  1. The PCM message is typical of what happens when there is a break in the MOST loop. The 'System Error, Amplifier, CD Player, Nav System, Phone not available' messages are all from devices connected by this fibre-optic loop. Hence you can see the software versions of the devices in the head unit, but none of the external devices.

Just a thought. Can you eject the CD changer cartridge? I saw one last week where the internal fuse in the CDC had blown, and it had all the PCM error messages the same as yours.

Also, there is a possibility that the failed phone update has caused the PCM unit to lose its coding. I have seen this happen before too.

I don't think either of these would explain the PSM/PASM error messages though. As has been suggested, a diagnostic check is the starting point for troubleshooting problems like this.

  2. As Loren says, If you disconnect the MAF you may get a fault code stored, but on a UK car you probably won't get a CEL, as the DME is programmed differently for CEL activation compared to US cars. You may well get the ABS/PSM light, as the DME will be sending implausible signals to the PSM controller.

  3. If you have PCM 2.1 (the DVD-based system) there is an option for coding a backup camera in the PCM settings. On a system without a TV tuner, the camera plugs in to the PCM unit. If it has TV, then it plugs into the TV module. The connector in the PCM is a Fakra connector, so you would need a cable adapter to attach the RCA plug on an aftermarket camera.

I've never done this, but I can't see why it can't be done. It is a popular retrofit on Mercedes which use a very similar system. If you look on eBay, you will find adapter leads for this. (Search Worldwide for fakra rca mercedes). I can't get your link to work, but maybe consider a wireless camera to make the install easier.

  4. It is the microswitch in the door lock which senses that the door lock has reached the unlock position which is causing the problem. (Unlock not reached). The door is unlocked, but the system hasn't received the signal - hence the double-beep.

It doesn't say which door, but you might be able to determine which by looking at the input signals. See if you can see the "locked" switch on each door when you lock and unlock them.

  5. Did you attach to the Comfort CAN or the Drive CAN? (Two separate CAN buses, but perhaps you already know that).

If you can get it to work, I would be very interested to see what data you can read, particularly if you can display oil temperature and pressure.

  6. DME5.2.2 has a single connector with 88 pins. DME7.2 has 5 separate plugs with a total of 134 pins. The difference would be obvious.

The alarm might not stop the engine cranking, but if the DME can't communicate with the Tiptronic controller then it won't crank.

Kare - I would give it a miss, unless you have the ability to re-code both units, and the IPAS codes for them.

  7. 534 and 535 are different radio remote frequencies. If you are using a matched set, I can't see why it wouldn't work. The fuel map is different for manual/tiptronic though. Unless you get the IPAS codes with the donor set, you won't be able to get them recoded to suit your car. The alarm module is also coded differently for 986/996. You can change the settings, but again you need the IPAS codes.

  8. The immobiliser uses the diagnostic line (W-line iirc) to transmit the immobiliser code to the DME. If you have the wiring diagrams, you will be able to identify which wire it is. On a 996 there is a plug and socket in the rear footwell that this connection runs through. I had a case where the plug and socket pins were corroded, and it gave exactly the symptoms you describe.

If the 986 has a similar connector I would check it, and even if not, I would check the diagnosis line between the immobiliser (alarm) unit and the DME.
