TP is absolutely right, of course. I didn't read carefully enough. The black plug is plug 3, and you need to connect to pin 17 on a 3.2.

You could try connecting Instrument cluster plug one (blue) pin 16 to Motronic connector 4 pin 18. That's how its connected on a 996 and it looks like a Boxster 2.7 is connected that way on the wiring diagram.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'gravel guards' as it isn't a term we use in the UK. We have things we call 'mud flaps' which I believe are called 'spashguards' in the US. Anyway, these are what I have fitted to my car:
I think they are quite unobtrusive on mine, but would be more obvious on a light colour car.
They came from Mid-America Motor Works (www.mamotorworks.com).

I think I'd be tempted to have a cylinder leakage test done. At least it would check the worst case scenario of worn rings, and maybe valve guides. If it is burning that amount of oil there would seem to be something serious going on. You could also try a pressure check on the cooling system, as it might show a head gasket leak. Any oil in the water?

I just had the same problem on my brother's 2000 C4. See the attached. The button is on the underside.

Design 911 in the UK used to do a paddle shift steering wheel for tiptronics, but I can't see it listed on their web site now.

Being New Year's Eve, I just "renewed" my membership with a contribution.

Look at the options sticker under the hood, or in the service manual. If it shows IXLF then you have a PSE.

I assume yours is an early car with DME5.2.2 (non-eGas), as the P1129 code is only listed for this DME version. The OBD2 manual (and the OBD2 code list here on the forum - A GOOD REASON FOR CONTRIBUTING) shows it as:

Oxygen Sensing Adaptation Area 2 (Cylinders 4 - 6) - Lean Threshold
There is a reference in this section of the manual which says "If DTC P0445 (EVAP canister purge valve - short to ground) is stored in the memory, correct this fault first. An open EVAP canister purge valve can lead to the lean threshold being reached." I am not sure if opening the gas cap could have released a sticking purge valve, but I suppose it is a possibility.

Get in and turn the ignition on - that will kill the alarm.
If I leave mine locked for 5 days or more (after locking with the remote), the alarm ALWAYS sounds as soon as I unlock it with the key. Fortunately it is a rarity for me to leave it that long, but it is d*mned annoying when it does go off, and I haven't figured a way around it. Maybe I should try locking it with the key.

On '03 cars the cruise control stalk connects directly to the instrument cluster and not to the DME and it looks a much simpler job. There is a coding option in the cluster for enabling cruise, and there is also an option in the DME to enable, although I don't know if both would need to be activated. I don't know anyone who has done it on an '03 but on paper it looks like a piece of cake (famous last words!)
Just a point of interest - Ed B's instructions above also apply for 996's fitted with DME7.2.

I changed my lighter socket at the weekend as I had the same problem. It was about £6.00 for the whole thing - socket and element. It was a bit fiddly to change, but why muck about bending the tabs for such a small amount? They are obviously bent to a certain dimension, and how would you know if you got it wrong? Probably when it doesn't eject, and something gets a bit too hot.

Some while ago I stumbled across this article, but only just got round to trying it today: http://www.audiworld.com/tech/int6.shtml
It shows how to use the aircon diagnostics in the control unit which was manufactured by Audi. The diagnostics part isn't a great deal of use, but one useful tip is how to change the aircon display from °C to °F, and vice-versa. To quote the article:
Changing Degree Temperature Display
Press and hold the recirculation button. Then press the temperature up ("+") button to
switch between degrees Celsius & Fahrenheit on the Climate Control.
Why this isn't in the owners manual, I have no idea!

I have one that (I think) covers 1997 models. Trouble is, it's 47Mb, so it would be difficult to post here, and I don't have anywhere to host a file of this size for you to download. If you send me a PM maybe we can work something out to cover the cost of postage (from the UK) if I burn it to a CD.

I have the AutoXray EZ-Scan 5000. A bit pricey at $380, but it is excellent. You can download the data to a PC and print out graphs, etc. It is CAN compliant too.
I think the Actron CP9135 is just a code reader and is $110 at Midway Auto Supply. The CP9145 scans live data, and is about $199 at Midway.

That being said, the stock halogen lenses are not designed for the HID light, as stated earlier, the light dispersion and cutoff aren't going to be ideal. You'll have a lot of stray light, there are some kits that have the bulbs focal length adjusted, so that will help minimize it. So although you will increase the quantity of the light, the quality of the light you'll get won't be significally better.
I think I have found that out. The light I am getting covers a wider area close to the car, but the distance vision isn't much better than standard. The 'cut-off' isn't as sharp as it used to be, either. The HID bulbs are 55mm long (base to tip), and the standard H7 halogen bulbs are 42mm. I think it might be that the HID bulbs are too far forward of the focal point of the lens, and are causing the beam to be out of focus. Has anyone else had this expreience?

The new liner conversions in the Autofarm rebuilds are made by Perfect Bore. Details at: http://www.perfectbore.com/watercooled.htm . It's a nice idea to go to 3.8 litres, bur when you start adding up the price of the parts it's an expensive exercise.

Thanks Mike - yes, they are aftermarket. I'm not too concerned about the look of the lights, just the quality (and quantity) of light. I realise that they won't be as good as the Porsche Litronic kit, but they must be significantly better than halogens. I've heard lots of good things about these kits (hid-online.com) from 993 owners on UK forums, and can't recall any comments about lens burnout. Can you point me in the direction of burnout issues, as I can't find any here?

Hi guys. This is my first post on this website and hope its not going to be the last one. I am just wondering where about can I order original Litronics headlamps for Boxster 986 and how much is the installation for it in the UK?
With the clocks about to change, and the evenings getting dark so early, I have been thinking about doing this myself. In my research, I spoke to Tech9 who retrofit a kit which is about 950GBP plus fitting to give 'close to original' litronics with level sensors, etc. I am going to go for a kit from www.hid-online.com which is 335GBP and do it myself. A cheaper option was www.hids4u.co.uk at £225, but I hate using companies that don't put their address on the web site, and they didn't pick up the phone on the three occasions I called them.

I looked at the wiring diagrams and it looks like a piece of cake to wire it up on the 02 and later cars. The cruise controls are in the instrument cluster, unlike the earlier cars that are controlled by the DME. Therefore it would appear that you could just fit the stalk and it would be a simple job to wire it into the cluster. The reason for asking is that a friend of mine is looking to buy a 2002 car, but really wants cruise. If he finds the right car without cruise, he wants to try retrofitting.

The wires which connect to the instrument cluster plugs are VW Part Number 000.979.010
I don't know the Porsche number, but the VW ones are a perfect fit.
