  1. Came to find out that my significant other lost the second key to the 1997 boxster.....

I am seeking advice on some ways to get a second key with just basic functionality as in opening the door lock and starting the car.

I checked with the local stealership, and was told ~$500 for key and integral FOB.

So what are some cheaper alternatives?

    Thanks, and best regards,

    J

The problem is a simple one, you need a key that the car's security system recognizes, which means using a PST II or PIWIS to

accomplish. The key is going to set you back over $100 alone, cutting it and coding the car to accept it is all labor.

Right, I understand this. Knowing this helps me how?

More specifically, where can I get a key other than dealership? And what details should I look for in securing a key?

Who can cut and program it besides a dealer? Indies?

    Thanks

  3. So, I am answering my own question in hopes that someone out there will find it useful.

Figuring the turn signal assembly was shot beyond repair, I found a recycled one on ebay for roughly 1/5th the cost of a new one from any of the online porsche parts places.

    I found this you-tube video particularly helpful:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hux78ZoPcAI

Two things are worth noting in the R&R of the turn stock.

    1) the first step of using a 30mm torx driver to remove the front airbag assembly is an exercise in patience. It is a very snug fit to insert the driver, and in my case, the bolts were not exactly centered at the end of the cylindrical opening in the back of the steering wheel. I had to spend 10-15 mins 'fishing' around with my torx driver to eventually seat it into the screw....very frustrating.

    2) the two plastic pieces that protroud from the face of the clock spring and that go through the steering wheel housing are *very* fragile. I was aware of this so I was very cautious when I pulled back the steering wheel but alas, one broke off (or was broken to begin with, I could not tell). In any case, I use some cyanoacrylate glue (aka crazy glue, or Loctite super glue) to reattach the piece, but...I could see the bond would not be strong enough to resist the sheer force when the steering wheel turned. I got a thin toothpick and with a hot glue gun, glued a 'splint' along the length of the plastic piece. I did the same to the other side. Reattached the clockspring and wheel and it worked fine. I figured I had nothing to lose by trying to glue the broken part, especially after a seach for the clock spring turned up a cost of $250....

I disassembled the old turn stock by drilling out the brass rivets. It turns out that a piece of plastic that moves into the switch detent had broken. No repair on the old part could be done - IMHO. Tis a shame....an expensive car such as this should have a turn stock that fails because a piece of plastic breaks...cheaply made, badly designed...

The R&R of the signal stalk took about 3 hrs which included regluing the plastic piece on the clockspring.

    Good luck.

  4. 1997 Boxster, 5 sp, silver, black interior, made in germany.

I need the turn signal mechanism - pushing up to signal a RH turn results in the stock moving a slight amount - blinker does not engage nor does it hold in place.

I want to install floor lights on driver and passenger side. I understand that this feature was optional? In any case, I'd like the p/n for the lamp holder/shell - I am going to install it myself. Since mostly all boxters have these lights, i am not to picky about getting the one for my 97....anything from 1997-2007 or later will probably work.

    Thanks

    John

  5. So I just took my boxster out of the garage for a drive and tried to signal a RH turn and the stalk would only move a little bit to the up posiiton and would not hold. The right signal light would not come on either. Left works fine.

I did some searching around on the forum and while I found a lot of discussion of how to replace, I didn't see anything about if it is possible to repair the existing unit. Is it possible???

Pros/cons about doing this are appreciated.

Also, if the unit is truly unrepairable, best souce of reasonably priced/cheap replacement part? (pelican?)

    Much thanks for any help!!

  6. John:

The most likely suspect is one of the two microswitches that are located in the latch receptacle in the windshield frame. Note that the two microswitches are part of one assembly, but each one can fail separately, and in a different manner because of the two different types of switches.

There are two microswitches in the latch receptacle assembly. There is one on the left side of the assembly (has a large plunger that juts out when the latch is open). That one controls the 4" window drop that occurs immediately when you pull down the latch to open the top. There is another one on the right side of the assembly, and that is the one that activates the convertible top double relay.

