  1. Thanks for all the replies I decided to order the seat covers from Gahh (link to the website above). They are 100% leather vs the partial leather so we'll see. I wanted to stay with the original look instead of going aftermarket. I have bit the bullet and am crossing my fingers for the outcome and will post the result. If I ordered the covers myself they would have been 1500. The installer I have chosen can buy them for less and he is charging me 1350 plus a somewhat steep 300 for re & re. I am alittle torn because I love DIY'ing my 996, but it is christmas and I did not have ready instructions to re & re these seat covers. Anyways I'll post the result Rick
  2. Thanks for the replies I believe my seat cushions are fine Dharn so I can greatfully decline your foam. Until you mentioned heated seats, the option hadn't occurred to me. It would be nice in the land of many leaves, really anywhere on a cool clear day. I like it and will check it out Thats a perfect link Tobler, thankyou. 'Seat kits' are ~1500. Tomorrow I will see a Porsche experienced upholsterer who is indicating he will complete an as original recover for 14 -1500. I'd definately try the DIY if I end up doing the heated seats. Cheers
  3. Hi All Wondering if anyone out there has redone their car seats. I have 99 c2 cab with graphite grey partial leather seats. I believe the PO had a real dog sitting in the pax seat and it left the seat alittle tainted. Curious if there are any 'seat kits' out there. Porsche will sell them for more or less 2k for both seats. I'll check out recaro on monday. Thx Rick
  4. Hi Tom Sorry I can't help, my top problem occurred a couple of times and it has worked flawlessly for months. I plan to check the resevoir this winter as suggested. There are some good leads on this forum. Good luck Rick
  5. Yes I am sure Loren A careful look at the bracket reveals the cast aluminium left eye has failed and torn away. I am still wondering and will find out tomorrow when I order parts, what function is occurring behind this bracket. There is a hose on the right side of the bracket. I'm not sure if it is an oil breather or possibly for cooling fluid. Cheers Rick
  6. I wonder if someone will know off the top of their head the purpose BEHIND this alternator bracket. After a cursory look in the manual, I can't find it yet. I suspect an oil breather? But could be part of cooling system? Here is a pic with the alternator removed and a clear view of the failed bracket. Cheers
  7. Thank you Loren I resized and attached the pic of the shifted alternator after the bracket has failed. I am quite surprised that this bracket should fail although I can see the stress it suffers. It looks worse than it is. I have removed the alternator and tensioners to expose the failed bracket. That was a pleasure and only took about 15-or 20 mins. I will need to replace the bracket, oil fill tube, and serpentine belt, put it all back together change the oil and filter and she will be as good as new. I have the manual and I enjoy working on the car. Any recomendations on how to clean the windings and fan blades of the alternator, or is it best to leave as is. Would prefer to look at shiney copper. I'll post as I go in case anybody has to do this. Rick
  8. Hi Any advice on attaching a pic. Maybe the file size on the last attachment was to big with 7Meg. Thx Rick
  9. Hello all Had a surprise the other day when some smoke entered the cabin. I pulled over stoped and looked in the engine. The alternator bracket had failed causing the alt. to shift and in turn causing the destruction of the serpentine belt and oil fill tube. The smoke was caused from the shaffing rubber, no engine problem. Had the car towed home. I have removed the alternator and the two associated tensioners exposing the failed bracket. I will change out the bracket and the oil fill tubeI have included a pic and I hope it will attach. I'll send it now and see if the pic goes with the post, then add some further comments. Just one Q. for now, What would be the best way to clean the fan blades and winding of the alternator? 1999 996 cab Cheers Rick
  10. Thanks for the replies. Thanks for the reference Berny, I do plan on becoming a contributing member, this site is a wonderful resource. As for my top problem, top is down, I played around with the 'top up' switch without the park brake on and I got the cab top warning light flash 3 times then the muted 'clickclack' afew times. Then I selected park brake on and tried the 'top up' switch and the top functioned normal. It was as though I 'reset the system'. I suspect that I have an intermitant contact 'park brake to ground'. Before the top will begin a cycle there must be 1. ignition 2. park brake to ground 3. no speedo signal 4. engine lid closed I do have the manual, but one does need a pst2 and another electrical thingy for full top troubleshooting. Cheers Rick
  11. Hello All I wanted to resteart this thread as this top problem has resurfaced 5 months later. My '99 cab top is stowed, and with park brake on and light illuminated, selecting the 'top up' switch causes the instrument cluster cab top light to flash and I hear a muted 'click-clack' sound every 2 seconds from behind the clam shell door, but no top action. I've searched on the forum again and could'nt find anything similar. Anyone have any ideas? Thx. Rick
  12. flat6 Recently, on my 99 c2 cab, my airbag light came on also. I cleaned wire contacts under pax seat went to the dealer to check the fault memory code and clear the codes. In my case it was a fault memory 46 which is the driver Belt buckle. The fault has not reappeared now for about a month now, and if it does, I will DIY change the belt buckles before returning to the dealer. I understand the belt buckle fault is quite common on airbag issues.
  13. Thanks for the reply LVDell As a follow up on cab top function problem: problem appears intermitent. I was able to open and close the top today, full function complete to cab top warning light extinguish. Second cycle worked ok opening top, but on the closing cycle the roof latches but the windows would not close to complete the cycle and the warning light remains illuminated with the clickclack 3 flash cycle as above. All windows function, just cab top warning light remains illuminated. I am thinking microswitch and if anyone has any ideas that would be appreciated. I will follow up the thread with the eventual resolution. Thanks. PS this forum is a wonderful resourse. Rick
  14. Hello All I have a '99 C2 Cab and the top is not functioning properly. I have searched the forum for similar problems and so am aware of the possible handbrake microswitch. Here is my scenario: Handbrake on - 'Park' light illuminated on the instrument cluster. Press the cab top switch, (hear a muted 'clickclack' sound from the rear and then the cab top warning light on the instrument cluster flashes 3 times) and this repeats itself but no top action. Would this be the symptom of the handbrake microswitch or any guesses on other possible faults? I'm handy, have the manual and hope to render the fix myself - if possible. Thanks
  15. Hi I am a new owner of a '99 996 cab and I am tuning her up and going through her, just to get to know her! I am having difficulty changing the fuel filter. It is located in the central tunnel behind water cooling pipes 1/3 the way forward between the rear wheels and the forward wheels. With the car on rear jackstands, it is a tight fit and difficult to see the fuel filter until you are right below it. I have removed the ground and forward of filter 'snap on' fuel line. I am having difficulty removing the rearward fuel line to filter. It is a tight fit for my hand and I am not sure if I should twist ( because it is a compression fitting ) or I should pull. Any advise would be appreciated, Thanks.
