  1. I went to start my 99 996 C2 this morning and it now has a constant rattle.

It rattles a little on idle but when I apply the gas it rattles even more.

Could this be my cats going bad..never had them replaced and I have 59k miles on her.

I made a mp3 recording of the engine on idle and with gas

    996 engine mp3

    Thanks

    Brian

Yup - sounds like cats. But as everyone has said, with engine off hit the cats with a mallet.

If they make a sound it's for sure.

  2. Eric

When I installed my Pioneer double din unit, I placed the mike right on the steering wheel column.

What that does is that even with the top down, I can actually make myself heard - it's not a perfect sound for the other caller, but good enough in an emergency....never have to take my eyes off the road...

The mike I use has a noise cancelling capability where most of the background noise is filtered out:

Clarion RCB199 External Noice Cancellation Microphone

  3. I used the TSB to solve a very frustrating noise on my convertible top.

I bought a durametric and learned how to solve my airbag light problems through here.

I found out about vacuum leaks etc and solved them thanks to this forum.

I tackled the installation of an aftermarket Pioneer AVIC unit thanks to this forum.

I think this is the best technical forum on the Internet for automobiles.

  4. I know its been discussed here before, And I could not be leave people said they liked the buttons ???.

    There Awful.

The idea of steering wheel shift is speed & not having to move your hands off the wheel.

If you hold the wheel at 10 to 2 the buttons are below your wrists and nowhere near your thumbs.

I don't understand what sort of person designs a sports wheel on a sports car so bad.

Must have been the same idiot that built the bearings and plastic parts on our cars.

If you really want to race with a 996 on a track - get a manual.

    Tiptronic is a convenience.

    PDK is convenience plus race.

    PS: It's "Believe" and "They're"

  6. Surly this would be a simple mod for Tips that already have the horrible wheel buttons?.

Would we not just need to add paddles with switches to the rear of the wheel - & + .

And then Connect them in parallel to the existing buttons?.

Even with can bus I'm sure this would work, I have seen it done with many other makes of car I think the problem is not many people pull there Porsche apart.

No - many many people are very comfortable putting their Porsche's apart.

If you believe you can make a clean, well functioning paddle shifter kit that can be retrofitted to existing steering wheel - I highly recommend you create and market one - I'm sure many people will buy it.

  7. Thanks. I checked them out. Seems they offer a steering wheel with buttons.

I should have been more specific:

Does any after market company offer a means of replacing the Tip buttons with under wheel paddles?

    Thanks.

No - I did understand you. They offer it with paddle shifters.

contact them. It's around $1500 or so

  8. Just bough my first 911 this summer, a '02 Carrera 4S coupe with tiptronic (US). It's a great car, I felt I did a great deal on it (private), and since june I've driven it almost 5000km. So, late august I needed the EU control of the car. The car was spotless, but the tester told me that he felt the engine had a strange sound that he wanted me to check out. I bit worried, I headed out to the most renowned Porsche specialist in Norway, and yes. Conclusion from them, just by listening to the enigine was; replace it!

Driving back home, I started thinking how this could happen? The car has run 53.000km (verified) and just had a Porsche Approved pre-owned check - that I though was an indication that this was a spotless ride. It's never been above the redmark, and although I like to kick-down, it's never been driven hard, and never been above 165 km/h. And, I personally can't hear this sound. Had it been there when I bought it?

I won't conclude on this yet, as my car is beeing placed at Porsche Norway next week for a thourough check, but, as this an "old" car, privately bought, and with a "no value" Porsche test (111), it looks like I'm facing a bill of between 19k Euro (997 replacement engine) and 23k Euro (original 996 engine - 320hp).

IF this is the conclusion, I'm not sure what to do? Spending this much money on a new engine that's going to cost me 1/4 of the cars total value, well, it doesn't seem to be a good investment. What can a "newbee" do in a situation like this? Just lay down and die...?

Ask your Porsche specialist what is the cause of the engine failure.

Depending on the cause, a rebuild may or may not be possible.

    Also i didn't know if a 997 engine could be put into a 996?

  9. Hello:

I have the same codes with my 2002 996C2. Weird thing with my car is that the pump sometimes runs for a short period when I stop at stoplight, coming off freeway or after a steady 3 or 4 mile drive. I live in AZ, so don't think it's because engine is still cold. I've reset the CEL and observed that the CEL comes back on when I stop at stoplight. Usually not the 1st stop light, but a light 5 miles down the road. Since it's intemittent, and at wrong time, I suspect valves or vacuum leak.

Is there a diagram available for my car?

    Thanks,

    Dan

Hello all, I hve exactly the same problem. What did you find out was the problem?

  10. Hi all,

Had a bit of bother with my convertible roof the other day where the tension cable that runs along the side of the roof has brocken, through corrosion by the looks of it. I have found the cable from the following site

    http://www.design911...--997/prod8790/

The question i have is how easy are these to replace yourself, i dont want to start the job then discover that it is bigger than what i had imagined! has anyone had to carry this out if so what tools etc do you require and how long does it take to do??

    Many thanks in advance

    JC

yes this is the right cable.

    I fixed it here http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/996-forum/574384-convertible-top-not-folding-closed-quite-right-pics-solved-2.html

  11. Hi,

Just noticed today closing the top there's a gap as pictured below.

    Any ideas?

I tried pulling it as i closed along that edge, didn't quite work...

It looks like the cable (inside the vinyl sheath) may be stretched or has become "unanchored" from where it is screwed in under the rear of the top frame (base of the B-Pillar on a Boxster).

Not sure if this will be helpful, but take a look at this DIY for a similar problem with Boxsters, your 911 may have similar mechanisms at play: http://sites.google....fallintoguidech

If it does help with your 911 top, let me know and I can add a few words to the DIY for 911 owners.

    Regards, Maurice.

Maurice this is fantastic. I will have a look later today
