  1. Ray shows how to replace the oil filter and oil. Then we did the brake fluid change - no pictures. But what about the clutch? Who want to go under 'there.' Just jack it up enough. Mark shows how to replace the air flow sensor. The sensor.
  2. Fremont. Not San Jose this time. Start a 10:00am. 37030 Post Street, Fremont 94536. Back to the future for me and some others. Just Jeff.
  3. Well, I could just be making this stuff up. My trivia question is. What is #18?
  4. The blank ovals are for a rotary switch to adjust the headlights. Something we never had in the US but you can see them on Euro cars. The round grill below the passenger side vent is for the a/c. Behind the grill is a small fan and a temp sensor for the interior temp. Jeff
  5. Ravi sent me some pictures of the alarm siren/tilt sensor we do not have in the US. This one is taken from the left side - hard to see as the a/c stuff is in the way. A UK Boxster owner sent me this one - no a/c. My car from the left side. Would have to mount the alarm/tilt on the other side of the battery,
  6. Sounds like (excuse the pun) another electrical project. The Boxster amp has 4 channels unless you have DSP (which comes with rear speakers) or Bose or a 2003. 996 has 6 since some of them also have rear speakers in the back next to those tiny things you call rear seats. When we install a rear speaker kit on a pre 2003 Boxster we hook the speakers up to the back of the radio head and there is not much volume. I bet he wants to hook up rear speakers to the 2 extra channels on a 996 amp. Sounds like an interesting project. Jeff
  7. I've only done it once so you can be the star on the video. This is from last year at Bruce's parking lot in Fremont - Gary's 1997 was the subject. It was an interesting project as his December 1996 build did not have the outside temperature sensor - so we put it in while the cover was off. Also replaced his defective horn. Bruce said we can use his place this Saturday. Room for lots of cars but no covered parking in case it rains on Saturday. Time to pray to the rain gods. Any local owners out there with covered parking for a few cars and uncovered parking for a few more cars? Then we do not have to worry about mother nature. Jeff
  8. Loren has it. You have a remanufactured transmission. Typically Porsche drops the last 2 numbers from the part number and replaces it with 2 letters. If the last letter ends in X then it is remanufactured. Porsche has a remanufactured parts list on their site but it is mostly for older models. Still waiting for them to come out with a power steering rack as mine is leaking from the seals. http://www2.us.porsche.com/english/usa/own...vices/parts.pdf
  9. I see you are in San Jose. If you need help removing the bumper cover let me know. I will like to film it for the DIYer DVD.
  10. Loren has a much better memory than me. So others do not get paranoid, the TSB is for just 36 manual transmission cars that may have had incorrect differential gears installed. All are Finland cars. The VINs are listed on the TSB. They are all MY98 which you can tell as there is a W before the U. The car is inspected to determine if in fact improper gears were installed. A recall notice was supposed to be sent out in June 1998. For general info any Porsche dealer can take your VIN and call a special number and a recording will say if there are any recalls for your car. The recall number is 298. For more general info any dealer can tell on the computer what warranty or recall work was done by any other dealer. Jeff
  11. I would see how the siren/sensor are mounted. A Boxster owner in the UK sent me pictures last year but it is hard to tell due to the angle. I know it is next to the battery on the passenger side on a RHD car. We cannot mount it like that on a LHD car as we have brake stuff in the way. But in looking at the list of parts in the retrofit kit it looks like the kit comes with a L and R bracket. Knowing Porsche, the kit will not have instructions. I would also like to see how the loom runs from the siren/tilt sensor into the firewall. From looking at the wiring diagrams I know the wires are hooked up to the alarm control unit, which is under the driver's seat on a LHD car. So I must run wires from the battery area to under my seat. On a RHD car do you know under which seat the alarm control unit is mounted? This is what it looks like. Thanks.
