    997 C2S

    My two forward air intakes for the oil cooler radiators are full of s---t!*%#$@.

    These receses have managed to entrain all sorts of refuse, ie, leaves, trash, cig butts, bugs, etc., etc.,......

    It is a pia to get the junk out of there. I used a car wash vacuum and couldn't get it all after two dollars.

    Some of the detritus entered through the central (license plate area) void.

    There must be some after market screen that will permit air entry while blocking the trash.

    I've seen other model years with screens where our louvers are located.

    Anybody know of a product to eliminate the accumulation of crap there?

  2. Do not worry, I had to add oil at the rate of about 1qt. every 2000 mi or so for the first 8,000 mi. It has since settled down to about 1 qt. every 3,000 mi. With 0 w 40, which is about as thin as water, I'm not surprised or upset. Also with colder temps in winter it's logical consumption would be down. The only concern I have is what the valves look like, i.e. exhaust valves, in the 997-2 direct fuel injection manifolds.

    We will see.

  3. My first oil change performed by a dealer resulted in an overfill. I took it to a factory authorized private service shop and had some oil drained. I don't recall a check oil level warning but it sounds reasonable that you would get such a warning with a low or high oil level.

    If the car has over 10K miles and they did not reset the diagnostics, that could also trigger the fault indication.

  4. 2009 997 C2S. Flat right rear tire.

    Bought the tire ins when I got the car.

    Sooooo,,,,,,,I took it in when I noticed the drop in press.

    Went to work with 20 psi, worked all day and pumped it up with the included pump.

    The pump worked well. Got it up to 36 psi in about 7-8 min.

    Took it into the dealer and got a new $500 tire at no expense to me.

    Left happily after about 45 min incl a car wash.

    Then,,,,,,,

    I stopped to check things out after a couple of blocks.....you know, anal.

    Lo and Behold.........some SOB had jacked my original tire stem caps!! WTF???!!!

    Drove back to the dealer and asked for my caps. "Duhhh,,,,what caps??"

    "We don't know where they are."

    Well, they tried to make nice and offered me other caps. I told them I just wanted my original caps.

    Nobody knew "nothing", so I left. Couldn't prove anything. The acutal caps weren't the issue.

    Before leaving I looked the service mgr in the eye and told him they had a problem.

    How assinine and unprofessional, over a stupid set of valve stem caps.

    ...People are going to do what they want to do regardless, but there is no good reason not to follow the manufacturer's recommendations when it comes to engine and transmission oil levels.

    Couldn't agree more. Is it possible that nothing bad comes of it? Sure. Likely, even? Maybe. This makes it the subject of easy internet speculation. But is there anything bad that comes from NOT overfilling it? Nope. Err on the side of caution when you're talking maintenance. Sure you can save a few minutes and maybe a few bucks not having someone drain a little oil out.

    Hey, it's your Porsche...

    The level best advice I've seen is. "tell them to put only 7 qts in, I'll check it and fire for effect". :rolleyes:

  6. I've never seen anything. Why does your shifter have play? Of the 997's I have driven I thought the shifter was very good.

    The play is minimal. However, compared to a manual shift where the gearbox is located directly below the lever, the feel is positively loose. As an example, (dare I say it?), the BMW 3 and 5 series shift is as precise as it gets. And these are not gated like the Ferrari. I'm not crying in my beer, it's Porsche and it's different...... I'm just wondering if installing the solid rod shift linkages I've seen will void the warranty. If these parts are not OEM then the question is probably answered. Don't get me wrong, I'm getting better and better with the manual transmission with time.

  7. The DME is main control unit. If you change the throttle map - you are changing other things (spark advance, valve/cam timing, etc.) as they are all controlled by the DME program.

    I doubt Porsche would tell us specifically what it does - because then people would try yo copy it.

    You answered my question. Most of the info in the technical manual seems to address the PDK equipment and I have a manual transmission. It seems that many of the sports chrono effects apply to the PDK and that makes sense. And I understand why Porsche would not want to reveal detais of it's ECU programming. I just wondered if it was only throttle control. I will say that in Sports Chrono Plus my 997cS2 is another animal. That in addition to PASM really is another automobile altogether. This machine is phenomenal. BTW, is DME interchangeable with ECU?

    Thanks for your reply. I've read the service technik pub and really see no info re mapping other than throttle. I'm specifically looking to find if there is any change in either the ignition or valve/cam timing. I did read somewhere else that "mapping", which to me means more than just throttle opening, was implied to mean changes thrughout the power curve. And that would imply fuel, fire or valves to me. Am I wrong?

