  1. Yes, they were surprise to see an XM factory unit for a 911 since it was not offered for MY 2005, but they entered it in the PCM. So before they entered it in the system, my PCM read:

    Satellite Radio: Found: Yes

    Entered: No

After the dealer entered it in the PCM with the PWIS it reads:

    Satellite Radio: Found: Yes

    Entered: Yes

Even so, I can not access the Satellite radio unit.

    Thanks

  2. Is it possible to remove the third brake light without removing the panel? My third brake light has moisture inside the lens, I would like to clean it up.

    Thanks

Thanks a lot Loren, it is much appreciated! Just wanted to let you know that I saw your reply and am still working on it. There is something in the way of getting at the nuts on the underside... I think it's because this car had previous bodywork in this area (I'm the 2nd owner) and they didn't put it back together the way the factory had it. But I'm not giving up, just have to remove more than usual so I can obtain better access to the area to see what's blocking me! -Anthony
  3. If one was loose it's wise to check them all. Be sure to fit the socket deep into the bolt as the drive is easy to strip.

Thanks for the responses. I ordered the parts today from my dealer. They should arrive before the weekend. I will give it a try by going DIY.

I found it interesting as well to find a bolt loose to the point of falling. It does not seem to have caused any damage. I bought the car used, so no idea about any past work done in that area.

  4. While driving under normal conditions, I heard a noise coming from the right rear wheel. At first it sounded as if the tire had picked up a rock, but soon it turned into a louder sound as if something was hitting the inside of the fender well.

Upon inspection I found that one of drive shaft pan head screws (see picture) had come loose and was missing. As a result, the drive shaft retaining plate was held by only one screw instead of the two required. This caused the retainer plate to hit the body of the car thus producing the noise I heard.

The question: Is there any special instructions like torque requirements when re-installing the bolt and plate? The car was not driven much after the incident, but I would like to know if an alignment or other procedure are required after the installation of a new bolt and plate.

    Thanks

  5. How do you access the Sirus unit , does it replace the original AM/ FM tuner selection from the main PCM ? Is the device listed on the PCM harware menu when you press main and trip together ? We dont have this facility over here in the UK , but I'm very interested in the coding of the PCM to accept another MOST device. Thanks

Anybody on the question from Berty? How do you access the satellite tuner, through the CDC button maybe??

  6. Marco,

From your screen shots you have the initial release of PCM hardware (no phone features) and PCM software (04035). Your Bose Amp at one time must have been replaced since it has 17500 firmware (not 16400). You should be able to confirm this from your service and/or warranty records from Porsche NA.

Don't know what your VIN is but I suspect it's a rather low build number.

All that said you should be able to go to Version Level 3.0 without problems. At least I did once I reached the point you're at now.

    Arnie

Thanks for your post Arnie, I will be looking into the amp warning next.

    Marco

  7. The pwis is indeed similar to vag-com though the number of available DIY options / emulators is very limited and still quite expensive. To be honest the warning triangle makes no difference to the operation of the unit so the only time you are likely to need the PWIS unit , is to add on or activate devices not currently configured. Post the details of your SYSTEM and PCM software as well as what other modules are configured or send me a PM. I can confirm what updates are required to bring you up to software version 3.

Thanks for your help Berty. I'll be sure to post the other PCM information.

What do you think about this DIY alternative to the PWIS? http://www.durametric.com/

  8. Check the versions for PCM and SYSTEM too , the triangle next to the amplifier may indicate the amplifier has been replaced with a newer version. The only definitive way to know what updates are required is to check the software versions for the PCM and SYSTEM. If your unit is at level A it should only require the update to level B and a newer 2005 or later MAP DVD to reach software level 3. If you plan to update to level 3 is is essential that you have a 2005 or later MAP DVD available after the update as the 2004 maps are no longer compatable and cause overheating or lock ups of the PCM 2.1. The Dension product is compatable with earlier PCM 2.1 units running level A or "existing model " ie version 1 and version 2 software , as AP997S car had a dension installed before the update to level A I beleive.

    Thanks Berty.

I wil post those. I do have a question, Arnie mentioned the use of a PWIS to reset the warning icon. Is the PWIS similar to the VAG-COM used on VW/Audis?

The local dealer has not been very helpful or don't seem to have much knowledge of the upgrade process.

  9. Very interesting and definitively educational article. Thanks to all for this great information.

Recently I placed a call to NAV-TV inquiring about their Porsche compatible products (Satellite radio, Bluetooth, Ipod), and the tech support guy recommended that before trying any of them, to first update the PCM to SW 3.0

He said that it should be an easy process, and that a Porsche dealer should be able to do it in no time, and for free.

Well not so easy, I called my local Porsche dealer. The service advisor said that he was not familiar with it, and that he was going to call me back once he found out some information. This was about three weeks ago, and I have not heard back from him.

Looking at this article, I was able to check my SW version. My PCM SW version is at 1.0, it looks just like Arnie’s EXCEPT the amplifier software. Mine has a Red Triangle instead of a check mark. The triangle seems as a warning. The SW version for the Bose amp is 17500. Any ideas to be able to perform the upgrade??
