  1. Changed to a new set of tires and my steering is no longer centered.. not sure how this can happen but figured a 4 wheel alignment will resolve it.

    The cost charged by the dealership is ridiculous so I went round hunting for a specialist to do it. One came across as a recommendation.

    He charges almost 3.5 times that of others and claims all kind of experience behind him. Amongst the things he claims, he said alignment is not just about camber, toe and caster. He said there're things like Akerman Angle (when steering is at full lock, 1 wheel is at a different angle than the other) and a whole lot of others stuff that I can't remember.

    I figured his machine only gives the standard camber/caster/toe readings so how is he going to figure out what the best Akerman Angle amongst others? Is this guy fOS or for real.

    He went on to say that after an alignment, the car is best left on the jack for an hour to let things 'settle' down before taking another measurement to verify the final specs....hmmm....

    Then again, some of the other things he said appears to be on target. Like using a pyrometer to measure the tire temp across the inner/outer surface to ensure proper camber.

  2. It has always been the case of the front pads having more dust (dirtier wheels) than the rears. Only makes sense as the front brakes does most of the work. After I changed pads (from Performance Friction to Porterfield R4S), it seemed to be the other way round. My front wheels would be clean after a week but the rear wheels would be coated with dust :(

    My car has only about 35k miles on it but is 7 years old. Does anyone reckon the rear caliper seals need servicing already? How do I check whether the pistons are stuck or working well?

  3. ... I remember a guy there with a white boxster that had the full body kit and explained the procedure. Once on the website you should be able to search the archives and find the write up. JES

    I've searched through the entire archive in PPPB but still can't seem to find it.

    Does anyone here has the rear AeroKit II spoiler installed? I'm looking for exact measurement from the bottom edge of the trunk to the start of the 'foot' of the spoiler. Basically, how far above from the edge of the trunk should I mount the spoiler.

    There's only about 1 car locally here with the rear spoiler installed but I forgot to take that measurement the last time I saw it in the car park :(

    I brought this matter up to Porsche Asia and they said it can be done and the TIS is valid. Got the car back today from the dealership and everything is running well again. Just thought I'll keep everyone in the loop.

  5. Just finish putting in the new engine, a 2003 Variocam Plus on a 2000S....

    Is the DME, O2 sensors and MAF everything I need? Thanks, Edwin.

    The display on post 2003 cars are different from the pre 03 ones. It's kinda like a dot matrix display. Also, the wiring is different so I guess you would pretty much need to swap out the current wiring harness and display if you were to use a new DME. Post 03 cars were using the tidier Controller Area Network (CAN) wiring.

  6. Ok, maybe I have the year wrong for the boxster. The issue with the 3.6 and the Cayman 3.4 engine is control of the Variocam plus in these engines. I believe they require the DME 7.8 which was introduced on the 2002 996. I assumed the 2002 Boxster also was updated to 7.8 but I guess it didn't happen til 2003.

    Hmmm.... so if I'm looking for an engine transplant for my 2000 S, the just about only option available would be the 996 3.4l? That is without replacing the entire electrical system that's needed to support the 996 3.6l or the Cayman 3.4l ones.

  7. Not into a pre-2002 car. You will have the same issues with electronics as you would with a 3.6 into the earlier cars. The later ones sure, but with a later car why not at least go with a 3.6. There really aren't any 'issues' with the 996 based 3.4

    Well, I was thinking that it may be a direct mount to the chassis of the Boxster instead of having to custom make the engine mounts and other stuff I've been reading.

    So.... to get them to do it, I need to sign a disclaimer??!! It's not a big deal for me and I think it should work all the same. Their also saying that my current MAF is 996 606 123 00 and not the 124 ones. Ain't that ancient!!

    Does anyone know otherwise? I intend to just go ahead anyway...

    Jeff from Sunset import sent me the TSB in pdf format. Great aftersales service from those guys. He could've just ignored my email but didn't.

