Like 1999Porsche911 says, check the switch on the clutch pedal is working. Cruise won't set if the switch is operating. The switches have a habit of moving in the mounting bracket, and the system could think the pedal is depressed when it is not.

I wonder if the code is different for Canadian cars, as I think they have a different cluster part number. Has anyone in Canada any experience of this?

You still have to get the power supply from fuse B7 to the stalk, but there are no connections to the DME at all.

Just a quick update - The 2003/2004 OBC and cruise retrofit WORKS as detailed in post #47 above. You DO have to code the cluster and DME to "with cruise control".

A '98 2.5 is DME version 5.2.2 and does not have e-gas. I think it was introduced on the 2.7 cars with DME 7.2.

I had EXACTLY that problem. It turned out to be a faulty switch in the drivers door handle assembly. You can lock it by using the emergency locking procedure - described in the manual.
The fault should show up on a PST2 test. If you are anywhere near me in Maidenhead, PM me as I can help you with that. (Just noticed the Solihull bit - Doh!!)

The screen shots were taken from a PST2.
I used to have an EZ-Scan 5000 which didn't display the faults, but they were there when you read the fault memory with the PST2. I'm not sure whether other scan tools or code readers would show them.

BUT: if a/c off, not set to "auto", "MANUEL" appears in fan speed window. I assume this means "manual" in english. Dealer says this is normal and the way it is, period. Tech did full system resetto no avail. Is this true and the way it is supposed to be? Car is US spec and was sold new in Denver. A/c sytstem works fine. Not a big deal, but it justs looks odd. Any help appreciated as it is much cheaper to fix now vs. later.
I think you'll find this is normal - every one I have seen has been the same.

You will find that with RoW cars (like mine) the CEL is NOT triggered for certain emissions-related faults. P1123 and 1125, for example, do not show the CEL on UK cars, but they do on US cars. (Ask me how I know).
Yeah, the European flash ignores many of the sensors (as far as emission faults are concerned), where here in the US, we have all the bells and whistles. However, the US chips can be reflashed with the European program if you don't mind not being able to pass emission testing and can find someone willing to break federal law.
I had P1123 and P1125 for quite a while, and since I switched my MAF it hasn't re-occurred. The fault was stored in the fault memory of the DME, and it showed the number of occurrences. You could read the faults with a PST2, but they did not show up on a scan tool. Because the "fault" was intermittent (it showed as something like 10 events per month) it wouldn't fail an annual UK emissions test. I suspect that Porsche consider that such faults would show up on a service visit, and could be rectified at that time.
Mathew - where are you located? - you didn't say if it was a US or RoW car.

I would try to find an independent Porsche workshop who are capable of rebuilding your engine. There is a company in England who rebuild cylinder blocks - http://www.perfectbore.com - they also do big bore conversions. It has got to be cheaper to rebuild it than replace it. 82,000km isn't that much (mine has 110,000) so it would be a shame to scrap most of the internals for the sake of a damaged liner. Someone on the PCGB forum recently upgraded his early 996 which had 125,000 miles on the clock and was still going strong when he sold it.

I've done it on my 98 Tip, and my brother's 99 C4 Tip - no problem.
If we order the connector from Porsche in the UK it comes in a BMW bag! Be careful, because the stalk plug can easily go into the connector the wrong way round.

So, no one has tried fitting the OEM Cruise control on the 996? I have seen a similar topic on the 986, so i might try that.

It LOOKS really easy to connect cruise to a 2002 C4, but I don't know anyone who has done it (yet). There are only 4 wires to connect:
Plug C (Grey) on the Instrument Cluster Pin 17 - Stalk Connector Pin 1
Plug C (Grey) on the Instrument Cluster Pin 4 - Stalk Connector Pin 3
Plug C (Grey) on the Instrument Cluster Pin 1 - Stalk Connector Pin 4
Fuse B7 - Stalk Connector Pin 2
You would also need to get the Instrument Cluster and the DME coded with a PST2
Parts-wise, you would need:
1 x 996 613 219 10 EWC - 4 column control stalk
1 x 999 652 972 40 connector
4 x VW Part No. 000.979.009 Connector wires
1 x Connector for fuse B7
Like I said, I don't know if anyone has done it, but I would put money on it that it works. If you want the wiring diagram, PM me with your email address and I'll send you a copy.

Some good news for you 2001-2002 Boxster owners!
To do the cruise retrofit follow EdB's instructions with the exception of the wire between the DME and Instrument Cluster (for the cruise light). This wire is not required. The coding on the DME AND the Instrument Cluster needs to be changed to 'with Cruise Control'.

Could be the anti-roll bar drop link - they are notorious for the joints wearing. I had this problem on the front of mine.

I think the fact is that the non-expert can get the tiptronic car from 0-60 in the specified time every time, no problem - you just have to bury the loud pedal. Manuals are generally quoted as being faster 0-60, but that's in the hands of an experienced test driver (and with no sympathy for the clutch). Of course, I own a tip......... so I'm biased.
Interesting about the new TT. Maybe there are less gearchanges with the tip.

I totally agree - first step is a good 4-wheel alignment check. If it is off, the correct setup will transform the car. I'd reckon it is worth having this done once every couple of years. Small changes, particularly to toe and camber, can make big differences to how the car feels.

2002 Boxster S (UK RHD)
The wiring diagram for 2002 does not show a wire between the DME and the Instrument Cluster. Do you know if the light will work without it? The three other connections are shown between the stalk and DME (for set, resume, and off). The connection D18 on the DME (which would normally go to the Cluster indicator light) is assigned to "Relay Elec. Fuel Pump Term. 85".
I'd appreciate the benefit of your experience on this.

I'm not being lazy, but I have been searching for half an hour. I recall seeing some pictures and instructions for fitting the outside air temperature sensor behind the front PU on an early model Boxster without aircon. Can anybody point me in the right direction.

Now, about the clutch and brake interlocks...do they need additional mods to function like factory, or is that performed through the DME? Can you help me with that? Thanks.
On all the cars I have seen the clutch switch is already in place and wired up. The brake disengage function comes from the brake light circuit.

Did you do the cruise retrofit as well? It would be interesting to know if the wiring was the same as it would normally be for a 2003 Boxster (ie only connected to the cluster).
