  1. I have just looked at the all of the connections and they are all clean and fitted tight. No corrosion at all. I am Not sure it is that, How could I test that further ? Thanks by the way for the help
  2. Thanks, I know it's not the DME relay. I forgot to mention I have replaced that. I will check the crankshaft sensor. But if it were that would it still make that "click" sound every time it happens from behind the dash ?
  3. Ok, here is a problem that has been plaguing my 911 for over a year now. I have had it at some very qualified mechanics and they have not been able to figure it out. It is a problem that comes and goes and of course I can't get it to happen in front of anyone who knows more about engines than me or even in front of a video camera for that matter. It can be a simple annoyance all the way to making the car undrivable. It seems to come and go at random. When I go to start the car I never know which car I will get. It is a Jekll & Hyde situation. First off the equipment. 84' Carrera stock 3.2 motor. Re-built when I got it. I have put 20k on it so far. Now the symptoms, The engine will lose power, the tach will start to come down then all of a sudden it will "catch" and go back up to normal. There will be an audable "clicking" sound from behind the dash. Like around the oil temp guage area. This is all during idling When driving it will lose power and then "catch" making the car jump like a "new to stick" driver is driving. It kind of violently jerks. Sometimes during these bad moments the car will stall and will not restart. None of this happens at speeds above 40 MPH I recently had the ignition switch replaced when we thought it was that, we also replaced the hazzad switch as well. It worked fine for 6 months then Blam ! It was back. There goes $600 When the car is having a good day, It runs perfectly. All speeds and is a joy to drive. I drove it today for an hour and it was fine, I ran it through a range of speeds and revs on the tach with no problems at all not even a blink. If I start it tomorrow I have no idea what I will get. I don't know if it is Electrical that seems to make the most sense. It occured to me that since it comes and goes and since I hear a click from behind the dash could it be two wires from one of the gauges touching each other ? Please any suggestions will help, I love this car and really want to drive her more. I am so sick of having this problem.
  4. Thanks Grüsse, I am sure it is the mechanical or (expensive) part of teh switch. I have already put in a new electric part of the switch and am still having the problems. I have found a really good price $472 (Ouch) for a new one. SO I am going to replace it. I was trying to find out how hard it is as I might try to do it myself and save some money, Or at least make sure this was NOT a moment when I should check my ego and just let professionals handle it. I am pretty handy around the car and like to learn by doing. I am curious about what you mean by "renewing" the unit ? I believe I have a short inside of the unit and that is causing my problems. I have seen these outside of teh car not sure how I could even get inside to fix a short. The key works and there is no underdash AC. Do you think you could elaborate a bit ? Thanks Michael
  5. whooppsss good point, It is a 1984 911 Carrera
  6. Hi, I need to swap out my Ignition switch. Has anyone on here done this ? Do I have to remove the steering wheel ? is there a book out there that describes the process in detail ? in a related topic since I will be getting new keys is it possible to get new cylinders for the door locks that match the new ignition key ? Any help would be appreciated Thanks
  7. Ok does anyone know WHICH RSD will fit my 84' carrera TARGA ? I get conflicting answers from everyone including some Porsche professionals. Here are the kinds of RSD's I have seen in my travels All of these have the two hatches in the bottom of them. 1) the 964 (?) version. This is the one with the "wings" 2) the 993 (?) version this one has the two bars on it towards the front. 3) the 993 (?) version with no bars slightly different shape. (was it just a 993 with no bars and some mods? Who knows) 4) The flat version, This kind has no bars and takes two actual glove boxes inside. (someone told me they were made by palamino and were on speedsters) I really want to put either # 2 or #3 on my 84' carrera TARGA I don't like the 4th version at all and I am pretty sure the 1st choice is too wide for my car. PLEASE help, Thank you very much. Michael
