  1. What was the original question in your topic? Sometimes, when the subject of the topic is fairly common, like oil change intervals, a search will bring up a wealth of info covered in past posts. Cheers. Sorry to harp on, but I concur. I was a member of a BMW forum, and there was a lot more people there willing to share technical info. I just don't see that level of technical knowhow here, but I am sure I am wrong. dadbeh I think that people here do their best. I was a complete noob a few years ago and I have learned a great deal here. Perhaps more BMW people work on their own cars. I know where I live very few Porsche owners would ever consider a DIY. Porsche owners look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them I do my own maintenance. It's not that people aren't willing to share their expertise. Perhaps it's because very few of us have expertise to share!! You are 100% correct about DIY. Looked under the 997-2 while they had it on the lift yesterday. The tech told me it takes approx. 1.5 hrs to drop the engine and about the same to put it back. He said "it's designed for that" I don't think they can do much to the engine without dropping it. The shop rate is $135.00/hr. It looks like for anything other than topping off the oil I'll be getting out the check book. Working on motorcycles is tinker toys compared with this. With my lack of skills, tools and facilities, self maintenace on this machine is not a sane option for me.
  2. Gentlemen and ladies: Please consider my apologies with all sincerity. It is clear my post did not come out like I wanted. I did not intend to offend or slam the site at all in any way!! Just wanted to point out that there isn't as much participation as I've seen on other sites. I belive there are many more 911's out there than BMW motorcycles. In fact this is the only site I've been able to find that provides what I'm looking for re 911's. Didn't mean to compare this site to another with negative criticism. I will continue to visit and contribute. Having said the above, phillipj, bmohr and goldenwarrior seem to have taken offense to the point of vitriolic response with unnecessary hyperbole. Chill guys.
  3. Helooooooooo....??!!! This forum has potential. But very little usage. I am a member of the BMW R 1200 GS website/forum. Those people know how to communicate!! I've gotten a ton of info through that site. Really good stuff on motorcycle maintenance and performance improvement. But.......this site is weak. I would think we porsche owners are just as passionate as the BMW motorcycle owners if not more. Anyway....... I changed the oil and filter today on my 997-2 CS. About $200.00 total. Pompano Beach, FL. A bit steep. ($135.00 hr. on service chargees for labor). Glad I did it. 3,700 miles. I'll change it again at the reccomended interval of 10,000 mi. And from then on every 5,000 miles. Went with 0 W 40 Mobil One. BTW there was an open service campaign on the exhaust system supports. The Service tech could not tell me if it was noise or loose-****ty mounts. Maybe it is noise due to ****ty mounts. I dunno..... They overfilled the oil as indicated on the oiil measurement function. At least it's clean. BIG NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!,,,,,, while waiting I spoke to two salespersons and they told me Porsche is offering a $10,000 cash back to dealerships and that they are discounting all their '09 911's an additional $10,000!!!! that's $20,000 off all of their '09 997-2's. that means you can get any '09 997-2 for $20,000 off of sticker for now!!!!! If any prospective buyer reads this,,,,,,,,,,NOW IS THE TIME TO GET OFF YOUR ***!!!!!!!! I confirmed this discount with a call to another local dealership. You all Keep it out of the trees!!!!!!! :o
  4. It's your nickel, but are you planning on changing tranny oil , after all they have to break in as well. Engine and tranny are two different beasts entirely. I'd do the engine (lots of moving parts with tight tolerances where metal shavings can scratch and score. I'd hold on the tranny (big heavey gears with much looser tolerances). dadbeh dadbeh, You are 100% correct re transmission v. engine oil change. About 20 X as many parts. Airplanes and boats are treated the same. Just about 4000 mi now and will change engine oil and filter tomorrow. Keep it out of the trees! :drive:
  5. Hello out-there! What are you getting for mileage on your 997-2's. I'm driving a coupe and indicating 18.8 MPG most of the time. I don't drive it very hard but I don't shift with the indicator either, (6 speed manual). I don't like the way the engine sounds at less than 1600 rpms. Only have 3600 miles on the odometer. The owner's manual states that oil and fuel consumption gets better as breakin proceeds. At what mileage are these cars considered broken in? Any opinions, comments or generalizations would be appreciated!!!!! Thanks!!!!!
  6. Long time ago a Ferrari sales person told me "People who drives these types of cars don't change tires them selves!" so for the $800+ you paid, you could have call a taxi cab, pay for the road side assistance and still keep your boot space! Hee..Hee... :P Try calling a cab between Sebring and Clewiston on Sunday morning and then tell me how much standing with your thumb in your ear you can get for $800.
  7. DRIVING A CAR WITHOUT A SPARE IN SOFLA IS SHEER STUPIDITY. BOUGHT THE CAR WITHOUT A SPARE BECAUSE I LOVED IT. BIT THE BITTER MICHELLIN BULLET TODAY AND BOUGHT THE SPARE. NOW IT TAKES UP 30% OF MY FFFing "TRUNK". BREAKDOWN: JACK................................list $268.oo.....paid.....$200.06 PANCAKE SPARE...............list $683.13.....paid.....$583.48 STUPID FOAM INSERT.......list $ 74.43.....paid.....$ 51.69 PRICE OF ENTIRE CATASTROPHE........................$885.35 (incl. tax) P.O.C.-----Josh Champion Porsche Pompano Beach, FL 800-940-4020 WTF!! :drive:
  8. Hello!! Got a new '09 911 S with 2,300 mi on the odometer. I want to do an oil and filter change after the first 3,500 mi. Just because it makes sense to me to get rid of circulating oil that has break-in debris floating around. Not trying to out-engineer Stutgart......but....plan to keep this car for a long while. Any reason not to?? BTW, wasting $125.00 to make me feel good is not a waste to me when it concerns this car. Thanks!
  9. Good morning! Just got back from vacation and need to reprogram my key, ('09 911S). I did hook it up to a batt trickle charger. I don't have access to the owner's manual right now. I'd appreciate some local knowledge. Thanks!
  10. Good morning!! What should be the expected life of a clutch on a '09 911S coupe be? Moderate usage and no tire squealing. Thanks!
  11. Hey whall! Those are naval avia..tor wings! What did you fly? CH-53's eat a lot of oil too.
  12. The manual states that at least during break in, it should consume about 1 qt per 1600 KM. (Mobil 1 0w40). I forget which manual states that but it was an official Porsche pub. I keep a case at home and a qt. in a zip lock baggie in the trunk.
