Thanks for the links to the videos. To gain access to the starter in the 996 it is necessary to remove the intake distributor hose and possibly other parts. I wouldn't crank the engine to do the dynamic voltage drop testing with those components removed , unless ignition, fuel pump, etc. are disabled. Any suggestions about how to do that?
Thanks

My car starts as the battery was low, when the engine is hot. When the engine is cold, the car starts normally.
I read that this could be caused by a faulty alternator/starter cable. Is there a way of testing or at least inspecting this cable without removing it from the car?
Thanks

Today I had a rear tire flat and the tire cannot be fixed.
The tire catalog says that the tread depth can differ no more than 2/32 from tire to tire otherwise transmission damage can result. I have not yet measured the other rear tire tread, but after 17,000 miles, I expect the wear to be more than 2/32.
Will changing one tire only result for sure in damage to the differential? Is 2/32 the maximum wear difference recommended by Porsche?
Thanks

I will. Thanks again, Loren.

With reference to my post earlier today and the reply of Loren, the problem seems to be with the lever in the cabin rather than with the locking system in the trunk. The lever does not operate properly even with the trunk open. Any hekp is appreciated.
Thanks

The release cable has become hard to pull and the lever, after opening the trunk, does not go back down to its normal position, but it has to be pushed down manually. What could be causing the problem and how it can be fixed?
Thanks

Ahsai, logray, JFP,
Many thanks for your advise. We will do a careful inspection of the hoses and replace only on an 'as needed' basis

My 2000 996 has 93,000 miles and I am going to have the water pump and the thermostat replaced soon. I plan on keeping the car a few more years and I am wondering if I should get the cooling system hoses replaced as well. I have the following questions:
Any chance that the existing hoses will last another, say, 10 years?
Does replacing all the hoses require removing the engine from the car and/or diassembling engine components?
Should I replace only the hoses that are most likely to fail and which are these hoses?
Thanks

There are several possible sources of small plastic bits, including sealant, cam tensioner paddle wear pads, seals, etc. The most common are the wear pads (black or brownish) and sealant (brown or green). There is no way to confirm the seal condition of the IMS without pulling the trans, clutch, and flywheel out and then pulling the IMS cover after locking the engine down; and at that point you may as well just replace it with the LN unit.
I would not be overly concerned about the few bits you have, this is a fairly common find during an oil change.
Thanks. This is good news. I plan on replacing the IMS bearing, but I would like to do it when I get the clutch replaced.

After an oil change I inspected the oil filter and found a few black fragments apparently made of plastic in it. I collected most of them on the glove that can be seen in the attached picture. This is the first time that I see these fragments in an oil flter. There was no metal in the filter. Is it possible that the fragments come from the seal of the IMS bearing that has started deteriorating? If so, how could this be confirmed without removing the bearing from the engine?
Thanks

I managed to re-install the part. Problem solved.

I installed an iphone cable in my car and I ended up removing the part shown in the attached picture (it goes under the passenger side airbag above the foot well). Could somebody let me know how I can put it back? Is there a sequence to be followed, like one side needs to go in first? Should I remove also the trim part that is on the left side of the footwell and install the part in the picture first?
Many thanks

Here is a link to Becker America that has what you are looking for. You will have to give up the remote cd changer though .

Thanks, right what I needed!

I would like to connect my iphone to the car radio. Where I can buy the necessary cable? I understand that the cable connects to the back of the radio. Where does it come out of the panel? Is it long enough to keep the iphone on the passenger seat? Also, where I can find a manual of the radio?
Thanks

Thanks a lot. This was great information!

It is blacked out. Using a flashlight I was able to see the oil level and read the time. Many thanks for troubleshooting the problem!
How difficult is to replace that bulb?

The oil level indicator/clock in my car have stopped working ( no readings at all). When I bought the car, the readings were garbled and they became normal one day that I disconnected and then reconnected the battery. But the oil level indicator/clock failed completely a few day ago and disconnecting/re-connecting the battery did not help this time.
Any suggestion about what could be wrong and how to fix it?
Thanks

The engine light came on with the following codes: P0138/P0102
The car has just come out of the body shop where the bumper was removed and repainted and both front fenders were repainted (in place). This has probably no relationship with the codes, but I just want to mention it anyway.
The codes were turned off and the engine light has not come back on so far (I have driven the car 40 miles).
What could be the cause of the codes?
Thanks

Sorry, Loren, I had missed your reply to my previous post. Using your diagram I was able to remove the plastic cover on the passenger side. The problem is that the part that I bought is not just the cover, but the cover plus another part that is attached to it (in your diagram the assembly is #8). Now I need to remove this other part from the cover (any ideas about how to do this?) and install the cover. To answer the question of Logray my car is a 2000 6 speed coupe 996.
Thanks

Dave,
I have not done the test yet. I'll get to it as soon as I can.