    Does sport chrono plus selected on the center console change ECU mapping. The literature I've seen so far states that the throttle opening directions are stepped up in relation to throttle foot pedal input...... but I was wondering if there is any change in the ignition or valve/cam timing?

    If there are any links or articles anyone is aware of that explains this feature in detail, I'd love to see it.

    And all this because they just HAD to get rid of the oil dipstick!

    Why couldn't they just engineer a dipstick???

    I could have sucked out oil from the sump through a dipstick pipe...

    The freaking oil sensor will last 4 years and one hour exactly.....

    Then, it will require dropping the engine to install a new sensor......

    I want a dipstick!!!!...

    How can you race a car engine without a dipstick?

    Can we reverse engineer an oil dipstick??

    Somebody needs to design a retrofit kit to install a dipstick!! :huh:

  11. Take it back and get the level corrected as you don't know how over full it is. Too much oil can damaged the catalytic converters.

    Took the car to an independent shop in Pompano Beach, FL. FOREIGN AFFAIRS, the owner's name is Bob Varela.

    They removed 1L of oil to bring the level to the correct quantity. They had the car on the lift twice since the only way to remove oil is via the drain plug. It is a trial and error procedure. They did not charge me for the service.

    The oil removal had to be done and Varela and his shop were a class act.

    Keep you 911's out of the trees!!

    Got the oil and filter change at the dealership last week. 997 SC2. The indicator reads overfill. Ran it for +/- 100 Mi thinking,,,,,,,"they couldn't overfill it that much, after all, it's the dealership, right???!!!"

    Welllll,,,,,,The indicator still reads overfill!*#%@!!!

    Soooooo,,,,,,,I got this syphon pump, see, and tried to run it down the oil fill tube......No joy....... It didn't reach the sump.

    Therefore, I still have overfill and don't know how much overfill.

    The manual clearly says, "Do NOT overfill".

    I've probably got huge bubbles of oil in the direcrt injection chambers, right?

    My valves are all going to get impregnated with burnt grunge, right?

    My spakplugs are probably fouled, right?

    If you can't trust the dealership, who can you trust?

    Would you find someone to drain some oil?

    Would you take it back to that dealership?

    If it were your $90K baby?

    Am I worrying too much over bull****?

    The exhaust doesn't look too bad.....

    I cant sleep!!!!!!

    997-2 CS

    Does anyone with a manual transmission have trouble engaging 1st gear from a stop??

    Sometimes it is dificult to get into first, even shifting to second or third before trying first again.

    Sometimes it delays getting off the line at a red light with the inevitable honker assclowns behind me.

    Sometimes I'll cycle the clutch several times and try again...and...no joy!

    I don't want to "force" it, I am told one should not "force" german things.

    When german things don't work as they are designed, suposedly there is something wrong....right??

    Plus, the linkage shift feels sloppy anywaaaayyyyy...I can live with that.

    But, dudes, that delay at the red light is frustrating sometimes, embarrasing, WWWTTTFFF!!!!!!!!!

    When some hottie sees you sitting there with your finger in your ear its not cool.

    ( I'm not really that upset, I will probably keep the car anyway.)

  14. You are 100% correct about DIY. Looked under the 997-2 while they had it on the lift yesterday. The tech told me it takes approx. 1.5 hrs to drop the engine and about the same to put it back. He said "it's designed for that" :huh: I don't think they can do much to the engine without dropping it. The shop rate is $135.00/hr. It looks like for anything other than topping off the oil I'll be getting out the check book. Working on motorcycles is tinker toys compared with this. With my lack of skills, tools and facilities, self maintenace on this machine is not a sane option for me.

    If your Porsche dealer tells you that you have to drop the engine to change the oil and filter, I think you've been sold a bill of goods my friend. See this post: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7055. The procedure for a 996 is pretty much the same as a 997.

    I'm just as leery of doing my own maintenance as you, so I had my independent mech, who used to work on my old M-B W123, do my last oil and filter change for $20! I supplied the 9 qts of 0W-40 Mobil 1 and the rest of the bits, including the filter and crush ring from Sunset Porsche. The whole thing set me back a grand total of $110. And seeing how easy oil and filter changes are, I might attempt the next one myself. Cheers!

    I actually find it easier to have my mechanic do my oil changes as well. I have a similar relationship (with my mechanic) as you do. Changing the oil is easy...It's disposing of the used oil that I find a bit of a problem.

    No 355, nobody said dropping the engine was required for an oil change.
