the assistance, Brock.
  10. Hello to all, I'm a new member and this is my first attempt at seeking help. I recently purchased my 2003 996 GT2, shortly after driving it away from the Porsche dealer I began to notice a strange sound eminating from what sounds like the front end, tires? It only happens when I pull away from a stop and as I'm turning, almost like I was driving over loose gravel. After a period of driving approximately 45 minutes to an hour the sound appears to disappear, only to return when the car cools. The dealer tech suggests it isn't serious or it wouldn't be intermittent, and suggests that it may correct itself. I have scheduled an appointment for next Friday to have it checked and I wouldn't mind going in somewhat informed on what it might be... any suggestions? Certainly appreciate any and all ideas, thanks in advance and look forward to further discussions, I have been very impressed with the level of technical knowledge expressed by many of you.