  10. ...When the 2.7 and 3.2s first came out in 1999 it was 996 606 124 00. You could not put in the January 31st sensor in an older e-gas car unless the computer was reprogrammed per a Porsche bulletin issued April 18, 2000.

    986 606 125 00 has been replaced by 986 606 125 01, so something has been changed. I do not know what since there is no bulletin from Porsche.

    My car is a 2000 Boxster S and came with 124 00. It's throwing out error codes and I got a 125 01 since it's supposed to be more resistant to contamination. From what I've been reading, it requires an update to the DME bec of the diff voltage readings.

    Sent my car in today and the dealership told me it has to be a 124 00. 125 01 is just a wrong part. They're not aware of any DME updates for the 125 00 or 125 01. ****! Do you have any reference to a TSB for this?

  11. ...I want to get brake pads for TRACK ONLY, and plan to swap them in and out after each event, so don't care about friction coefficient when cold, squealing, dust, etc...

    Try Performance Friction Compound 97. Very good feel at the pedal and gentle on rotors. I had them on for my track days but swapped them out during normal road driving as the dust is simply terrible (as with all track pads). Check out their website at www.performancefriction.com

    ...the car did not like the giac ecu mode ran pretty rich and preformace was pretty bad.....

    Now, I'm glad at least another decent person dynoed his car after mods instead of relying on butt dyno. I've the same experience with GIAC last year and returned the ECU to them for a refund. All those so far that raved about GIAC have no dyno figures to show.

    To answer your earlier question, the Dansk Sports cat does not come with any pre-drilled holes for your 2nd O2 sensor. I've them on but thankfully, my car only has 1 set of O2 sensors :)

  13. According to Porsche technical installation guide :

    "Retrofitting is also possible for vehicles starting with model year ’97 (V) to ’02 (2). For these vehicles, a new rear lid must also be ordered"

    Mine is a 2000. Are the differences in the rear deck between a pre and post 2002 car that significant enough to warrant a new one? This will really addup to my cost :( I hope there's a way to get round this...

  14. Yes, I finally got everything up and running. Thanks again to Ed B, Navman, Toolpants, Loren and Richard Hamilton :)

    For those out there who's gonna do this, please ensure you get the following parts below that I've summurised :

    1) 1 x 999.652.972.40 Cruise Control Connector - For the cruise stalk unit

    2) 9 x 999.652.901.22 Pin Connector - For the cruise stalk unit to the DME/Fuse

    3) 1 x 000.979.010 (Volkswagen part #) - For the instrument cluster

    I have not been able to find the part number for just the pins used on a #10 wire, so you have to buy the wire to get the pins. I have found the part number for the pins used on the #9 wire, but they fit the new style cluster, and clubhead has the old style.

    Does this means that the VW part number given by Richard (000.979.010) will not work for me? :( I just dropped by VW to order them. Was told it comes in set of 5 but I couldn't care less about the extra 4 as I just wanted to get everything working. I was going to post the results when I get everything fixed up.

    You mentioned getting the #10 wire that comes with the pins. Do you know how I could get my hands on that?

    Do you or anyone else know what connector to use to slide the wire into pin 17 of the instrument panel black connector. The 999.652.901.22 specified by Navman doesn't seem to fit for the instrument cluster. I dismantled the instrument cluster only to encounter this today... ****!

    Would be ideal if it's another Porsche connector part that I can order from my dealership.

  17. I think you used the wrong connector if I read your message correctly and you used the white connector. Pin 17 in the white connector is used for a tiptronic transmission, if you have a tip. If you do not have a tip then there is no wire. Pin 17 in the white connector has nothing to do with cruise control.

    For a 2000 3.2 it is pin 17 in the black connector.

    Let me drop by the audio shop (where my wiring is done) to get this fixed.

    You could try connecting Instrument cluster plug one (blue) pin 16 to Motronic connector 4 pin 18. ...

    Got that but apparently, that is for the 2.7 according to ToolPants. Strange that the actual instrument cluster varies on both cars though. Appreciate the response nonetheless :)