  12. It is listed for 2002 up, not the older cars. Left 986 803 982 01 H03. Right 986 803 983 03 H03.
  13. I checked the parts list and a UK C2 has the same battery tray we have in the US. That battery must be a few inches wider. I have removed my tray so I know what you are talking about. 3 holes are threaded for the bolt for the clamp. The standard battery uses the middle threaded hole. The 4th hole is a drain hole and that is why you cannot screw in the bolt. If the clamp will work with the 4th hole then just use a nut under the tray. There is a drain hole on the other side of the tray so water will still get out. I am thinking of buying the alarm siren/tilt sensor you have in the UK that mounts next to the battery. Perhaps you can sent me some pictures of how it is bolted down. Jeff
  14. I have a pair from my 1997. They are still black and have not turned white. I saved them when my bumper cover was replaced. I'll trade them for something. Jeff
  15. The electronic VDO instrument clusters do have some problems like anything that is electronic. I have not heard of a problem with the oil level gauge but there is always a first time. I have not been able to find a shop that repairs them as VDO does not sell parts. On US ebay there is always a used Boxster/996 cluster but I take it you need a metric one. The problem with ebay is you do not know if a used cluster is defective until you plug it into your car - so watch out. Any 1997-2000 cluster will work in your car, it does not have to be from a 1997.
  16. We have filmed all those things and much more. Some of it is already on the set of 3 DVDs and we will be putting together more DVDs from the tape which has been shot over the past few months. Jeff
  17. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=512 We still need to do this on Raman's 2003. The problem is, I have not been able to get Raman's car and a factory install car together at the same time. When Kirby and his factory installed changer car shows up Raman is not there. When Raman shows up with his parts Kirby's car is not there. Jeff
  18. I do not know anything about the 993 cab. I did look at the parts diagram for your top and it is very much like a Boxster. We have a single electric drive motor for both cables. You have a separate motor for each cable. You have a left and right transmission like we do. The motors drives the top transmissions via the cables just like our cars. I have no idea if your problem is due to the cables. On our cars it is easy to tell as one side moves and the other side does not, and it would be unusual for both cables to fail at the same time. Your cables are side specific. The right is 993 561 922 02 and the left is 993 561 921 02. The 02 at the end of the part numbers indicate there have been changes to the cables. Double check with your parts department as Porsche likes to change part numbers. Have no idea where you could buy the cables outside of a Porsche dealer. Jeff
  19. There are many ways to do the same thing. If the result is the same then it does not matter. We have filmed several B&M installs and also on Saturday the Porsche short shift for the DVDs. Both are, for all practical purposes, identical. The instructions have nothing to do with this product. After about 30 installs you learn how to improve and not be tied down to any instructions. Jeff
  20. With enough money you can do anything to a car. But you cannot buy the cupholders that came out in 2002 and just put them in your car. I call this the 3rd style. Not only are several parts different but the air duct will not allow it. This is a picture of the 2003 C4S we took apart on Saturday. You cannot put in the 2nd style cupholders - the 2 thing that just popped straight out as you have DSP and there is no room. You are therefore left with the original side air vent style (1st style) that started in the 1997 Boxster. Jeff
  21. Sorry, I looked up 55. 56 is listed as instrument cluster activation. The fault is due to the "reduced driver program" whatever that is. There has to be a signal for each of the 5 gears and they test for the signal with an oscilloscope. Then the manual says there is a switch that controls the reversing lights and disables the starter when the transmission is in gear. This switch sends out the signal and if the signal is faulty then the reduced driving program is activated. Sounds like this is why your tip shift lights are flashing. Can't your dealer figure this out?
  22. Only a dealer can fugure out something like this, and it is way over my head. I can tell you what the shop manual says. 22 is because there is a fault code in the DME and the fault needs to be fixed. 55 is the vehicles speed signal that comes from the ABS/TC unit and that needs to be fixed.
  23. Boxster owners have given good reviews of Raggtop and apparently you do not have to worry about over spray. Jeff http://www.raggtopp.com/raggtopp/default.asp
  24. Looking at the wiring diagrams is like Chinese to me. You or your shop are going to have to compare the lighting diagrams. I know it can be done since I have seen pictures of Boxsters with the front converted with the turbo bumper cover, fenders, and 996 Bi-Xenons. A local Boxster owner, Danny, has done this conversion except he used the normal 996 headlights. Perhaps he will give you a start if he sees this. Danny's car.
