  1. im still in the process of picking a tire, boy what a lot to think about! ive narrowed down alot of choices. i am no longer conerned with "n" ratings, though i understand and appreciate peoples concerns for it. i am no longer interested in only OEM approved tires, there are so many other tires out there that are comparably capable. i do have the following concerns though: -what is more important, retaining the same rpm as stock, the same overall diameter as stock, or just that the overall diameter front and back is within a few percentage points? by this i mean, stock tires have an ~25" diameter, if i go to ~26" all around, will that throw things off? -i recall reading the owners manual that i shouldnt be running an r-compound tire without some oil system mods, to prevent starvation. would a tire with a wear rating below 200 UTQG be to sticky for the stock oiling system to continue to pump and lube? the MPS PS2 is listed at 220, im looking at a few tires that range from 140 (the hankook ventus rs-3) to 180 (kumho XS). i do autocross (infrequently 2-3 a year) and do open track days (2-3 a year). im a total novice, so im probably harder on my tires than i need to be, even if im not driving quickly. id like something that will be enjoyable on the track, at a reasonable cost that if i had to replace the rears every 1.5 years, i wouldnt be breaking the bank. -i have an unmodified (suspension wise) 2002 c4s, with 15mm spacers rear/7 mm spacers front. the previous owner of my car installed 245/35/18 MPS PS2's up front, with a 295/30/18 rear. i researched it, and most people suggested the widest tire possible on the fronts. so id like to stick by that. even with the wider tire, im still at ~25" diameter all around. in order to find tires my next set of tires, ive just been searching by size for 245/35/18, and then looking for a rear that i can accomodate. I can get a Kumho XS front in 245 wide, by is it going to be feasible to run the 315 wide rear on the stock 11" wheel with a 15mm spacer rub issues? to wide of a tire for an 11" wheel? tirerack specs suggest the tire can be mounted on anything up to an 11.5" wheel... -next choice would be kumho MX, but they really dont stack up at all compared to the others on my list. -any thoughts on the nitto invo's? -Im really liking the nitto nt-05. this is the tire i want. cheap, sticky, looks to be daily drive-able. i do truely daily drive my car, everywhere, in all conditions. they are a ~26" diameter tire. this refers again to my initial questions about overall diameter. would this work? thanks for the input- -also, i would like to eventually modify my suspension, not necessarily a massive drop (im not doing the kind that is more aesthetic than functional), but an engineered solution to stiffening it up, reducing body roll, and getting the wheels to stay on the ground... therefore there is again cause for concern with overall diameter. Thanks for the input and help! :thankyou:
  2. not to worried about aesthetics, more so with gearing. taller tire= taller gearing, worse acceleration and whatnot. more important to me is not damaging the awd system. AFAIK, tracks dont care what kind of tire you run, just that the tires are in proper condition. ill have to look into 235/305's, they'll probably fit the stock wheels, if not a bit rounded out. i havent chatted with anyone over at tirerack yet, planning on doing it today. thanks for the help!
  3. Hi all, im trying to locate a set a tires for my vehicle (2002 c4s, 6 speed). ive read a bunch of posts of various tire reviews, but havent run across any posts on what i am hoping to do. My right rear is showing chords (!!) and i have an open track day coming up on 5/29 so i need to get some tires in a hurry. i dont imagine i will pass tech with the current tires, nor would i want to chance it. let me put a few things out there: i am a complete novice at racing cars. ive been karting for the last two years, but this is my first track event with the porsche. i wont be driving it insanely hard, i just want to learn how the car reacts at speed. that said, i wont need a crazy sticky tire. my porsche is my only car, i daily drive it, so i need something with decent tread wear rating. i dont care to do ps2's. on my list are conti's, kumho spt, and the the bfgoodrich kdw2. my question is concerning the kdw2. it comes in a 295/35 instead of 295/30. they also make a 225/45, so i could potentially have a matched set there. if i upped the tire size all around, will this adversely effect the AWD system? damage to the drive train is my biggest concern right now. there are alot of tires in 295/35 that are interesting to me, the kumho MX included. any pointers would be appreciated. Best-
  4. Anyone? How about experence with the corteco brand? Anyone have any issues with those?
  5. which one Rein or Corteco? Rein rein engine mount or Corteco corteco engine mount I could really use an opinion/experience with the Rein, as im sure the Corteco (being the OEM supplier/OEE) isnt a terrible product... Thanks for the help! :renntech:
  6. in consideration of not having access to PST/PIWIS (and its not that big of a concern at that point, as i havent even been to one autocross with it yet) for switching to something as capable as SRF, if i do Motul RBF 600, will that also require an ABS/clutch bleed as well?
