  1. Price seems kind of high for my taste, for the year. Have you checked with Porsche website used car search? You can also look at your local Porsche dealers used cars. I just did a quick search, for instance a 2003 coupe certified (read: Warranty from Porsche) listed at $49K. Porsche dealers have more overhead to feed so their prices can be higher, but it gives you a comparison for other shops. My last car I bought from a dealer 1500 miles away, sometimes negotiation with dealers can pay off and the warranty is sweet since it is by Porsche. Just my opinion.
  2. You probably have a torx bolt in there, like in my car. Try a 5/6 hex socket, should fine. Be careful with the lower left bolt. You need a 10 mm socket to remove the nut that is attached below and the small black bracket can fall off when you. It will make sense when you get into it.
  3. I rented a KIA recently that had the Econ button. It was a blast to drive.......down hill..........with a tail wind.......
  4. I have purchased 3 cars on ebay, 2 996 Porsches and a BMW 740. It does require more guts than brains at first, but with some homework you can do okay. After my experiences, I would only buy from a dealer, preferably a dealer of the same car manufacturer. My last 996 got from Ira Porsche outside of Boston. The car did not sell on ebay, so I contact the dealer sales manager directly and we negotiated a prices for a Certified car. That way I felt better about managing the risk of buying at a distance, without seeing the car first. Every instance was great, regardless. Take your time and if you see issues with a seller on feedback, steer clear.
  5. Using my infrared temp gizmo, the track temp was 134 (black top). Anyway after a mid-afternoon run, I always look at my tire temps and pressure, as well as breaks and rotors and other parts. Took a read (shooting) around the air intake scoops and it was in the high 160s. The laser might have gone deeper than the front section
  6. Good deal. While you are at it, ask for other functions they can program, like automatic locking of doors after the car is moving, etc. Dealer would have a list of any other available customer preferences you can change or customize.
  7. I had the same problem until I got a cup holder for my beer. Problem resolved, no more reaching for the cooler in the back seat, getting it open, etc. Seriously, over time you will see uneven wear on the tires. But if you had alignement done recently, more likely than not is that it was either not done correctly, not done at all, or someone forgot the torque the hardware. I found that a tire place alignment can save money, but then you have to take it back to a specialist to get it right. So I just go to my local dealer and they always get it right.
  8. Cosmo, Wondering if some "discreet" placement of small black zip-ties would help secure it, the small ones that would be invisible or hard to see? I know that area can get over 170F from some track day measurements.....
  9. Kim, when you lock and unlock the car with the remote, do the dome lights turn on with the remote unlock?
  10. Try this that works for me in sometimes muggy Charlotte. 1. Turn car on and AC on and press Auto 2. Press teh forward vent button and the footwell button on the AC pannel 3. Turn car off 4. Turn car on and the selections you made should be still working Now the flow to the windshield vent should be off and no more fogging until you change the setting or press auto. If you are on Auto and press the front vent and footwell, and do not turn the ignition off, I have noticed that the vent will still leak air and you will have foggy windshield.

  12. Do you have a CD changer in the trunk? If you do, the CD's go label down, not up like most other systems I had. I had trouble with that too when I first got the car.
  13. Statman, don't assume any arguments here, we want friendly opinions on experience so we can learn from each other's history. I have not seen Zaino in the store, where you get it? Have used Zymol, but it leaves a blue residue on cracks. Glad to get your input. Besides, IMO anyone with enough time to get into an argument over car wax products should put down the keyboard, grab his or her keys, and go for a fun fast drive. Scott, you have a link to the Rennlist to save me the hunt and peck time?.... Glad you stopped looking up at CMP, that "looks upon the sky and makes rain" line can be dangerous on track days.
  14. I think NXT is great, very similar to Eagle 1. The advantage on Eagle 1 is that it dries clear and no white lines/residue. If you are sloppy, like me, want to keep the cleaning to minimum, I prefer Eagle 1. But I do have both. NXT also has a great tire gloss spray, I use it when I primp the tires. I will try "Nu Finish", have seen it before at the shop, thanks for the tip. I am painfuly aware of the afternoon heavy storms in FL, I used to work for the flood control district...... deciding when to open the gates was never easy.
  15. Congratulations, and welcome to the site. I know other members are interested in doing the same thing you are, so please keep track of what you do, costs, pictures. We would be looking to follow your conversion. I love that color, I had a 99 Ocen Blue cabrio, turned a lot of heads (including the police heads).
  16. I used this morning the new (on sale) Turtle Wax Ice liquid "wax", that dries clear. Just simply wanted to test it and compare to my usual suspects; Rejex, Eagle 1, NXT. The good news is that Ice does apply like water. The bad news is that it comes off like water. There is no difference on the car before and after, and I would not recommend at all. I would stay with the Eagle 1 that dries clear for a quick wax job, or Rejex if you are going nowhere for 8 hours and can wait for the polymer curing. All easy to apply, but Rejex had the longer "staying power" of them all. The Ice soap, however, is pretty good and I have been using it for a few months.
  17. So perhaps the term "royally screwed" originated there? Anyway, I would not recommend warranties-4-wheels if you encounter them. Even if you do a search with the "BBB OnLine", which gives you an idea of complaints and issues, there is no guarantee they will honor what they sold. I went for the certified Porsche warranty, for my second 911. Peace of mind for 3 years.
  18. You should have the ABS codes read with Porsche System Tester, I do not think that has anything to do with the MAF. The MAF may or may not show as a CEL. Road ruts and tire pressures can all have impact, but the ABS light should not be on for an lean/rich mixture problem. Just want you to be safe in case you have an impending brake failure here.
  19. Skipp, The answer is to learn to drive responsibly within the limits of the law, like I do (yessim, miss Daisy..) Just kidding, but I do have the V1 with the latest software upgrades, mounted on the passenger side visor with the remote display under the dash. It has saved me so many times, specially around Lancaster (4 speed traps this past Saturday morning), Candem, and Kershaw where the "boss hogg" hides to get Porsches going 5 over the limit and heading to CMP.... It picks up any laser or radar far away, enough for me to slow down and let some poor soul pass me to get the ticket (I always warn them, but...). So very happy with the V1 in my case. The few people I know have an emitter/blocker where less than satisfied.
  20. Scott, got me wondering about this problem. When I got home and swaped my tires, the wear was pretty even. I do not know what is the alignment on mine, but will see next time I am at Hendricks if they give me a read. Would be a good comparison since we drove the same track. I ran 26F 32R cold, and they got to 35F 42R right after tracktime. Izzy
  21. I am not so sure, having driven them both back to back as I owned 2 cars with each tranny. The 6 speed felt not only faster, but a lot easier to manage around corners on tracks. With the tip, you have instant torque and can spinout if you power through a hairpin (ask me how I know, I got the grass stains to prove it), but with the 6 speed, you have another pedal to help rotate the car around and can come out faster (not sure of C4s, though). Also, the gearing is different between the two, which may be part of the "quicker"acceleration for 6 speed. The new 997 TT is faster 0-60 on the Tip. But I don't think it is the same for the 996's. You also went from a 3.4 to 3.6, and S to boot, which gives you the HP gains. I am a big fan of both, and loved how you can change gears while keeping your hands on the wheel all the time. You will have a blast no matter what.

  23. They run (new) pretty close between $750 to $1000, Schnell, GHL, Fabspeed. They even look pretty close, similar size and weight. The difference will be in sound, and perhaps quality of build. Best solution is see if any members with different types live near you and listen to the sounds to decide. You can find pre-enjoyed Fabspeeds or GHL on Ebay, and Schnell suppliers like Vertex sell directly from their site or Ebay as well.