To gain access to the microswitch you have to remove the latch plate at the center of the windshield frame. Pop out the two little black plastic "eyes" by carefully prying them off with a very small flat blade screwdriver or borrow one of those "orange sticks" that women use on their fingernails to pry them out. Remove the small torx bolt that you will find under each one of the two eyes. Remove them and then pull down the latch plate carefully until you can see and access the wires for the switch and for the light. Unplug the wires and the latch plate will come off. You will find two fragile retaining clips that attach the switch to the underside of the latch plate. These are easy to break, so use a pair of small needle nose pliers to pull them off, very gently. You can reuse these if you are careful by squeezing the cross sections that are located at the center of the clips until they are flattened.

The assembly is part number 986.613.795.02 for your '97 and costs less than $40. Try Sunset Porsche under the "Special Offers" tab at the top of each page here or Suncoast or pelicanparts.com.

    Regards, Maurice.

thank you for the great detail. I'll disassemble the latch receptacle assembly and see what gives...Given that I have to push my finger well into the assembly, perhaps something is loose/got misaligned.

    BR,

    John

  7. Hello all...1997 Boxster, a garage granny at 27K....

Just discovered this today....with the top down, the side windows will go down, but will not go up when using the window switches. Quite inconvenient. Put the top up, windows work normally.

Put the top down, windows won't go up. Stick my finger in the recess where the roof latch connects, and press in quite far, now side windows will go up and down.

Looking at the schematic there are two switches inside that latch housing. I am assuming the switches need to be replaced????? True?

If so, any source of switches for a reasonable price?

Is this a tricky removal/replacement or is it fairly easy?

    Thanks for your insight.

  8. Hello, yet another lost radio code request.

Pulled unit out of my 97 boxster, Details:

    Becker CDR-210

    Model no: BE 2282

    S/n: T5003475

    Porsche p/n: 993.645.120.01

    Any help greatly appreciated....

    TY!

    -John

    Try 4736

Worked fine! ty!....It worked AFTER I realized that I need to hit the "up arrow" which is the Seek button, and NOT the round button marked with an S........I don't use the radio much...like the sound of the exhause system much better...lol

  9. Yet another lost radio code request:

1997 Boxster, 5 speed, USA car, built in Germany

    Radio: CR-210

Type: R2896 (or maybe R2876? could not read my handwriting...)

    S/N: T5003475

    Thank you!!!

    -John

    Try 4736

Unfortunately it did not work. I double checked the S/N, and it is T5003475

    I did some looking on the net last evening and found a 'decoder' that would provide other possible keys, and I tried: 4746, 4836, 5736, 4848, 5746, 5836, 5846, 4735, 7081, 7091, 7181, and 8081.

None of them worked either. Can you suggest any other possible keys? Or alternatives other than going to the dealership?

    thank you!

    -John

  10. Hi:

Like James, I am also struggling with a (yet another) top problem. I have three questions:

    1. Please explain how to put the top in 'service position'...I DON'T have my owners manual.

    2. I have the old style transmission cables for my convertible. The dealer(s) told me that the old style cables can be replaced directly with the new style cables. Is this true???? (i.e. the convertible transmissions do not have to be replaced...)

    A related question: Are the two cables the same, e.g. p/n986 561 717 03.

    3. I was told the convertible mechanism needs to be timed/aligned if I replaced the pushrods (I replaced one). How does one do the alignment?

    Thanks a lot!

    John

  11. Hi:

1997 Boxster with convertible top stuck in 'up' position. When it was put up, heard a snapping sound in convertible storage area. Replaced one the 'ball and socket push rods', the other had been replaced a while ago. Roof worked smoothly and aligned perfectly. This work was done about 2 months ago.

I need to open the convertible trunk 'lid' so I can begin to assess what has happened. Saw reference to moving top via 'service mode' but don't know how to do this. Can someone clarify this issue?

A side note, when I try to lower the roof, I hear a click sound in the rear, and the dash lights dim a bit, indicating that the drive motors are drawing some power but nothing is moving.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    -John
