  1. Thanks again. I took a look at the plastic and it is only broken on the end. I spoke to the service guys at Porsche and they think it may be the micro switch in the roof housing (apparently there is another one there). As that is outside of my technical skills, I'm going to brin it in and pay more than I should to have it fixed. I'll let you all know how it turns out.

Thanks again for all the help.

  2. Howdy Folks,

I have a 99 Cab with a malfunctioning top. Everything works fine except for the final lock (after which the windows should roll up). For some reason the clamp fails to lock. It will move into the final position make a "lock" sound, but then unlock and attempt to grab and lock again. It will continue to do this as long as I continue to press the close button.

I hope my explanation is understandable. Please let me know if you have any fixes.

    Thanks for all your help.

  3. Thanks Loren.

I'm having the body shop take it to an independent place on Tuesday. Since I have no confidence in BH Porsche service, they are going to test the alternator to make sure that is the problem. If it is, I'll probably order the part myself and give it to them to install.

Does anybody know anything about places like www.thepartsbin.com. They have a remanufactured bosche alternator for around $280 with a 12 month warranty. Am I better off going through Porsche?

  4. Hey all,

I thought I post this here too to see your thoughts.

I was unfortunately in a collision with pretty bad front end damage. The car has been in the shop approximately two months, though most of that is waiting for parts (or so they say). I was supposed to pick it up today, but the body shop called and said the car hasn't been starting for the past couple of days. They took it to the dealer and had the battery replaced to no avail. Dealer said it was the alternator and would be $850 to replace. Body shop says that the alternator issue was independent of the collision damage. I have a couple of questions:

    1) Is it possible that the alternator was damaged due to short (either caused by the collision or the body shop when they were repairing the car)?

    2) Does $850 seem ridiculous for the work? (Just found out that Beverly Hills Porsche is overcharging by at least $200) Downtown LA will do the work for aprox $625.

    3) Does this smell fishy?

I should also note that the body shop is an excellent reputable place. They have offered to do the alternator replacement for the cost of the part (roughly $275). I have also called my insurance company to ask them if it might be covered along with the other repairs.

Any input would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks

  5. Hey all,

I took a look at the archives, but didn't see a specific answer to my question. I finally got an Ipod and would like to hard wire it to the stock Porsche radio. I have an early build 99 cab, but the radio was replaced under warranty. The front of the deck says it is a model 220, but doesn't offer any more info on the type of radio. Is it a Becker? If so, is there a aux-in part that is made for it?

I tried to bring it in to a local car stereo shop, but they didn't seem to know what they were doing so I left.

    Thanks for your help

    Chad.

    99 Cab

  6. Howdy all,

Noticed the infamous coolant leak on my 99 Cab Carrera this past weekend on the driver's side exhaust pipe. Thought about purchasing the part and doing it myself, but also read (from this board) that this has been a long standing issue. So rather than spend the $230+ dollars on the part, I took it into the dealer to have them take a look. I also mentioned that while the car was out of warranty, the problem is well documented for these cars and I thought the repair/replacement should be done under warranty. They agreed to check with the regional rep for PCNA, but couldn't do so until today. Called this morning and they will cover it ($580+ for part and install).

Wanted to say thanks for the info on the board. It also probably helped that I have taken the car there since it was bought (oil changes included) and they replaced the engine on the car a couple of years back.

    Thanks again.

  7. Loren,

It's confirmed. I called another body shop and the window is not supposed to be stitched in. I was a little bit upset in that they say they fix these cars all the time. They obviously haven't done that many. Anyway, I will not be accepting the car back until the issue is resolved. I even found them the guy that does the install correctly. Thank you for all the help. I wish I had asked the question before they began the work. I'll let you all know how it goes.

  8. Loren,

Wondering if you have any information or can help me out on this. I have a 99 Cab and was rear ended about three weeks ago. Crushed the back and front bumpers and the roll bars deployed. The roll bars ended up warping the back plastic window and they agreed to replace the top (outmost layer of fabric and window). However, when they tried to order the part, they were told that the replacement no longer comes with a plastic window already installed (it used to be burnt in at the factory). Now, the fabric part is separate and the plastic window needs to be installed. The body work was excellent, but the window install is unsatisfactory. Aside from a visible stitch on the outside of the window, the install was poorly done. I'm just wondering if you know whether they are giving me accurate information. Is it true that Porsche no longer makes the top with the plastic window already installed (burned in w/o the stich)?

    Your help is greatly appreciated.