  7. Bringing a thread back from the dead... I will be doing a brake fluid change soon enough, using the DIY method that uses a Motive bleeder. i was planning on using Castrol SRF. but Loren, in consideration of what you said there, that Castrol SRF cant be mixed with other brake fluids, will this be a problem? seeing as the motive bleeder forces out the old fluid, will it be a problem to use Castrol SRF? or is there a non reactive fluid that needs to be pumped through first to essentially wash out the system?
  8. is there a problem using semi solid mounts in a 2002 c4s? what mounts are even available? i would suppose anything gt3/rs would fit, but not turbo items? instructions for this procedure said support the engine with a floor jack... need i add a 2x4 between the engine and the jack? where should the jack pad be centered on? i am guessing i ruptured a mount because i jacked the engine up from the rear jack point. any helpful hints and tricks to getting this done would be appreciated.
  9. any particular kind of grease that should be used? a white lithium, regular old axle grease? Thanks!
  10. there is a touch of a thud when shifting under certain conditions. it seems to me to be more of a smoothness with shifting issue caused by me, or so i thought initially. if it is in fact a failing motor mount, then that would explain it. shifting quickly and rev matching up shifts eliminates it, though it isn't as noticeable under downshifts regardless of rev match or not.
  11. ill clean up the area and check it out. if engine mount fluid is greenish in color, then this is definitely not engine mount fluid. unless of course, engine mount fluid can go bad and look like motor oil. ill do some more investigating. havent driven the car since this happened yesterday, ill keep note of any undue vibration or harshness.
  12. Hi all, as previously mentioned, i had an oil overfill situation. this has been corrected per Loren's advice by just draining via the oil filter a few times. however when i first jacked my car up, oil started pouring from somewhere near the header/cat pipe gasket on the drivers side. upon closer inspection, it turned out to be coming from a bolt. i cant, however, identify what this part is. please see the attached pictures. if you were laying under the car, looking up past the header above the precat 02 sensor, you would see this part. do i have a major issue? I'm hoping this is a part related to the AOS, though i havent seen the AOS yet (ordering serice manual so i can go through schematics more thoroughly....). please see the attached and let me know what you think. Thanks! link to photo: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/x5XpS...feat=directlink Cheers!
  13. I recently purchased a 2002 c4s 6 speed. i received the vehicle with apparently to much oil in it. sometimes on startup it belches a decent cloud of purply smoke, smelling of oil (mostly when its cold). as of late it hasnt had the smoke (ambient temps have been going up), im guessing a lot is getting burned off. i've had two instances where the vehicle smoked to the point where i thought i blew something up while driving; the first time was taking a steep downhill left, and accelerating out hard, im guessing oil was sucked in through the PCV due to lateral load, and again the same with an uphill highway entrance ramp that can be taken with some good speed. it cleared up right away when on the straight. the oil dip stick indicates oil is overfilled, but i cant find a correlation between how overfilled in volume, as compared to height above the max dot on the dip stick. either way, its overfilled. my vacuum pump finally came in, so ill have the oil cleared out to the proper level ASAP. what i want to know is, what kind of damage could this have caused? im guessing oil fumes will have gotten all over the intake tract, so the MAF may not be 100% accurate, injectors are probably dirty, as are the valves. alot of oil being burned could foul O2 plugs, cats. but presumably time will resolve these issues? i dont know... could i have put my car in serious danger? input is appreciated. Cheers-
  14. Hi all, my name is Vivek Sureddi, and i am the proud owner of a new to me 2002 C4s 6 speed . I am trying to locate the previous owner. i promise i have nothing to contend with over the vehicle, it was (so it seems) well taken care of, the paint is in good shape, just needs a detailing with the right set of products to get some swirling/webs out. the clutch doesnt slip, and the PPI done by Rusnak Porsche in Pasadena, CA came out pretty clean. 1 range 2 over rev (nothing to be concerned with was what i was told). i just want to know the history of my vehicle, chat with the owner about the maintenance thus far, just find out anything i can about her. some things that may ring a bell: the vehicle is lightly tinted it has a kenwood ddx6019 installed, with rear view camera stock turbo twists, no suspension work to my knowledge the owner was a PCA member (i will be posting this again on the PCA site) the member was a member of the El Caballero Golf Club, presumably in California. when i recieved the vehicle, it came with only 1 key, no service records, no navi cd, but thank goodness they tossed in the floor mats! i'd like to think i got a good deal on the car (purchased from a private used car dealer). if you have any information on who the owner maybe, please have him get in contact with me. i look forward to learning alot from you all, and i'll see you at the track/auto x's.
