  1. All of a sudden the driver side window does not slide down when the door is opened nor close when the dood is closed. Coincidentally, when it first happened the alarm went off. I'm guessing this is not something new. Can anyone help me on this.
  2. MY 03 top has a very slight squeak when I hit a bump while the top is down. Doesn't do it when the top is up so I know it is some part of the mechanism contacting and rubbing somewhere. I know that this may be stupid to ask but I was hoping it may have happened to someone here and that it is a common problem. Am I in luck?
  3. I have an Actron CP9135 AutoScanner with OBDII capability. Can I reset my air bag warning light with this device? Is it basically the same device as those mentioned above? I replaced my original steering wheel last week with a nicer one and the light came on when I restarted the car.
  4. Thanks for the offer Topless. All pof this has persuaded me to stay with what I have.
  5. My S only has 29K+ miles on it so changing struts won't make any difference, I would think.
  6. Those are very good points! Got you by quite a few years though. Back in the early 80's I put firmer springs and shocks on a 530i and the ride improved, just as you say. I had actually given some thought to that for this situation. That's why we come to this board for ideas and suggestions. We also have a Volvo V70 and occasionally I feel the same bang in the suspension. For some reason it usually happens after 20K+ miles are on the tires and new ones seem to soften the bang. Since the car has 153K miles on it I have gone through that experience a few times. Thanks for the words. I will keep them in the safe as I progress.
  7. Thank you for that answer. I guess I need to test drive a regular Boxster to see if there is enough difference to merit a change.
  8. I have stock size 17" wheels. The basic question remains. Do the two models have different suspensions or suspension settings, spring rates, or shock rates?
  9. Thank you Alan for your reply. I have tried similar shift patterns to reduce shifting. As I said in the edit above, the charts in the User Manual eliminated the 5 speed option. I would not modify the suspension to soften the ride. My original thought was selling and buying down.
  10. I have a 03 Boxster S which is a great car. However, I'm very old and might like to soften the ride a little. Would I accomplish this by moving to a non-S Boxster? I don't hot rod or autocross so at the limit handling is not so important. Also, would the 5 speed give me a little taller last gear so as to slightly lower the revs at 70 mph? I find the 6 speed requires a little too much shifting in normal driving conditions. And, please do not recommend switching to an automatic. Edit: I found the gear ration in the owners manual. The S sixth gear gives a lower RPM at 70 mph.Could not find anything about the suspension differences in the manual.
  11. The bad engine mounts used to be blamed back in the day as the source of the rough idle problem. It may have contributed but I recall having the ignition or fuel injection settings tweaked by a friend who was an authorized dealer mechanic to the point that the idle smoothed out considerably. However, this out of spec and illegal tuning eventually caused what seemed like uneven running. I had him reset it to spec and lived with the idle problem. Since that time(the late 80's) much has been done with after market chips that are designed to do different things to the performance of the engine. I was hoping that there was one to smooth out the rough idle. If it really is an engine mount problem did Porsche ever issue a newly designed mount for the 944/968? Jack
  12. I once owned an 87 944 that was one of my favorite cars among close to fifty I have had. However, one of the things that disappointed me was a very rough idle that was normal with the 944 and then the 968 idle. I'm thinking of buying another one if time has fixed the problem through some type of engineering fix from the after market. I'm thinking of a chip change that may have been developed to fix the problem. Is there such a thing? If so, I'm going to start the hunt. Jack
  13. Thanks for the reply. I had the alignment done with two new rears. I had a similar discussion with the Service Manager who was very knowledgeable. They showed me the computer "before" printout that had the wheels in spec in green and the wheels out of spec in red. My readings were one wheel completely out of spec and one very close to out of spec. He said this was why the tires wore down on the inside. But when discussing whether the in spec settings would prevent inside tire wear he was evasive. He kept saying that if you wanted Porsche handling you had to be in spec. He didn't like my idea of setting the camber to 0 as then I wouldn't get true Porsche handling. Somehow I expect that I will eventually see inside tire wear even though I don't drive the car hard. Jack
  14. I am putting two new rear tires on my 2003 S after the current set expired from excessive wear on the inside of each tire. I expect this is caused by excessive camber but I don't actually know. I have heard that Porsches often have this excessive wear pattern because of the design of the suspension. I'm an old guy and do not drive the car aggressively or autocross it. Is this a fact and should I expect this kind of poor wear in the future? Or is my car so much out of alignment that this is the problem? If it is a design issue can you set the alignment .5 to 1 setting over the factory recommend setting in order to solve the problem? I think the tires were relatively new as they were on the car when I bought it and were the second set. The car only had 21,900 miles at that time. I've only put 4,500 miles on it and they are pretty shot. Any advice is welcome. I am having the work done Wednesday, 8/04. Jack
  15. I just received a call from the Service Advisor. They have isolated the problem to a shutoff valve located at the inlet to the charcoal cannister. However, he believes that it is not covered by Emmissions Control Warrenty. This seems incorrect to me as this is part of the ECS. Can anyone speak to this? Jack
  16. I ended up taking the car to Walters Porsche in Riverside, the original selling dealer where I had had a PPI done before I bought the car. I sense that I am in big trouble as they seem to be puzzled in finding the problem. The code fault is PO455. They have already worked on it for at least three hours and all they have been able to say is that there is evidence of mouse habitation around the gas tank and that the mice may have eaten part of a wire that carries some type of sensor signal. I am half panicked that I could be the victim of inexperience, lack of knowledge, etc. in debugging this problem, as the bill continues to rise. Can anyone advise me on what I should do before this goes any further? Jack
  17. Thanks pvaughn. I am going back to the smog station this morning. A car guy friend at coffee this morning thought that the smog check machine they use had the ability to perform this check. I talked to the shop owner last night and he was more than willing to try to figure out the problem and make it right in case something was set amiss by the smog check. I'll post my results tonight. Jack
  18. I live close to San Diego. When I go back to the smog station will their machine be able to locate the leak if that is the problem? Also, do you know if this problem is covered by warranty. I seem to remember that any problem with the pollution control system has an extended warranty period. Jack
  19. I bought a 2003 Boxster S last week. It's like new as it only has 23, 300 miles on it. What a great car! Drove it a couple of times then took it to be smogged and then registered last Thursday. Tonight I drove it to dinner and then a movie. Starting it up after dinner the engine check light did not go off. Read the manual and it points to an emmision control or gas cap problem. Two factors may be causing this: 1. After dinner when unlocking the car I heard a little click coming from the gas cap area. I was wondering how vandals were kept out of this area and I found out when I opened the lid. There's a little locking pin that locks the lid along with the door. I pressed this pin just out of curiosity to see how it worked. I doubt this has anything to do with the problem but I thought I would mention it. 2. While I was waiting during the smog test I noticed from afar that the mechanic seemed to be struggling with the whole process as he kept refering to the owners manual and it was taking a lot longer than expected. I went out to the car and he explained that he had done Boxsters before but they were often different in the process. I'm wondering if he could have messed anything up doing the smog or when putting the covers back on. Also, I noticed that the gas cap is put through a pressure check that looked pretty severe. Could that be a problem? I plan to take the car back to the smog station in a few days. They do a lot of smog checks so perhaps they might be able to ascertain the problem. I noticed an electronic connection between their electronics and under the dash of the Boxster. Would reconnecting that be able to trace the issue? Any help would be appreciated. Jack
