  1. AKA30 We purchased a 79 930 last september, and with some help from the forum put together a spares kit, flew to Ann Arbor and drove 2000 miles home. I did not complete a PPI, and the car did fine with the exception of a fault on the fuel pumps at the fuse panel. I have put about 4K miles on the car, it has a few tolerable oil lekas and now has 82K miles on it. I was interested in upgrading the exhaust from the current mild aftermarket system and upgrading the turbo, but I am concerned with the longevity of the engine with this many miles and boosting hp. We love the car and will continue to use it for club runs but won't be doing any DE events with it.. .just don't want to break it. I will pick up a 911 which I can dedicate to a play race car.... and keep the old 930 in the garage for special events. You see little regarding the old 930's in the forum, but the folks in the forum are great. Try the Pelican forum and any other speed related Porsche specialty houses like Fabspeed. Good souces for information. Congratulations on your car, and have fun with it... John
  2. Hey Mike: No they are not. The center piece is held on by one 8mm allen bolt, which covers the 5 hole pattern. They appear to be three piece wheels but I don't know the manufacture. Thanks for the complement,,,it has been a great time with the car. Some people don't like the boxed rockers, but they keep lots of road hash off the side of the car and the rear fenders. John
  3. Final update: I had Wrights replace the breather gasket, thermostat O ring and replaced the copper seal rings and oil prfessure gauge sender which resolved a significant portion of the leaking,,, Joes shop is in Arvada and he is a porsche enthusiast which I highly recommend. Made it home just fine to Idaho, I recently was able to change oil and clean the bottom of the car off. The engine mounted oil cooler does not appear to be leaking, but the base of cylinders 4,5, and 6 are leaking a small amount. Valve covers seem to be tight and dry. The car has 80K miles on it now, and needs some "freshening". I will drive it through the summer and then pull the engine/trans and start the project this fall.
  4. Hi Folks: I purchased a 930 last fall, and have been cleaning and servicing it over the winter. She has a few leaks here and there, otherwise a pretty unmolested example (except for the mega stereo in the boot-which will be removed very soon). The car has possibly been lowered and it has bilsteins all the way around. I was planning on a few autocross events and a few DE events this year and was looking at the strut braces available from the various manufacturers. Some attach superficially to the strut tower hardware, and some attach to the top of the front strut control rods and then tie back down to the brake master cylinder mounting plate (Pwr Assisted brakes-depending upon single or triangle braced solutions), Any suggestions out there for the best way to proceed? Being a beginning driver would I notice the difference or should I just invest in my own training for now Also, anyone need a custom stereo that fits into the trunk of your 911? Thanks, John
  5. Update: The shop is replacing the breather gasket, oil thermostat O-ring, and resealing the fitting below the turbo oil supply line and idiot light/oil pressure gauge sender to resolve the oil leaking problem on the top of the engine. I will provide an update with pics later tonight if possible. Thanks to the forum members for recommendations John
  6. Hi Magcuda: Thanks for the pointer,,,I don't have all my tools, so trying to get to the top rear of the motor is somewhat "difficult". I just ran it again,, no leaking even when hot at idle (oil temp 185), so took it down the road and three miles or so it started leaking again,,,maybe a few ounces on the heater box. I am uncertain now it is originating from the oil cooler. I drove it back and kept my eye on oil temp and oil tank level,, also oil pressure. Seemed to me the oil pressure is reduced somewhat and temp running 210. Oil pressure at idle just above 1 bar, at 2400 about 3 bar. I drove the car out from Michigan in a steady rain storm and oil temp never got above about 185 degrees : it is hotter here in Denver, about 85F and sunny today I would guess. Front Oil cooler lines are hot, oil is circulating through the oil thermostat to the front cooler. I drove the 5 miles back via the interestate and check the car: no smoke no oil leaking,,, This is strange.. I will try to get it to the shop tomorrow: I would much rather have it on my two post lift at home with all my tools. Thanks for the reply John
  7. I did it,,,I purchased a 930 in Michigan and am driving it back west currently in Denver. It has been leaking a small amout of oil-driven 1200 miles and car has used about 1/2 quart. The small leak appeared to bet much higher in volume yesterday: dripping out on the right heater box,,,maybe a 1/2 cup in short order-shut it down quickly once it started "smoking" No loss of oil pressure, oil tank now about 1 quart down. Engine oil up to normal temp. Actions: I jacked the car and removed right rear wheel to inspect where oil leak has originated. Appears to be from the oil cooler proper, not any supply or return lines. The oil cooler attach point to case on motor appears reasonably dry,,,just an oil film build up. Tightened up the two lines (small and large lines hose clamps) to snug. Started the car on the jack stands and inspected under pressure. allowed car to warm up ~ 20 minutes no leaks,,, revved car,,, a few drips, nothing of volume as observed previously I have an appointment in Denver with a local shop recommended by PCA members from Rocky Mountain chapter. Checked on oil cooler price BEHR 91.107.041.00 $1,295.00 Ouch. stranded in Denver Any thoughts,,,, have any of you on the forum ever observed an oil cooler failure? Could it be something else. The car has run very well the entire trip up until now. Thanks, John :(
  8. Hi Boxter: Thanks for the pointers and I should probably join PCA since this could be a real opportunity for help should I ever need it. yes, AAA is good for about 100 miles, and that is it. Thanks, John
  9. Hi Chuck: Thanks for the recommendations. Oil consumption has been one quart in 2K miles,,, Tires look to be in good shape I have not had a PPI completed and am uncertain what that exactly means. I assume it is an End to End check of systems functionality and inspection. I will ask the seller if his mechanic can complete a leakdown test for me: this will provide me with a baseline for current engine condition. I will also look for the various relays and fuses and create an emergency kit as you suggest: I don't have an extra $5K around for the small stuff (Gees), and if something requires repair or replacement I will have to wait until additional funding is available. I had another question regarding updates that should be completed to this vintage 930: Will it require cam chain tensioner upgrades? I understand the 78 and 79s had improved suspension and brakes from the RSR learnings on the track (as compared to the 76 and 77 model years) Also, the cooling fan was redesigned with an increase in the number of cooling fan blades. This car has updated rotors which are slotted and cross drilled. It has also had an updated SS exhaust system installed, but the rest of the car is box stock (I am told) The seller states (rust free) Thanks for any other suggestions: John
  10. I am in the process of purchasing a 1979 930 What I have been told: US car All steel body 77K miles "unmolested" never tracked/raced oil consumption: 1 quart in 2000 miles "original and in NEAR PERFECT in every way" previous owners are old guys like me :) I will be flying to the midWest to pickup and drive back home to Idaho in two weeks time. As I prepare for the trip, what tips-n-tricks can you provide for a first time 930 Porsche owner to be aware of on a 2000 mile return trip home? Yeah I will take my AAA card sure,, but what specifically about this model should I pay particular attention to? Thanks for the help on my first Post to RennTech.org John
